Goodbye, my friend....

today was the last day I got to see my human mommy. She has taken such good care of me the last 5 years. She managed to trap me and took me to the vet about 4 years ago. I got neutered and vaccinated and they even took blood to make sure I was healthy. The vet told her I was very healthy, but had a bad cold that would need medication to help me feel better. She took me home and kept me inside a huge crate for a week to make sure I got my meds daily and recovered okay. After that, she took me back outside and let me run free. I was really happy she let me go back outside.... Not that she ever tried to hurt me when I was inside..... I just didn't feel comfortable being closed in so close to people.
My wonderful human mommy faithfully made sure me and the rest of the cat posse had lots of food and fresh water daily. I would see her the same time every morning before she would start work, so I got very used to her and her schedule. After awhile... I started to come closer to her, but I never let her touch me. She would sit just a couple feet away sometimes and talk to me.... Tell me about her day and all the other kitties she takes care of. If she didn't see me there... She would call out my name and shake the dish so I would know she was there. I would always come running.... But would wait until she left to eat my meal. I had not seen mommy in a couple of weeks as of today... I heard her.... But I just couldn't get to her.
Today, I was in the salvage yard next door and some guys were talking about how I didn't look good. The one guy said they would go next door and see if my mommy was thereso she could help me. Mommy came a few minutes later with the guy behind her. I peeked out from behind the car i was hunkered under. She looked at me and called out to me. "Tom... Oh no, Tom. I'm here, please let me help you." I yowled out a few times as I knew she could help me.... But I was still scared a bit. I started to move away and she kept calling put to me asking me to trust her as she wanred to help me. I was feeling very weak today, and when I tried to move.... My legs just buckled under me. She got close after a few minutes of coaxing and pet me on the back and told me everything was going to be okay. She picked me up and I just went limp... Too tired and weak to be scared anymore. She put me in a carrier.... And off we went to the vet. She kept asking me what happened that I got so skinny so fast and asked me if I got into a fight.
I heard her talking to the Dr and telling them that if there was anything they could do to help me.... Please do it. She said she would take me home with her and do whatever was needed to help me. After the vet looked at me... She told mommy that I had a very big ulcer in my mouth...... It was infected and it had spread through my body. She told mommy that I probably haven't been able to eat the last couple of weeks.... And that was a big contribution to my very rapid weight loss. The vet said the ulcer was a tumor.... So cancer was my diagnosis. She said even if she spent a million dollars.... She would not suggest putting me through tests and treatments due to the advanced stage of my illness. Mommy started crying.....and we said our goodbyes.
I know I have a special place in her heart and she has one in mine.... Even though I am no longer here.... I will help her and watch over her as she looks after all the other kitties here and takes as good of care of all them as she did me. Thank you for being there for me when I was too weak to stand anymore. I know you were there for me always.
Forever in my heart.... I miss you and love you.

Beautiful boy. He lived a good life on his own terms, with help from a wonderful human. I know he appreciated the love and care and respect you gave him.

C - the work you do with your wonderful feral colony is amazing. Your boy, Tom, trusted you so completely, as you witnessed at the end. He was a beautiful boy and your love helped him always. It is for these ones that we do the work we do in rescue - the ones discarded by most of society, but still have so much love to give us, on their own terms.

Tom, I am so very sorry you had cancer. I know how bad that makes us feel. I am glad your mommy found you and helped you cross the bridge when she found out. My mum had to do that for me too. You had a nice life outside with your mommy helping. That is great. Let's celebrate your life with a big ice cream cone. I know the best spot up her for them :)

We're so very you had to come here to the bridge. It's so sad that this happened. I left my mommy very suddenly as well. I had been sick for a long time though. But it's wonderful here and you won't have one single pain anymore! You can visit your momma anytime you like too. We'll teach you!

We will be purraying for your angel-on-earth, that she will continue to have the strength and resources to care for outside kitties. I was one when I was very little. Bless you for the powerful love-bond, and enjoy all the best things over the Bridge, open fields, green grass to roll in, sunshine, friends, and everything else a kitty could ever want! Luv, Tink

Dearest Tom & Mom:
I have never been touched so much as I have before reading your story, I too was a feral in a colony before Mom realized the situation I was in. But she still contiues to care for the precious cats that are in her colony and give them the care and loving they deserve. We are so sad you made the journey to the bridge but know that it was "extra special" being helped along with your loving Mom by your side. We are so very, very sorry and know that you were welcomed with open wings and love.
Love,
Frankie & Judy

Dear Tommy's mom and Guardian Angel,
Sometimes, setting the soul free is the only choice. You are a kind and special person, please know that and know you did everything you could do..what could be done was done.
and to Tom, leap nibly into the arms of Bast little one, and run free.
This diary really made me cry, it's very moving and I want to thank you for taking care of one of the wild fur children.

love and blessings, hugs and purrs,
Debbie, Tiger, Bella, Ruffy, Smokieboo, and Natalie the Natcat.
