Persians have a striking appearance with their gorgeous long fur. This unique appearance has made them quite popular amongst cat fanciers, but many newbie cat owners also eye these luxurious felines. But before you run out and bring a Persian home with you today, consider whether you can meet their higher-than-average grooming needs. But here are some things you can do to help keep your Persian cat’s coat soft and fluffy.

The 4 Tips for Persian Cat Grooming

1. Comb Daily & Be Strategic About Where You Comb

Persians are known for getting matted fur in several key places on their bodies, namely around the armpits, behind the ears, and the rump area. If matting isn’t prevented in the first place, the cat may suffer from irritation or infection from the building mats in the fur.

Brushing the entire coat is critical to your Persian’s well-being. We recommend using a wide-toothed metal comb for your cat’s comfort. A good slicker brush can help with de-matting and de-shedding the coat, keeping your cat and your home clean.

2. Take Care of Their Eyes

Persians are highly susceptible to tear stains because of their flat faces. Looking after their eyes is a vital part of Persian cat ownership. Gently wash your cat’s face with warm water or a vet-recommended eye cleanser. If tear stains are persistent, contact your vet for advice.

Try a natural, hypoallergenic option like Hepper's Wash Wipes, made with moisturizing ingredients and specifically designed to gently clean your cat's skin and fur. These wipes are as convenient as they are effective!

3. Consider Trimming the Perianal Area

You don’t want your cat’s fur touching their feces while they poop. That’s just gross. Trimming or buzzing the area around the anus can help your cat feel more comfortable in the commode. Doing so will improve your cat’s cleanliness and reduce the work you must do when you brush them.

4. Consider Employing a Professional Groomer

If you don’t feel comfortable bathing your cat, you can always take them to a professional pet groomer once a month to ensure their coat stays healthy and shiny. There’s a common misconception that pet grooming is only for dogs, but long-haired cats benefit from it too! Don’t worry; a veteran pet groomer has seen and bathed everyone, even cats.

These tips should be all you need to get started with easily grooming your Persian. Of course, if you’re nervous about it, you can always take your cat to a pet groomer to get their monthly trim and bath. Nevertheless, you’re well on your way to becoming a seasoned Persian owner with these grooming tips!
