The Ojos Azules Cat is an extremely rare and possibly extinct breed that has deep blue eyes and a friendly personality. Breed Overview

The Ojos Azules Cat is a relatively new cat breed that got their start in the 1980s, when a lucky cat lover noticed a tortoiseshell cat with blue eyes in New Mexico, United States. Solveig Pfleuger, a geneticist, helped identify the gene responsible for the blue eye color and was able to duplicate it without affecting the fur color, enabling Ojos Azules Cats to come in any color or pattern. This is unlike other cats with blue eyes, such as the Siamese, where the gene causing the blue eye color also strips color from the fur, resulting in a color-point fur pattern.

While the International Cat Association accepted the Ojos Azules Cat as a unique breed in 1992, it discontinued them later. Unfortunately, the gene that causes the blue eyes can result in kittens with cranial deformities and other problems.
