Hound and Gatos Cat Food Review 2025: Recalls, Pros & Cons

Hound & Gatos Cat Food Review

Review Summary

Our Final Verdict

We give Hound and Gatos cat food a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.

If you’re interested in getting your cat back to their historical roots with a meat-centric diet, you’re not alone. That’s the whole premise behind Hound & Gatos, a family-owned company that started in 2010.

Although their recipes aren’t 100% meat, they’re as close as you can get. They pack each recipe full of as much meat as they can, ensuring your cat gets the best of the best with each serving.

They produce all their recipes in South Dakota and ship them throughout the country, ensuring that you can give your feline companions a high-quality diet no matter where you are!

About Hound and Gatos Cat Products

Hound & Gatos started in 2010, and since then, they’ve become a leader in protein-dense diets for pet cats and dogs. With this vision and mindset in mind, they set out to produce high-quality pet food.

They only produce dog and cat foods, and each recipe uses high-quality ingredients. When you pick a Hound & Gatos product, you know you’re getting high-quality cat food every time.

Who Makes Hound & Gatos and Where Is It Produced?

Gott Pet Products purchased Hound and Gatos in 2018. Although Gott Pet Products is a family-owned Wisconsin-based company, Hound and Gatos make all its products at a plant in South Dakota. Gott Pet Products owns both Hound & Gatos and Charlee Bear natural treats. Furthermore, Wixon, Inc. is the parent company of Gott Pet Products.

Additionally, they source almost all of their products from the United States. The only exceptions are their lamb, which they get from New Zealand, and their duck, which comes from France.

Which Types of Cats Are Hound and Gatos Best Suited For?

Hound & Gatos is a great cat food for any cat, regardless of age or breed. They only feature high-quality ingredients, and their formulas have a great aroma, texture, and flavor. Even the pickiest eaters can’t get enough of Hound & Gatos.

Which Types of Cats Might Do Better With a Different Brand?

Although any cat can do great on Hound & Gatos, if you’re on a tighter budget, there are other high-quality options. We also love American Journey’s Landmark Chicken Recipe. It’s another high-quality food for your cat that costs a bit less than Hound & Gatos. Talking to a veterinarian can make your choice much easier.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good and Bad)

You want to know exactly what’s in your cat’s food, and Hound & Gatos makes figuring that out easier than ever. They’re transparent about where they get their ingredients and have a few more notable perks you should be aware of.

    98% Animal Protein

One of the goals of forming Hound and Gatos was to produce protein-dense formulas composed almost entirely of meat. That’s why 98% of the protein in their wet food comes from animal proteins. Cats have more trouble digesting protein from plant protein, but they won’t have any issues with Houng and Gatos.

    Agar-Agar Instead of Guar Gum

Most pet foods use guar gum as a thickener, but Hound and Gatos uses agar-agar, which they claim is easier to digest and less likely to trigger allergies in sensitive pets.

No Added Carbohydrates & Limited Ingredient Recipes

Excluding carbohydrates aligns with Hound and Gatos’ efforts to keep their recipes as meat-centric as possible. They don’t add carbohydrates, which can be beneficial for pets with sensitive stomachs. Their limited-ingredient recipes contain fewer components that could cause an allergic reaction.

Hound and Gatos Cat Food Review

If you’re looking for a high-quality cat food that not only meets all your cat’s nutritional needs but exceeds them, Hound & Gatos is a great choice. Overall, it’s a little more expensive than some other cat foods on the market, but you’re also getting a higher-quality product.

Hound & Gatos has never had a recall, and since they source almost all of their products in the United States, you know exactly what your cat is getting.

Even if the few products they source from outside the United States come from France and New Zealand, the two countries have extremely high-quality control standards. Also, no matter which recipe you choose, it is produced in South Dakota.

Hound and Gatos’ formulas feature several flavors, such as chicken, turkey and liver, and duck and liver. Even if you have a picky eater that doesn’t like the first recipe you put in front of them, you can find something they’ll enjoy.

Finally, Hound & Gatos uses a limited-ingredient formula with every recipe, making it easier than ever for your cat to digest. Whether your cat is a picky eater or has a sensitive stomach, Hound & Gatos is a great choice.
