This week’s Monday Miracle is a scrappy little 3-month-old kitten who goes by the name of Mr. T. He’s named after the character in the ’80s action TV show The A-Team on account of the mohawk haircut he sported when he entered the San Jose Animal Care Center — although his path to doppelgänger-dom was not exactly a pleasant or painless one.
Back in October of this year, an employee at the Big 5 Sporting Goods store in San Jose called the care center about a tiny cat they’d noticed tied up with a chain.
“The kitten appeared to belong to a homeless person,” recalls Karen Zamel, the media relations volunteer of the Silicon Valley Pet Project, an organization who also helped out and got involved with Mr. T’s rescue and recuperation. “He had a collar, a harness, and a chain for a leash. His whiskers were trimmed off, the hair on his head was shaved in the shape of a mohawk, and he had a deep, infected wound around his left front leg, with scars wrapping around the leg.”
Karen adds that Mr. T’s leg wound led them to believe that he’d ended up with something like string or wire wrapped tightly around his leg for a long period of time. The kitten had also picked up a lip injury, which was causing him pain.
Faced with a long list of ailments, Mr. T was given antibiotics and pain medication as he began his road to recovery. (If you are so inclined and don’t mind the odd grisly photograph, an in-depth explanation of his medical issues can be found at the Tails of a Shelter Vet blog. It might be one for a post-lunch perusal.)
Luckily, Mr. T began to show healthy progress after his first week under medical watch; by the second week he only had some scars and his eye-catching hairdo to contend with.
Now at this point in his grand adventure, Mr. T is beginning the search for his forever home. He’s said to be more than friendly with other cats and dogs. When it comes to his personality, Karen says that Mr. T stands out from the crowd for all the right reasons.
“He is a very sweet boy who has been through a lot but yet he always retains his loving nature,” she says of this adorable little fighter. “Despite all the abuse this kitten has endured, he is the most loving and affectionate kitten! He loves to cuddle and sit on your lap. As soon as he sees you, he will purr and not stop.”
As for the burning question about Mr. T’s distinctive haircut? Well, it appears that he won’t be channeling the spirit of B.A. Baracus for too much longer. As Karen explains, “His hair will eventually grow out, and he will become a normal-looking kitten.”
