Cats seem to have a way of losing or destroying their toys during an intense game of fetch or chase. Replenishing their toys regularly can become exhaustive and expensive. Rather than having to purchase often over-priced items, it might be more beneficial to you, your cat, and your bank account to get creative and build your own! You might be surprised how much more you can get out of your cat toys when you spend some time building one they truly love.

Now, coming up with stellar ideas is the hard part, so we’ve gathered our favorite DIY cat toys and listed them in an easy guide for you to use. Learning how to make cat toys is easier than ever. Each has its own step-by-step instructions to ensure you end up with a spot-on toy every time!

Important note: While cats love playing with strings and ribbons, they can be dangerous! It’s rare, but not so rare that you should ignore it – cats sometimes chew and swallow long pieces of string, yarn, or ribbon, and it can get stuck in the intestines and cause a life-threatening blockage. So, we recommend you ALWAYS supervise when your cat is using a toy with dangly bits and put them out of reach when you are not around.

  1. A veterinarian told me that toys containing string, yarn or ribbons can be harmful if the cat chews and swallows pieces of them . The pieces can get stuck in the intestines and cause a life threatening blockage. Supervise play with toys containing those materials and put the toys out of reach when playtime is over.
