Not every rescue story begins with a cat who is small enough to scoop up easily. Some begin with a cat whose body has become a barrier to comfort, mobility, and the simple joy of being a cat. 💜

At @thebighousesanctuary in Ottawa, Canada, severely overweight cats are given more than a diet plan. Founded by Kristine and inspired by Biggie Smalls, the sanctuary offers specialized care built around safe nutrition, portion control, gentle movement, ramps, play, and long-term support.

Their mission is patient, compassionate, and deeply practical: to help overlooked cats lose weight, rebuild strength, regain mobility, and feel like themselves again.

With more than 130 pounds lost across cats in their care, The Big House is proving that second chances can come one small step, one safer meal, and one brave movement at a time. 🐾

Read our Heroes of the Pet World feature and meet the people behind The Big House Sanctuary & Rehab, where severely overweight cats are given the care, patience, and support they need to feel like cats again.💜

Ever noticed your cat's ears moving in different directions?

That's because each ear can rotate independently, allowing your cat to monitor multiple sounds at once.

While one ear follows the sound of birds outside, the other might be listening for you walking into the kitchen (and opening the pantry or fridge 😹). This incredible ability helps cats stay aware of everything happening around them without needing to move their head.

This adaptation helps cats to be such efficient predators, and is why they often hear things long before we do.

👂Next time your cat is relaxing, watch their ears instead of their eyes!

🐱 Could anti-anxiety medication help reduce repeat urinary blockages in male cats?

A new study suggests lorazepam may offer vets a promising new strategy after a cat’s first urinary blockage — a life-threatening emergency that can return soon after treatment.

Researchers studied 80 male cats, giving them either lorazepam or a placebo for 30 days. Of the 72 cats that completed the trial, 5 re-blocked — and all were in the placebo group. None of the cats receiving lorazepam re-blocked during the study. 💜

The findings are hopeful, especially because stress and muscle tension may play a role in repeat blockages. But this was still a small, single-hospital study, so larger trials are needed before it becomes a standard approach.

👉 Swipe through to learn what the study found, why urinary blockages are so serious, and what this could mean for blocked cats in the future. 🐾

💜 Has your cat ever had a urinary scare or another emergency that made you rush to the vet? We’d love to hear your experience in the comments.

What would be on your cat's daily schedule?

We fully support taking the occasional cat-approved day off. ☀️🐾 What would be on your cat's daily schedule?

Sometimes, one tiny cat is all it takes to change the direction of a life. 🐾💜

Gremlin was an abandoned tortie found in a cardboard box in a Walgreens parking lot. For Mauren Kennedy—who had never owned a cat before—her curious face and signature blep quickly became the beginning of something much bigger.

@grim.stagram didn’t just become Mauren’s first cat. She opened the door to more rescues, a growing community through Cat Lady Tails, and a deeper appreciation for the humor, responsibility, and companionship that come with loving cats for life.

Her story is a reminder that sometimes the pet who unexpectedly finds their way to us ends up shaping who we become.

✨Has one special cat ever completely changed your life? 💜

🐱 A basic spay should never feel out of reach.

Across the U.S., cats and kittens are still being abandoned, surrendered, or left behind while shelters and rescues are already stretched thin. Affordable spay and neuter care is one of the clearest ways to reduce overpopulation, prevent suffering, and ease the pressure on rescue groups.

But prices can vary dramatically. While the average cat spay may cost around $250–$350, some clinics reportedly charge up to $840 for a spay and up to $560 for castration. In some cases, fees are not fully disclosed until after pet parents register or book. 😿

That matters because the impact is long-term. When preventive care becomes too expensive or confusing to access, more families may delay care, more cats may remain unaltered, and shelters may be left carrying a burden they cannot solve alone.

👉Swipe through to learn why spay and neuter affordability, transparency, and access matter far beyond one vet bill. 🐾

💜 Have you ever been surprised by the cost of basic preventive care for your cat? We’d love to hear your thoughts in the comments.
