    Soulistic Cat Food Reviewed

Soulistic Cat Food is not a common cat food brand and is somewhat tricky to track down unless you have a provider in your region. However, the brand is growing in popularity because it uses recipes that tend to be highly breed-aware.

Who Makes Soulistic Cat Food & Where Is It Produced?

Weruva produces Soulistic Cat Food. Weruva is a family-owned pet food manufacturer based in the U.S. It produces Soulistic as a Petco-exclusive food brand.

David and Stacie Forman founded Weruva in 2006. The brand came to be known for its high-moisture food high in protein and meat-based and its formulas that have simple recipes with few ingredients.

Unfortunately, even though Weruva is based in the U.S., Soulistic formulas are produced in a facility in Thailand. The facility does maintain the highest level certifications put out by the British Retail Consortium even though the food-grade quality standards in Thailand are much lower.

Which Types of Cats Is Soulistic Best Suited For?

Soulistic Cat Food is best for cats that prefer wet food. All of Soulistic’s current cat food recipes are wet, canned, or bagged foods. If your cat prefers a wet food texture, they will likely love this food.

The Soulistic wet foods are also best for cats with food allergies to the preservatives and additives commonly found in other cat foods. Soulistic makes a point of keeping its formulas simple, filling them with limited ingredients. It also keeps the quality of these ingredients at the forefront of its formula policies.

Which Types of Cats Might Do Better With a Different Brand?

Some cats do not enjoy the texture of wet food as much as eating dry kibble. If your cat needs a limited-ingredient cat food but prefers dry food, you can try Natural Balance’s L.I.D. Dry Cat Food.

Discussion of the Primary Ingredients (Good & Bad)

When you look for food for your pet, you should always consider their diet in the wild. Try to find food whose ingredient analysis breaks down in a similar way to their natural diet. This focus for a brand or buyer is called “species-appropriateness.” It means that your cat is getting everything that they need without getting things they don’t. Soulistic does a decent job of balancing this in their wet food.

    Moisture Content

When it comes to wet food, you will have high moisture levels. These are essential for preserving the food inside. As long as you don’t see water as one of the first ingredients, you should be fine.

Water actually isn’t the best way that companies can get to their desired moisture levels. For example, in some of Soulistic’s recipes, fish or chicken broth makes up the moisture levels. This means the liquid in the food also contributes to the recipe’s nutritional value. Most of Soulistic’s foods have a maximum moisture level of 85%.

    First Ingredients

When looking into a new recipe for your cat, it is always best to examine the ingredient list thoroughly. The first ingredients are always those that are in the highest quantity in the recipe. In food for a carnivore, this should be the meat that it claims to have.

The first ingredients should not include fillers, like brewer’s yeast, grains, or rice. None of these contain much nutritional value. Instead, they make your cat feel full quickly. They eat less, and what they do eat does not have as much nutrition as it should.

Look for the top ingredients to be meat or some kind of vegetable that provides protein in the food. High enough protein levels are the most crucial factors in a cat’s diet.

    Taurine Levels

Taurine is an essential amino acid. It only occurs naturally in animal-based proteins. That is why it is essential for cats to not get their food only from vegetables, even legumes that contain protein. The amino acids are not the same and will not provide them with the diet that they need.

In a cat, taurine is essential for them to form and maintain their digestive functions, normal vision, and the function of their heart and other organs. It is needed in even more significant amounts for pregnant cats if you want the fetuses to develop as they should. It also boosts your cat’s immune system.

Although you can find taurine in the breakdown of animal meats included in the recipe, it is a good indicator if it is a separate ingredient. Soulistic Cat Foods includes it as such, meaning your cat will get plenty of this essential amino acid in each bite.

    Unnecessary Extras

There are many foods sold for dogs and cats that contain unhealthy fillers. Keep an eye out for them in any recipe that you buy for your cat. Each bite that contains fillers deprives your pet of the nutrition that should be in that bite. Try to avoid foods with unnecessary extras.

Soulistic Cat Food does not contain any fillers. It provides cat owners with a gluten-free diet. One controversial ingredient that it does contain is tapioca starch, which is unnecessary for anything except to thicken the consistency of the food. It increases the level of carbohydrates in the food as well. That is not a good thing for felines.

    Recall History

Soulistic Cat Food has never been recalled. The closest recall related to this food brand is that of B.F.F., or Best Feline Friend, produced by Weruva. B.F.F. had a recall in 2017 when the canned products sold in Australia didn’t contain sufficient thiamine levels to maintain a cat’s health. These products had been isolated and produced for the Australian market and were only recalled in Australia.

Reviews of the 3 Best Soulistic Cat Food Recipes

Soulistic Cat Food has a small number of options for a variety of recipes and formulas. However, of those options, it tries to keep as species-appropriate and straightforward as possible. Although these come with heftier price tags, you may well decide that they are worth it.

    1. Soulistic Originals Pure Bliss Tuna Whole Meat Dinner in Gravy – Our Favorite

Soulistic Originals Pure Bliss Tuna is our number-one choice for the best of its cat food recipes. The company works hard to source all of its ingredients from high-quality and environmentally friendly industries. It ensures that all the tuna for this recipe is responsibly caught, ensuring that it does not harm dolphins or sea turtles.

This recipe contains whole meat tuna flakes in gravy, providing cats with a high-protein, hydrating meal. There are reports that cats with sensitive stomachs responded well to this formula since it is also free from grains, gluten, and carrageenan.

The only downside that we can see to this recipe is the inclusion of a thickening agent, tapioca starch. The ingredient increases the number of carbohydrates in the food. Otherwise, it contains plenty of protein, vitamins, and minerals and is easily digested by cats.

    Calorie Breakdown:

    Soulistic Luna Tuna Pouch Review

    Pros
    • Moisture-rich formula
    • Sustainably sourced tuna
    • Suitable for cats with sensitive stomachs
    Cons
    • Contains tapioca starch

    2. Soulistic Originals Good Karma Chicken Dinner in Gravy – Best Chicken Recipe

The Soulistic Originals Good Karma recipe offers shredded chicken in a flavorful gravy, providing a protein-rich meal without fish ingredients. It’s ideal for cats that prefer poultry or have sensitivities to fish. The food provides cats with plenty of vitamins and minerals that cats need to maintain healthy immune and digestive systems.

Although chicken broth and chicken are the first two ingredients in this Soulistic recipe, it also contains tapioca starch and sunflower seed oil, which are not the best. Some customers have noted that the product contains more gravy than meat, which may not be suitable for all cats.

    Calorie Breakdown:

Soulistic Polynesian Picnic Chicken & Tilapia Dinner - In Gelée Review

    Pros
    • High-quality shredded chicken as main ingredient
    • High in protein, vitamins, and minerals
    • Grain & gluten free
    Cons
    • Contains tapioca starch
    • Higher gravy-to-meat ratio than some other products

    3. Soulistic Pate Duck & Tuna Dinner in a Hydrating Puree – Best Pate Recipe

This paté combines duck and tuna in a smooth, hydrating puree, offering a high-moisture meal that’s easy for cats to consume. The formula provides essential nutrients and hydration, making it suitable for cats that need additional moisture in their diet. According to customer reviews, most cats enjoy the flavor.

Like all of Soulistic’s other formulas, this food doesn’t contain any grains and is entirely gluten-free. However, it is best if cat foods do not contain binding ingredients like guar and locust bean gum since these increase the amount of carbohydrates in the food and might trigger allergic reactions. This food could be slightly more species-appropriate if the company used animal-sourced fat as its primary fat source. Instead, the recipe includes sunflower seed oil, which isn’t as digestible for most cats.

    Calorie Breakdown:

    • Smooth texture for cats with dental issues
    • High-quality protein, vitamins, and minerals

    Conclusion

Soulistic Cat Food is, overall, a good cat food that remains average to good in many categories, including quality of ingredients, species-appropriateness, and quality of production. The company works hard to ensure that the food is high-grade even though it is not produced in America.

If you need a wet cat food that is gluten-free and minimizes the number of ingredients involved, you can give Soulistic a try, knowing that it is likely to be food that your cat will enjoy.

    1. i just tried Soulistic wet food; looks and smells good, but the purpleish cans with ringtop are
difficult/impossible to open. Suggestions? does it come in smaller cans, with smaller lids? jwilliams, ny ny

      1. Hi tippi. It is quite common for some "ring-pull" cans, especially the 5.5oz Soulistic varieties, to have high-tension lids that are difficult to maneuver for many pet parents. To avoid the struggle, you might try using a can tab puller or even the back of a sturdy metal spoon to lever the ring up, which provides much-needed mechanical advantage without straining your fingers. While Soulistic does come in smaller 3.0oz cans that have smaller lids and are often slightly easier to "pop," they still utilize the same pull-tab design
