Of course I have special skills, I'm a CAT!!!
One year after my beautiful Smokey passed away (at 11 yrs old), I wasn't emotionally ready for another pet, but our animal shelter was in desperate need for foster parents for orphaned kittens. I love cats so much, I figured I could help out, without getting emotionally attached...WRONG!! Hubby had never had pets and he was slightly allergic to Smokey, so he wasn't really into the idea. BUT he made the terrible mistake of agreeing to go with me to take a look, heehee!
The shelter was terribly overcrowded and the kittens were all in bad shape. The foster coordinator was really great though. We picked the biggest litter to foster. 7 kittens! Woohoo! I was SO EXCITED!!! They were only three weeks old and all terribly ill.
Well, hubby jumped right in and became Dr. Dad. He would come home from work for lunch and give them their medicines, he labeled their syringes and bottles, and even their paws so he could tell them apart. We lost one, unfortunately, and it was so heartbreaking. But, as the health of the others improved, they became the cutest, most rambunctious posse you could ever imagine.
One particular kitten, was the mastermind of trouble. He always found a way to escape the enclosure we made for them in our kitchen and everytime he did, he ran straight to my husband for cuddles and praise!! Well, it became a pride thing between the two of them, Ray-Ray trying to escape the enclosure and Hubby trying to keep him in! Hubby would sit and watch for hours to see how Ray-ray was escaping, to no avail. As soon hubby left, Ray-Ray was out of there and back on the couch with Dad.
Out of this a deep love and bond developed between Ray-Ray and his new daddy. It was a beautiful thing to see, especially for a man who had never had his own pet before. When it was time to take the kittens back for adoption. Well, we just had to adopt Ray-Ray.
To this day, its an amazing love story...
