Well, of course, my natural reaction is always GAHHH FIX THE CAT! Thankfully Ruthie has already expressed her interest in getting Gracie fixed, and I even recommended some low cost spay/neuter clinics in her area, so I can carry on with this article with dignity and grace.
I suspect most people are familiar with the loud cries of a cat in heat. It’s a long-winded whining yowl that’s hard to miss. Having that sound inside your house should be enough to persuade you to get Gracie the ol’ snip-and-scoop. The estrus cycle lasts seven to ten days and will repeat itself every two to three weeks until that kitty gets her male cat to impregnate her (at least during the fall and spring mating seasons). Usually vets won’t spay a cat while she is in heat because of the added surgical risks when the lady bits are engorged with blood, so you may have to wait it out.
I can’t stress the importance of keeping that cat indoors as well. Aside from becoming pregnant, she is very likely to be exposed to diseases carried by the feral population. Other things you can expect are urine marking, excessive affection, restlessness, and discharge from the vulva! Ah, the delights of owning a cat!
