Fussie Cat Food Review of 2024: Recalls, Pros & Cons

Review Summary

Our Final Verdict

We give Fussie cat food a rating of 4.8 out of 5.0 stars.

This cat food is one of the higher-quality options on the market. It is made with whole meat in Thailand following strict guidelines. The recipes are quite high in protein and fat, which is exactly what cats need to thrive.

Fussie Cat is generally considered a high-quality cat food brand. They offer a range of wet and dry foods. Their website states that their food is “Physiologically Correct”, which means it contains plenty of animal meats. Since cats are obligate carnivores, they were designed to thrive off of a full-meat diet.

Their food is made in an FDA-registered kitchen in Thailand. This kitchen also produces canned food for human consumption, following the same guidelines as the cat food.

This food is generally great for picky cats, as they tailor their recipes to match real cat taste testers. If your feline doesn’t have much of an appetite, this food may be worth looking at.

Who Makes Fussie Cat Food, and Where Is It Produced?

Fussie Cat is made in Thailand exclusively. It is made in an FDA-registered facility that also produces canned food for human consumption. The cat food is made according to the same guidelines as the human canned food. Therefore, their cat food is made with extra safeguards when compared to most other brands.

Their foods are also made according to international standards, which are a bit stricter than following one country’s standards alone.

Their market-fresh dry kibble is made in the United States. However, their premium and super-premium canned food is made in a top-quality facility in Thailand. This is not China, which is where the contamination of 2007 happened.

Thailand has rigorous standards for food production. Food exports are a large part of Thailand’s economy, so they take it very seriously. This location also has an abundant source of fresh fish and other seafood. There are also lower amounts of pollutants in the air and mercury in the wild.

    Fussie Product Range

Fussie has a wide range of products, including both dry and wet cat food. Their flavor range seems to be limited. Many flavors are repeated. They have multiple canned foods with “tuna” as the main ingredient, for instance.

Their dry food range is significantly smaller than their wet food range. They do not have any recipes explicitly designed for kittens or senior cats. However, their products are designed for felines of all ages. You can use any of their recipes for kittens and senior cats.

Fussie Cat Market Fresh Salmon Recipe Grain-Free Dry Cat Food

Many of their recipes are free from common allergens like chicken. If your cat is sensitive to these ingredients, you’ll likely be able to find a recipe that is free from them.

    Fussie Cat Nutrition

Fussie Cat has an above-average protein content in their food. They have a lower amount of carbohydrates than many other cat foods, which better matches our cat’s natural diet. Because cats are obligate carnivores, they are designed to thrive on a high-fat and protein diet. Fussie Cat’s formulas often match this requirement.

    Fussie Cat Ingredients

Fussie Cat’s formulas usually include some animal meat as the first few ingredients. These include everything from tuna to chicken to duck. They have many different options. If you need to avoid chicken or any other ingredient, you should have no problem doing so.

They often use fish in their recipes, especially salmon, which is the main ingredient in many of their formulas. Their ingredients are typically easy to source and high in protein, which helps them provide high-quality food without costing a super high amount.

In their dry food recipes, legumes are expected, including peas. These are often considered lower-quality options when compared to meat. However, they are incredibly inexpensive and high in protein. They can make the formula seem higher in protein than it is, though, so be careful when the formula contains peas. Everything may not be as it appears.

Pea flour is sometimes included as well. This includes carbohydrates from peas primarily, so it is not high in protein and is essentially a by-product.

If a formula includes multiple iterations of peas, you should realize that the formula may very well include more peas than meat ingredients. This is a tactic called ingredient spilling and is a misleading tactic to make pet owners think that one ingredient occurs less, which would occur more when all combined.

Chicken fat is often included in this cat food. This is a common addition to most pet foods, as it improves the flavor. Chicken fat does not include chicken protein, so even cats that are allergic to chicken can consume chicken fat.

Of course, other ingredients are often included as well, including pumpkin and flaxseeds. These add nutrients to the cat food and improve its overall nutritional value. Generally, they are considered high-quality additions.

The 3 Best Fussie Cat Food Recipe Reviews

    1. Fussie Cat Premium Tuna with Salmon Formula in Aspic Grain-Free Canned Cat Food

Fussie Cat Premium Tuna with Salmon Formula in Aspic Grain-Free Canned Cat Food

The Fussie Cat Premium Tuna with Salmon Formula in Aspic Grain-Free Canned Cat Food is exceptionally high in protein, though somewhat low in fat. It is higher in protein than most other formulas, which can help nearly any feline out there. Tuna is the first ingredient, which is likely why it is so much higher in protein than other options on the market. Salmon is included as the first ingredient.

Most of the other ingredients are added vitamins and nutrients, like sunflower seed oil. In other words, this food mainly contains tuna, salmon, and added meat.

This food is grain-free and potato-free. It is also free from peas. Omega fatty acids are included, which support your feline’s fur and coat. It is pretty low in saturated fat, so it may work well for felines requiring a low-fat diet. Flavorful tuna is included as the first ingredient, with salmon included as the second. For this reason, it is generally quite tasty and suitable for picky cats.

    Calorie Breakdown:

    Pros

    • High-quality meats included
    • No fillers, potatoes, peas, or grain
    • Tasty for picky cats
    Cons

    2. Fussie Cat Market Fresh Chicken & Turkey Recipe Grain-Free Dry Cat Food

Fussie Cat Market Fresh Chicken & Turkey Recipe Grain-Free Dry Cat Food

The Fussie Cat Market Fresh Chicken & Turkey Recipe Grain-Free Dry Cat Food is a higher quality dry food formula, though all of their dry food formulas are pretty good. The first ingredient is chicken, with chicken meal as the second ingredient. These are both decently high-quality ingredient items, as long as your feline isn’t sensitive to chicken. Because both of these foods are high in protein, the overall formula is pretty high in protein and fat.

However, peas are included as the third ingredient and pea flour is included further down on the list. This is an obvious example of ingredient splitting, which means this formula is probably higher in peas than it first appears. Chickpeas are included as well, which is another low-quality legume. Other types of meat are also included, like turkey meat and chicken fat.

This formula is free from grains and potatoes, which is suitable for felines with sensitivities. Plus, it is better for cats overall.

While this food is good overall, it is expensive and includes quite a bit of peas. It isn’t quite as good as their wet food formulas, which are often free from peas.

    Calorie Breakdown:

Fussie Cat Market Fresh Chicken And Turkey Review

    • Grain-free and potato-free

    What Other Users Are Saying

Many users reported that their picky feline loved this food, though an equally large group reported that their picky cat wouldn’t eat it at all. It seems to be a matter of the cat’s personal preference, as it is with most foods.

Some of the wet foods seem to have a shredded texture, which some cats don’t like. We expect that it is a texture problem and not a taste one.

Many reported that the cans are pretty sturdy. This is great, as they don’t bust in shipping. However, they are somewhat difficult to open for this reason. They are made very sturdily.

Many cats with allergies enjoy this food, as they have many chicken-free options available.

    Conclusion

Fussie Cat is one of the higher-quality options on the market. It is high in protein and fat. The ingredients are typically relatively high-quality, including whole meat and similar high-quality ingredients. There are chicken-free formulas as well, making it a suitable option for cats with allergies as well.

They make both dry food and wet food. Their wet foods tend to be a bit higher quality with fewer fillers, like peas. Plus, the canned food also contains extra water, which can help your cat stay hydrated. This can be particularly important for felines with specific health problems.

This food is only made in Thailand in high-quality FDA-registered facilities. For this reason, it does tend to be a bit expensive. It is missing many of the lower-quality fillers other foods use to keep the price down as well. For this reason, it is quite a bit more expensive than other options. Many owners find it worth the extra cost, though.

    1. I have used Fussy Cat Turkey and Chicken dry food successfully for years – feeding 8 cats over that time. A recent purchase, however, has resulted in our two cats throwing up the food, repeatedly even if offered a small portion.
Have there been any recent recalls on the product?

      1. Hi Patricia, thanks for getting in touch. As of writing this comment, there have been no FDA ordered Fussie Cat Food recalls. There are many reasons cats can throw up, ranging from something as simple as eating too fast, to more serious concerns like parasites.
