If you think that you have found one of these cats or just would like to know more about them, keep reading as we discuss their appearance, temperament, intelligence, and much more. We also discuss how they get their blue eyes and other interesting facts.

8 – 10 inches

Weight:

9 – 12 pounds

Lifespan:

10 – 12 years

Colors:

Many colors and patterns

Suitable for:

Large and small families

Temperament:

Intelligent and affectionate

The Ojos Azules Cat is a relatively new cat breed that got their start in the 1980s, when a lucky cat lover noticed a tortoiseshell cat with blue eyes in New Mexico, United States. Solveig Pfleuger, a geneticist, helped identify the gene responsible for the blue eye color and was able to duplicate it without affecting the fur color, enabling Ojos Azules Cats to come in any color or pattern. This is unlike other cats with blue eyes, such as the Siamese, where the gene causing the blue eye color also strips color from the fur, resulting in a color-point fur pattern.

While the International Cat Association accepted the Ojos Azules Cat as a unique breed in 1992, it discontinued them later. Unfortunately, the gene that causes the blue eyes can result in kittens with cranial deformities and other problems.

Ojos Azules Cat Characteristics

Energy
+
A high-energy cat needs a lot of physical and mental stimulation to keep healthy and happy, while a low-energy cat needs minimal physical activity, but still needs mental stimulation. When choosing a cat, It’s important to ensure their energy levels match your lifestyle.
Trainability
+
Cats that are easy-to-train are more willing and skilled at quickly learning prompts and actions with minimal training. Harder-to-train cats are usually more stubborn or aloof and require a bit more patience and practice.
Health
+
Certain cat breeds are more prone to various genetic health problems, and some more than others. This doesn’t mean that every cat in those breeds will have these issues, but they do have an increased risk, so it’s important to understand and prepare for any additional needs they may require.
Lifespan
+
Due to their size or potential genetic health issues of a specific breed, some cats have shorter lifespans than others. Proper nutrition, exercise, mental stimulation, and hygiene also play an important role in your cat’s lifespan and quality of life.
Sociability
+
Some cat breeds are more social than others, both towards humans and other cats and animals. Cats that are more social have a tendency to rub up on strangers for scratches or jump on laps for cuddles, while cats that are less social shy away, hide, are more cautious, and even potentially aggressive. No matter the breed or gender, it’s important to socialize your cat and expose them to many different situations.

Ojos Azules Kittens

Ojos Azules kittens are playful and curious, like most kittens, and they need plenty of attention to keep them out of trouble. You will also need to socialize them with other pets, especially any other cats that you have, so they will all get along when your kitten becomes an adult.

However, it can be quite difficult to find a breeder because the registry was discontinued due to possible health problems, and there were only ever a few descendants of the original cat. If you are lucky enough to find one, they will likely be quite expensive.

Temperament & Intelligence of the Ojos Azules Cat

Unfortunately, since these cats are so rare, we don’t know much about them beyond their deep blue eyes. However, owners describe them as affectionate and friendly, forming strong bonds with their family members. Some can be more independent and shyer.

Ojos Azules Cats are likely to exhibit typical feline intelligence, which includes curiosity and adaptability to their environment. Puzzle toys and interactive play can provide mental stimulation, and you can train them to perform simple tasks, like using a scratching post, a cat door, and a toilet instead of the litter box.

Are These Cats Good for Families?

Ojos Azules Cats are often described as friendly and typically bond with their human family members. While they can have an independent streak, many Ojos Azules Cats prefer the company of their owners and are sociable.

Does This Breed Get Along With Other Pets?

Ojos Azules Cats may form positive relationships with other animals in the household. However, the compatibility of these cats with the other pets can vary depending on the individual cat’s temperament, early socialization, and the specific dynamics of the household. If a particular Ojos Azules Cat has a laidback or easy-going demeanor, they are more likely to get along with other animals.

Things to Know When Owning an Ojos Azules Cat

Food & Diet Requirements

Your Ojos Azules will need a high-quality commercial cat food that features real meat like chicken or turkey listed as the first ingredient. It should be appropriate for your cat’s age and health and provide a balanced mix of nutrients, including essential vitamins and minerals. Avoid feeding human food to your cat, as certain items, such as onions, garlic, chocolate, and caffeine, can be toxic.

Also, be cautious when feeding them raw meat due to potential bacterial contamination. Be mindful of portion sizes to prevent obesity. Follow the feeding guidelines on the cat food packaging, and adjust as needed based on your cat’s individual metabolism and activity level.

Exercise

Engage your cat in interactive play with toys like feather wands, laser pointers, or interactive puzzles to provide them with physical exercise and mental stimulation. Set up cat furniture like cat trees and scratching posts so they can scratch, jump, and climb, and rotate toys frequently to keep them interested. Catnip can help encourage play, as can regular scheduled play sessions that get them into a routine.

Training

If possible, start training your Ojos Azules Cat at a young age. Kittens are often more receptive to learning and adapting to new behaviors. Use positive reinforcement techniques like treats, praise, or play to reward your cat when they exhibit a desired behavior. Keep training sessions short and engaging. Cats have shorter attention spans compared to dogs, so a few minutes of focused training is often more effective than longer sessions.

Grooming

Brush your Ojos Azules Cat’s coat regularly to remove loose fur and prevent matting. Even though their coat is generally short, regular brushing helps reduce shedding and keeps the coat shiny. Trim your cat’s nails as needed. Indoor cats may require more frequent nail trims than outdoor cats, and it’s also important to brush your cat’s teeth regularly using a cat-specific toothbrush and toothpaste. Dental treats or toys designed to promote oral health can be beneficial.

Health and Conditions

Minor Conditions
  • Obesity
  • Dental Disease
Serious Conditions
  • Feline Urinary Tract Disease
  • Lyphoma

Serious Conditions:

Feline urinary tract disease is a common disease in cats, resulting in signs that can include increased urination, difficulty urinating, and blood in the urine.

Lymphoma is the most common type of cancer that occurs in cats and is usually in the small intestine of older cats. Signs include weight loss, vomiting, and diarrhea. While aggressive, treatment with chemotherapy is sometimes possible.

Minor Conditions:

Obesity is a serious issue with domestic cats, with some reports suggesting that more than half of domestic cats are overweight, which can contribute to various health issues, including heart disease and diabetes. Proper portion control and plenty of exercise are critical for keeping your pet at an ideal weight.

Dental disease is a common issue among cats, with more than half over the age of 3 suffering from some form of it. The most common problems are swelling of the gums and tooth resorption. You can help slow the progression by manually brushing their teeth as frequently as possible and using dental chews and toys.

Male vs. Female

In general, male cats are typically larger than females, with a more muscular build. However, the specific traits of Ojos Azules Cats, including their eye color and coat color and pattern, are not necessarily influenced by sex.

Final Thoughts

While the Ojos Azules Cat is certainly attractive, they’re extremely rare. They may even be extinct due to the International Cat Association revoking the standard. This was due to possible health issues that could arise when breeding cats with the genetic mutation that caused the Ojos Azules Cat to have blue eyes without affecting the fur.

There are so few of these cats that it is hard to find information about available breeders, so you’ll be quite lucky to find one, but if you do, they’ll need the same care and attention as any other breed.
