Every morning, I ask my cat Phoenix about her plans for the day. “Are you going to eat too much food? And then sit on the footstool for six hours, maybe watch the squirrels in the yard? Perhaps throw up on the rug right before I get home?” It sounds weird, but Phoenix is actually an excellent conversationalist. She answers each question with a multifaceted, resounding “MEOW-owww-OW!”
Odds are, Phoenix found her voice early in life just like the kittens in these videos. Whether they’re aching for petting or desperate for dinner, they certainly confirm the clich├® that big things come in small packages.
1. Persistence pays off
Cowbert the kitten has a lot on his mind, and he’s not afraid to share. Perched on the edge of his cat tree, Cowbert talks until everything around him has shriveled and turned to ash due to the gravity of the cuteness at play here. Only then does Cowbert’s human finally relent and pet him already.
2. Big cat, little voice
Listening to Nala the baby cheetah use her fledgling voice is somewhat startling. She sounds like an exotic bird, or perhaps a chorus of basketball shoes squeaking on the floor of a gymnasium. Coupled with her gurgle of a purr, this baby’s first words are so cute that I need a nap now.
3. Meaningful conversation
It’s no secret that Siamese cats are among the species’ most talkative — in fact, I think the kitten in this video uses multisyllabic words and even full sentences that require punctuation.
4. Dinnertime is kind of a big deal
Following her rescue from the streets of Goa, India, this kitten completely loses her mind when she realizes she’s about to be fed. I can relate — I get ultra-chatty and weird when I’m hungry too.
5. Chorus of cute
I get that most of the kittens in this video compilation are probably meowing because they’re afraid they’ve been abandoned by their mothers and/or are struggling to deal with this strange, new, loud, bright world — but gosh darn it, who knew unfounded fears could be so cute?
