Are ramen noodles safe for cats to eat? A small nibble on ramen is not likely to cause your cat any harm but in general, no, cats should not eat ramen noodles. Reasons Why Cats Shouldn't Eat Ramen Noodles
Too Much Salt
Ramen noodles are laden with salt. Cats are more sensitive to salt than humans and too much can be toxic. According to the American College of Apothecaries, salt toxicosis may occur with 2-3g/kg of sodium chloride ingestion. Consumption of 4 g/kg can be fatal. If your cat weighs 1-10 pounds, anything more than 1/20 of a tablespoon of salt could be toxic. If your cat weighs 11-25 pounds, more than half a tablespoon of salt is considered harmful.
Salt Poisoning in Cats
The first signs of salt poisoning in cats are usually vomiting and diarrhea, but you have to consider that the symptoms can be caused by numerous other things as well. Other signs of salt poisoning are decreased appetite, lethargy, incoordination, excessive thirst, and urination. In more severe cases, you may also see tremors, seizures, coma, and possibly even death.
Carbohydrates
Cats are inherently carnivores. In the wild, they consume prey that contains high amounts of protein, moderate amounts of fat, and a minimal amount of carbohydrates. Those proportions are what we should be feeding our furry friends too. Too many carbohydrates in your cat’s diet can lead to obesity. Ideally, cats should get less than 10% of their calories from carbohydrates.
Spices
Most ramen noodles contain garlic, onions, and chives. None of these foods are safe for your cat. Onion in all forms, whether powdered, raw, cooked, or dehydrated, can break down a cat’s red blood cells, leading to anemia. Eating a large quantity or even small amounts frequently can cause onion poisoning. Garlic is five times as potent as onions, and chives can cause life-threatening problems.
Other Ingredients
Ramen noodles’ seasoning also contains preservatives that may not be good for your cat. For example, many types of ramen contain the preservative TBHQ, a phenol. Because of a cat’s inability to process phenols, TBHQ can cause liver damage. Of course, in a small dosage, it is not a concern, but if your cat consumes ramen regularly, they’re more vulnerable to the condition.
Lactose is another ingredient found in ramen seasoning, and it may come as a surprise, but most cats are actually lactose intolerant. Therefore it is always recommended to talk to a veterinarian before you add anything new to your cat's diet.
Can Cats Eat Ramen Noodles Without the Spices?
Cats should not even eat ramen noodles without the spices added because of the carbohydrates, but in moderation, as a small snack, most cats will have no adverse effects from eating plain cooked ramen. The carbohydrate content is still a concern over time with regular consumption. As stated earlier, carbs should make up no more than 10% of your cat’s daily caloric intake.
Can Cats Eat Food Similar to Ramen?
Cats can eat homemade noodles, but there are not enough nutritional benefits to justify it. Never feed your cat raw or uncooked noodles. Uncooked pasta could cause your cat to choke or even affect their digestive system.
Are There Any Health Benefits in Ramen Noodles for Your Cat?
There are no benefits to your cat’s health if they consume ramen noodles. Although eggs are a good source of protein, there is not enough egg in the noodles to outweigh the harmful ingredients.
Final Thoughts
If you are looking for a fun and healthy snack for your feline friend, ramen is not the answer. There are several healthy alternatives, such as unseasoned fish, eggs, and chicken. If your cat took a sneaky bite from your dinner they are unlikely to suffer any consequences as a one off. However, your cat will experience fewer problems if you primarily serve high-quality cat food, fresh water, and healthy treats.
