Goodbye, Irene!

Well, that wasn't as bad as we feared. The cellar took some water, but it always does that in a heavy rain. The big old sugar maple lost a couple of smallish branches, and it looks like there are a couple of trees down in the woods behind the house.

But we didn't lose power, which makes us a lot luckier than about a million people hereabouts. And that means that the female peep gets to work from home today. Not that she had much choice. No buses or trains are running, so she would have had a hard time getting to work.

I intend to do my best to interfere with her work, walking on the keyboard and demanding to be fed every 15 minutes.

Still suffering from upgrade hangover

We're still having a hard time keeping up with our friends. Our group mail is being directed to our e-mail now, but it isn't filtered into our Catster folder, and we can't reply directly from our e-mail account.

Hope it gets fixed soon. Mom wonders if it isn't related to her updated Firefox 6.0 browser, which she wishes she hadn't installed.

Anyway, friends, we hope you're all well and that we'll soon be able to hear about all your adventures and misadventures.

Fiesty tag! Jasper gets an 11

Yay! Our diaries work again. That's good, because I've been eager to play Charlie's Feisty tag game.

1. Do you make demands of your human? (If you answered Yes, give yourself 1 point.)
Absolutely! And loudly, and often.
1 point

2. If you make demands by doing any of the following, give yourself 1 point for each:
Persistent meowing 1
1 point for me!
Biting 1
Another point for me!
Smacky Paws 1
With both paws! 1 point
Relentless staring 1
Yep! 1 point
Inappropriate behaviors (i.e., chewing on furniture, electrical cords, the oven)
Sweeping items off the table! Slashing the newspaper! Just one point for all that?

3. If you make demands by doing any of the following, subtract 1 point:
Headbonking 0
Uh-oh. I do love to headbonk. Minus one.

Rubbing and purring on your human
Huh? If it gets results, why not? OK, another point gone.

4. If you let your humans rub your belly, subtract 2 points.
I do like to entice them by rolling over and looking adorable. But belly rubs are followed by bunny kicks and bites, so I'm not subtracting any points for that.

5. If you let anyone kiss your belly, subtract 5 points.
Gross!

6. Are you Head of your Household (HOH)? (1 point if you consider yourself HOH)
Nope. I ceded that job to Bear. I'm a senior adviser now.

7. If you have kitty (or other animal) siblings, do you:
(Give yourself 1 point for each Yes)

Eat their food?
One point for me!

Demand that they groom you?
Uh, no. I can take care of that.

Chase them?
Puh-leeze. An elder cat doesn't deign to chase.

Stare at them relentlessly?
Not really. My eyes are closed much of the time.

Stalk them?
That's up there with chasing. Not happening.

Pounce on them?
Ditto that.

Make them meow?
Only if they're joining me in demanding food from the humans.

Steal their (well, *your*) toys?
Nah. We have plenty to go around.

Make them growl?
Nope.

Make their ears go backwards?
Nope. I concentrate on bedeviling the humans, not my sibs.

Pretend to be grooming (or staring at the wall, ceiling, etc.) while actually stalking them?
Nope.

8. Have you ever destroyed household items?
(1 point for each yes)
Furniture?
No. I kind of like the furniture.

Clothing or shoes?
Not to my knowledge.

Kitty Toys?
Yeah, I've shredded a few of those. One point for me.

9. Please list any other crazy things you do that are ridiculously feisty (1 point per).
1 point- Turned on the oven with my teeth
1 point- jumped OVER the shower door
1 point- Have to be put under at the vet to have an exam due to my ridiculously FEISTY behavior
1 point- Extra point for the way I make my sistercat squeak!

I'll give myself one point for biting the vet. Actually, I could claim several points, but I'll just take one for the general practice.

Another point for systematically depositing hairballs on important paperwork, like completed tax returns and outgoing bills.

One point for de-railing the screen on the deck slider and making my escape to the outdoors.

Another point for pulling out the input jacks to the TiVo so that it didn't record the peeps' favorite shows.

One point for general destruction of breakable objects foolishly left on counter or tabletops. No better way to get a human's attention than by summoning them with a loud meow and then swiping a cellphone or wine glass, sending it hurtling toward the floor.

Total Score: 11

At Charlie's age, I would have scored high enough to be a real menace. I'm a cool cat now, but I still know how to be feisty!

A DDP in advance?

The Diary Lady chose my diary today, but I think that must be because of the server upgrade. I haven't written anything new since my last DDP honor! Unless maybe the Diary Lady is telepathic?

Anyway, I now feel compelled to write something new for my friends. And what's new is that the male two-legger here has gone back to school. Yep. He's having a hard time finding a new job, and has decided that he needs to upgrade his tech skills. So he's studying database architecture or something like that. Maybe he will need some Man Cats with tool belts to help him build databases.

Thanks to all my friends to congratulated me on my last DDP. Big Harry made an awesome pic, which I made a copy of to put on my page. Thanks, Harry!

1. Meow! Are you a noisy kitty or a quiet kitty?
Very noisy indeed. I have a little Siamese in me, Mom thinks, and since my hearing isn't what it used to be, I talk even louder than usual. She's always telling me there's no need to shout.

2. Litterbox! Cover your business or let some other kitty cover?
I will get in the litterbox to do my business. That's enough to expect.

3. Happy! Favorite Daily Routine?
Breakfast! And Second Breakfast! And Elevenses! And Lunch! And so on!

4. Hiss! Least Favorite Routine?
Getting my claws trimmed. Mom has to wear leather gloves.

5. Ding-Dong! What do you think about visitors to your house?
I like visitors. I especially like craftsmen. The Man Cat in me wants to strap on my tool belt and help out.

6. Friends! Do you like other animals?
I like other animals. Even dogs.

Whew! Good news

Well, the vet assured Mom that I almost certainly do NOT have Pemphigus erythramatosis. I never looked anywhere as bad as that poor kitty in the felipedia.org pictures, but the vet did agree that my crusty skin patches had gotten worse. He still thinks allergy of some kind, but I don't scratch myself, so whatever it is doesn't make me itchy.

I'm back on prednisone, and also on prescription Z/D food. I got a B12 shot, too. (Thanks for the tip, Alex!) The vet said the prescription food would be good for my sister Vicki, too, who has occasional digestive issues. She's a sweet fluff of white with big blue eyes, but when she breaks wind, my friends, she will clear the room.

I like the new food very much. Actually I like all food very much. But it has a smooth paté-type texture and Vicki will not eat that. Mom is going to mix it into her shredded food.

Thank you to all my Catster pals who sent me greetings for my 16th birthday. You are very good to remember this Old Furt.

I am feeling good, enjoying nice naps in the summer sun puddles and eating up a storm. Mom wishes I would gain some weight, but she's also envious that I can eat so much without gaining an ounce!

Remembering Adam Dylan

Just had to take a moment to salute a courageous cat and his wonderful, loving Mom. Adam Dylan was quite a rascal. First he gave the vets a mystery to solve (what's wrong with Adam?). Then he gave his Mom, Christy, fits as she tried to feed and medicate him. He was always a stubborn sort of Man Cat, but then that's part of being a Man Cat.

And he was always there for the rest of us, commiserating and encouraging and generally just being a friend.

And such a cat! Right up the end, when he felt the pull of the Bridge, he still stiff-armed it long enough to chase a bug down the hallway. Wow. That's a scene that will be with me forever. What an incredible cat.

Adam, I'm looking forward to spending time with you at the Bridge one day. Will you teach me your magic?

Old cat learns new trick

The weather lately has been exceptionally lovely. The kind of sunny, balmy days that make you want to slip on the harness and leash, go for a nice stroll in the soft grass and sniff the dandelions. But despite my finest and most persistent yowling, the peeps have been stingy with the outdoors time.

So today I took matters into my own paws. Or maybe it was a well-placed headbonk. Anyway, Mom came into the family room this afternoon and found the slider screen to the deck pushed off its track. The bottom of the screen was pushed out about four inches, plenty wide enough for a lithe feline to slip through.

A fast head count followed. Bear, check. Vicki, check. Severian, check. Jasper.... Jasper?

Just as she clicked the slider screen back into its track to keep the sibs inside, I trotted up the deck stairs from the lawn, with dandelion pollen on my nose.

Well! I was swept off my feet and plopped back in the house faster than you could say catnip martini.

Now the peeps are trying to figure out how to both enjoy the balmy breeze and secure the slider screen against further escapes. Go ahead and try, humans. If I had a sleeve, I would have many more tricks up it.

The sublime pleasure of open windows.

Today was Easter Sunday, and the most pleasant day this household of cats has seen in many months. The sun was out, the breeze was a warm zephyr and the peeps opened windows and sliders to let it all in. We all found places next to the screens to sniff that lovely spring smell and feel the sun warm our fur.

The side porch became accessible again, too, and Bear and Vicki took advantage of the window shelves there to watch the squirrels scampering around, trying to remember where they buried those nuts last fall.

Aaaaah, spring!
