“IR Cats” Blog Mixes Cat Memes and International Relations

A Harvard student has found a creative (and cute) way to comment on the news of the world.

Tae Hu is fascinated by international affairs and, as a result, is probably one of the better-informed people in the U.S. when it comes to what’s happening in the world outside our borders.

He’s also a big fan of LOLcats.

Earlier this year, Hu combined his two favorite things into a blog called International Relations as Depicted by Cats. Hu keeps up with what’s going on around the world and finds pictures of cats that work with his commentary -- not all of which is safe for work or kids, by the way.

For better or worse, it’s not easy to get most Americans to take an interest in international affairs beyond what they hear in sound bites on TV. I like to consider myself reasonably well informed, but some of the “IR Cats” Hu has posted have gotten me interested in delving more deeply into stories I’m aware of, and finding out what he means with the photo of a falling cat with the caption “South Africa,” for example.

If LOLcats get people thinking about international affairs -- and chuckling at the same time -- I think it’s a win-win situation.
