Hartz Ultraguard Flea & Tick Collar for Cats Review in 2025: Pros, Cons & FAQ

Hartz Cat Collar Review

Review Summary

Our Final Verdict

We give Hartz Ultraguard Flea Collar for Cats a rating of 4.2 out of 5 stars.

Effectiveness: 4/5
Safety: 3.5/5
Price: 5/5

The Hartz Ultraguard is a flea and tick collar that’s geared toward cat owners who don’t want to spend a ton of money for protection. It’s for those who want an alternative to topical or oral solutions which tend to be more likely to cause side effects. Collars are ‘set it and forget it’, which are much easier to deal with. Hartz generally sells their products at a modest price, and that’s no different with their cat collar. Despite the affordability, they are still claimed to be water-resistant and last a very long time.

With a company that has been around for the better part of the last century, it would seem that its products can be trusted with confidence. So, stick around to learn more!

  • Water-resistance
Cons
  • Quality control issues

Specifications

  • Brand: Hartz
  • Protection: 7 months
  • Age limit: Cats and kittens over 12 weeks
  • Weight: 15 grams
  • Scented: Yes

Affordable Price

The thing that stands out the most with the Hartz Ultraguard compared to every other flea collar is that it has an incredibly low price. Other name brands charge anywhere from $20 to $70 for a single collar, while this one is at a fraction of that. However, we should note that the low price is due to some of the product’s weaknesses.

Effectivity and Protection

Hartz Ultraguard flea collars for cats generally have a high rating for their effectiveness. The main active ingredient in the product is tetrachlorvinphos, which is what kills and repels fleas and ticks. In total, Hartz claims 7 months’ worth of protection against pests. That isn’t far off from Seresto’s popular flea and tick collar with 8 months of protection. It also has the advantage of being water-resistant, although this only works for light rain.

Quality Control

We need to mention that there are a handful of users who have received faulty collars. This has to do with killing fleas and ticks, as well as some more serious problems. Some buyers describe that the collar only kills some fleas, but not all of them. Then again, others were satisfied with their purchase and seem to have had a good experience. It could be that the manufacturer has trouble with consistency in production, which could be from the amount of the chemical used.

Will This Fit a Large Cat?

What the Users Are Saying

It’s important to see what the majority of buyers are saying about the Ultraguard collar. We’ve gathered their insights carefully, which seem to be mixed reviews.

Most people claim that they work and have nothing negative to say. But there’s a large amount who are concerned about both the efficacy and safety of the collar. One user stated that it caused ‘chemical burns’ on their cat. Others say that they just don’t work that well at killing fleas. Even some reviews that were rated highly still had big concerns, so it’s worth keeping that in mind.

Conclusion

All in all, Hartz’s flea collar for cats has some serious potential with its price-to-performance ratio. However, the big issue is that the collar seems to not kill fleas very well but rather repel them. If you are looking to save as much money as possible, it could be worth trying out. But if you want something more reliable and safer, other options will have better results.
