Ethan's mom here again. Ethan is fighting Pancreatitis. We don't know yet if it is Acute or Chronic. We are awaiting some test results next week. He is a very sick little guy. Normal treatment for Pancreatitis can't be followed due to his heart and kidney issues. He is not eating on his own but is drinking water at least. Please keep purring for him if you can. It is so appreciated! Thanks for the notes, rosettes etc. They mean a lot.

Sharon

I am purring for you Ethan! I have chronic pancreatitus :(
I also have CHF. I am taking a very small dose of prednizolone to help. I know it is not"Good" for cardiac pts but a guy has to feel good and eat. I was on an appetite stimulant and that worked good for about a month. Then I had a bad reaction to it and ended up in the hospital! That's when we started the pred. Good so far. It hasn't made my breathing worse and I am not nauseous. I don't eat as much as I should, but I am doing pretty good. I hope your mommy and the vet can find a good balance for you buddy.
Molly and I are sending purrs,
Macy

Sharon if he doesn't eat it's IMPERATIVE that you syringe feed him. If he goes longer than 48 hours without food he could develop fatty liver disease and become jaundice. Then he'll need to be hospitalized. Have you ever syringe fed a kitty before? If not, I have a page for that on my website if you need it. I can also help you. Is there any way he could take cyproheptadine? It's an appetite stimulant but not as strong as Mirtazapine which would not be good for his heart.

I have been syringe feeding Ethan since Wed. He's a very good patient. I do know about fatty liver disease and have syringe fed sick kitties for over 12 years now. One of my friends has the Assisted Feeding group on Yahoo if you are familiar with that one. Thanks a bunch for bringing this up though in case I wasn't aware! Ethan was on Cyproheptadine but it didn't work. So he is on Mirtazapine now per his cardiologist so it must be Ok for him. We are waiting for it to kick in. Thanks everyone!!

Okay good! I'm so glad you're on top of this Sharon, good for you! He's clearly in excellent hands. I wasn't sure if the Mirtazapine would be okay but if his cardiologist says it is, then good! It usually kicks in darned quick so hopefully it'll start working soon. Come on Ethan! You can do it sweetie, we all love you!

I had pancreatitis last year and boy it takes alot out of you. I didn't want to eat either and had to take miratazipine too. Our Dr also gave me a nutritional supplement called Marin along with my other meds. I was not given prednisolone though. It takes time to bounce back, but with all the purrs from those around you and your Mom's dedication, i think you will too. Sending our purrs.

Mirtazapine is the medicine that made me very sick. I did well on it for a while (a few weeks)then it sent me to the hospital.
If you notice you start meowing a lot and running around or getting a crazy look in your eyes you should probably stop taking it. I know it works for a lot of kitties and it made me eat. I don't want to scare your mommy just be aware. I hope you feel better soon.
Love,
Macy

That's because Mirtazapine is an antidepressant for people and it can cause seratonin syndrome. That happened to my Alex as well and cyproheptadine is the antidote believe it or not. So I agree, if you start acting like that, call your vet. He may tell you to give a cypro if you have any leftover or go to the ER and they'll give him some. the problem with Mirtazapine is it's long acting so if you do have a reaction, stop taking it but call the vet as well.

Hi Ethans Mom,
I had this as well!!! And a heart murmur! And CKD!
Mommy used to give me the foods I could tolerate. She found that babyfood was just about the best when I could not eat anything else.
We are all purring for you here.
We can tell you Mommy spoke with 1800Whiskers and spoke with teh owner of the store in Manhattan....he suggested to mom enzymes and a special suppliment for food....it certainly did help...

but no matter what, we're purring up a storm.
