Weruva Cat Food Review 2026: Recalls, Pros & Cons

Weruva Cat Food Review

Review Summary

Our Final Verdict

We give Weruva cat food a rating of 4.3 out of 5 stars.

Weruva Inc. was founded by Stacie and David Forman in 2007 and is named after the couple’s three cats, Webster, Rudi, and Vanessa. The company was started after the couple grew tired of trying to find high-quality food for their cats and decided to buy fresh human-grade foods and prepare their own cat food recipes.

The company remains family-owned and is currently headquartered in Natick, Massachusetts. It sells pet foods throughout the United States, the European Union, the United Kingdom, Australia, and Japan. The company manufactures all its pet foods in a USFDA-approved processing plant in Thailand.

Weruva prides itself on the quality of the fresh food products it uses in its pet foods, and it only uses foods and cuts of meat that are fit for human consumption.

    Weruva Cat Food Reviewed

Who Makes Weruva and Where Is It Produced?

Weruva is still a family-owned company, and while it is headquartered in the United States, all its pet foods are produced offshore in Thailand. Despite being produced overseas, all of Weruva’s pet foods still meet the standards required by the US FDA.

Which Types of Cats Is Weruva Best Suited For?

Weruva makes an extensive range of cat food products and likely has a recipe suitable for almost any cat. Its products are generally high in meat-based protein and low in carbohydrates, and many contain no grains.

The company’s various cat food product lines will appeal to those seeking high-quality pet food produced with whole meats to the same exacting standards required for human food products.

    Discussion of the Primary Ingredients

The ingredients used in Weruva pet foods are a crucial point of difference for the company, and according to its website, four main points differentiate Weruva from most other pet food manufacturers.

    Having a Carnivorous focus

Weruva Inc. recognizes that cats are carnivorous animals that need most of their calories from the protein and fats in meat and very few from carbohydrates. To that end, its products are high in animal protein and contain only 1% to 3% carbohydrates.

The use of meats fit for human consumption

Weruva prides itself on the quality of the meats that it uses in its pet foods. All the company’s foods are prepared with meats that are fit for human consumption by a processing plant in Thailand that primarily prepares human food.

    • WHISKER FRIENDLY - Shallow and wide metal containers with flat bottoms ensure your kitty can enjoy...
    • CHEW-SAFE MATERIALS - Kittens and cats love chewing on silicone and soft rubber - but it's a choking...

Feeding your cat a high-quality diet is important for keeping them healthy and happy. But it goes beyond the food you choose; the dishes they use also matter. The Hepper NomNom Cat Bowl is our favorite for its unique, five-star design that protects from whisker fatigue and promotes good posture which also aids in better digestion. As an added bonus, it’s beautifully crafted and offers a modern take on the traditional cat bowl that fits seamlessly with all home stylings. Learn more about the NomNom by clicking here.

At Catster, we’ve admired Hepper for many years and decided to take a controlling ownership interest so that we could benefit from the outstanding designs of this cool cat company!

    Produced to human food standards

Stacie and David Forman founded their company because they wanted the best quality food for their cats, and this focus on quality has continued in the company to this day.

The Thailand facility used to prepare Weruva pet foods meets the exacting requirements of arguably one of the strictest international standards, the British Retail Consortium (BRC). According to Weruva’s website, it awarded the Thai processing factory an “A” grade on the BRC standard.

    The use of identifiable ingredients

Weruva doesn’t blend their products into “machine-shaped chunks or unidentifiable loaves.” Instead, their pet foods are prepared so that you can see the main ingredients in the finished products.

    Environmental Considerations

Weruva Inc. places a significant emphasis on its environmental standards. The company uses food pouches that are both BPA-free and recyclable. In the United States, it has partnered with TerraCycle® to provide a free recycling program for empty Weruva pouches.

The company also makes use of ethical sources for its main food ingredients. All the chickens used in Weruva pet food products are raised in a cage-free, climate-controlled environment. The beef and lamb are sourced from Australia and New Zealand and are all grass feed, and all fish used (except for basa and tilapia) are ocean-caught and certified dolphin and turtle-safe.

    Recall History

In 2017, Weruva became aware that a significant number of cats in Australia became ill or died after consuming products from Weruva’s Best Feline Friend BFF product range. The company issued a stop-sale notice on its BFF canned food range in Australia while the products were reviewed and tested.

While there were initial concerns that the products may have been contaminated with heavy metals, testing conducted by the American Association of Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) ruled that out but identified that some batches of BFF were deficient in thiamine. This vitamin is essential to a cat’s diet.

All Australian customers were asked to return BFF cans manufactured with the best-before date ranging from September 2018 to October 2019.

Weruva has no recall history in the United States or anywhere else outside Australia.

    What Other Users Are Saying

As pet owners ourselves, we know the importance of being able to check the reviews of other consumers before deciding on a brand of pet food.

    • There are plenty of reviews on the Chewy website, and you can read these here.
    • Amazon is also a great place to find consumer reviews, and there are plenty of detailed reviews that you can read here.

    Conclusion

Weruva Inc is a family-based company that produces high-quality pet food. The company uses premium quality real meats in all its products and employs manufacturing standards that are more akin to foods prepared for human consumption than for pets.

Although they are American-owned and operated, all the company’s manufacturing is carried out offshore, a fact that, while not ideal, no doubt helps lower the price of their premium-quality pet foods. However, compared to many other brands, Weruva cat foods are still quite expensive, and as a result, this is not a good choice if price is your number-one concern.
