Thank you, my BOCU buddies

The 'rents were working all day and missed my DDP honor, but never fear, I will see to it that the requisite treats are dispensed.

Thank you, my friends at Brilliant Orange Cats Unite, for the commemorative pic. I copied it from the BOCU page for my page, and what a treat it was to scan down through the list of previous honorees and admire them all again.

The good news is that my blood test showed my thyroid hormone is now in the normal range, and I gained two ounces. That's good, because my birthday suit is starting to feel a little loose. Tuna cupcakes for all!

Side effects, and ANOTHER medicine.

The medicine I'm taking for my hyperthyroidism has some unpleasant side effects. First, it made my chronic constipation way, way worse. Mom had to stop the Zyrtec and increase the lactulose, and when even that didn't help, she cut the Tapazole dose in half.

That got things moving again, but we'll have to see if that dosage is enough to deal with the thyroid problem. I went to the vet again today to donate some more blood so they can check my progress.

The other thing the hyperthyroid medicine did was make my achy, breaky joints even stiffer and sorer. Mom just about cried watching me go down the three steps from the family room into the kitchen.

So the vet gave her a medicine called Adequan. It's mostly used on horses and dogs, but apparently lots of vets use it off-label for cats. Mom is to give it to me as an injection twice a week for four weeks, then once a month. Has anybody used this medicine?

The little basket where Mom keeps our cat medicines is overflowing! She will have to get a bigger one.

My thyroid is hyper

The pink monkeys hauled me off to the vet again this week. I have lost a half-pound even though I eat twice as much as the other cats. The vet tested me again for hyperthyroidism, even though every previous test for that has come back negative. Well, this time it didn't. So now I get another medicine squirted down my throat twice a day.

At least it's liver-flavored.

On the positive side, my kidney and liver numbers are stable, and my heart sounds good.

But I still have some skin issues from allergies, despite the grain-free diet and the daily Claritin. So now I have to get baths with a medicated shampoo. Is there no end to the indignities vets will subject us to?

The cat cafe

Our meal time has become very complicated. Since some of our favorite food has started containing fish (which Vicki can't tolerate), Mom has been seeking out alternatives. She went to and ordered Nature's Variety Instinct, which is 95% meat and also grain-free, because I'm allergic to corn. She got lamb, chicken and beef.

Well. It's paté-textured, which Vicki doesn't like. And Sev doesn't like any of the flavors. Bear and I like everything, so we're happy to chow down on the new grub. But then Mom noticed that my poops have become very hard and pellet-like. Too much low-residue meat, she thinks, and not enough rice and veggies and other fiber-y stuff.

So now she's mixing brown rice into my food and adding chopped chicken to Vicki's, and mixing Sev's food with the fishy food, which he likes (but then she has to feed him in his crate so Vicki doesn't get to his dish).

Today she moaned, "What am I running here, a restaurant?"

Of course she is. And might I add that the service could use improvement. Also, this eatery doesn't open early enough in the morning.

Happy Independence Day

Nobody's better at celebrating independence than we cats, right?

Hope you're all getting your fill of grilled chicken and licking the mayo off the potato salad.

Ants! What next?

Well, the pink monkeys sealed up all the crevices they could find in the cellar again, much to Bear's dismay. He was hoping for a mouse a day, at least. But today Mom came downstairs to find an invasion of ants!

Not a couple of ants on the countertop. Dozens of big black ants in the laundry room, where the litter box is. She picked up a box of laundry detergent and ants scurried out from under it. She moved the litter box and ants were hiding behind it. She made this funny pink monkey sound, like: Ack! Ack! Ack!

Long story short: After doing a lot of hopping and dancing around the laundry room, squishing ants, she moved the washer and dryer and found the beginnings of an ant nest, and in the corner on the outside wall was a small hole between the plasterboard and the quarter-round molding. She squished and swept up ants, and then got out the silicon grout and sealed the hole, and then the whole length of the molding along the outside wall.

What's next? Frogs? A plague of locusts?

I'm feeling well loved

That was a most splendid birthday. I got special treats for breakfast, lunch and dinner, a new toy and a lovely spring day full of sun puddles. And I got so many gifts and good wishes from my friends!

So thank you, Tyson, Tigger, Maizy and Smithwick, and Samoa & family, and Pooh Bear & the Carolinians (that would make a great band name), and Macy and Ashlynne and their wonderful families. A special thank you to Big Harry and his family -- they are the best, and so artistic. And Pounce, Sigmund, Dexter and Daisy, and Finney and Lacey and the lovely Angel Alex, who is a comfort to us all. And also the recently departed BooBoo angel kitty and her family. And a HUGE thank you to my beloved Aussie pal, Ka-zar. We sort of keep each other going during our respective winters by shipping sunshine back and forth. I was a little sad not to get a pawmail from the Tabbies o' Trout Town, but I understand. Hope they know I'm still thinking about them.

Tonight Mom came to rouse me for dinner, as usual. I used to be able to hear a cat food can open from two floors away, but the hearing isn't what it used to be. She picked me up and cuddled my warm little furry body, which is still soft and silky though getting a bit bony, and said she hoped I'd get lots more birthdays.

As do I. Birthdays are fabulous. I love you all and hope you get lots more of them, too.

Very sad news. My friend Bear, who suffered from feline leukemia, has gone to the Bridge. I'm sure his grieving Mom would appreciate a kind word.

Hey, everybody. I was checking in on some corral pals today, and learned that my buddy Bear (no relation to my brudder Bear) is ailing. Can you spare some purrs for a really great cat?

Very sad news for my Mom

Friends, we are in need of purrs and purrayers. Today Mom lost her favorite aunt, who was also her godmother, in a terrible car accident that also killed her cousin's husband and critically injured her cousin. They had attended Easter mass with some family members and were headed to the home of other family members to have Easter dinner.

At this point we do not know what happened to the people in the other car, but please send them purrayers as well.
