PetPivot AutoScooper 12 Review 2026: Our Expert Opinion

Final Verdict
2026 has not been everyone’s favorite year, but for me and my cats, there has been one thing that has put it on the map: upgrading to a self-cleaning litter box. Despite living with five cats, I had written off the idea of having an automatic litter box as an unnecessary luxury. An expense I could never quite justify. When I was given the opportunity to try one out earlier this year, I discovered that not only can you pick up an excellent self-cleaning litter box for a very reasonable price, but they are not a luxury item. They are a necessity.
Although I deeply regret not buying one years ago, one benefit of waiting is that there are now more options, better designs, and lower prices than ever before. This is particularly true when it comes to the PetPivot AutoScooper 12, and as I discovered, there is more than meets the eye with this compact and quiet unit.

Every Cat Deserves a Clean Litter Box

Ever since we started inviting cats into our homes, humans have been looking for better ways to deal with the unavoidable issue of their waste. Cats are fastidiously clean by nature, and teaching them to use a litter box is usually pretty straightforward. Keeping that litter box clean is decidedly more labor-intensive.
Maintaining good litter box hygiene isn’t just about controlling odors. Some cats will happily share a litter box, while others will refuse to use soiled litter, even if they are the only cat using it. Inappropriate toileting – that is, peeing or pooping in shoes, on bedding, in fruit bowls(!) – can be a sign of a health problem, but more often than not, it’s about the litter box itself. The wrong location, the wrong type of litter, and most significantly, a box that isn’t clean.
Unless you’re on standby, litter scooper in hand, all day every day, there will be times that your cat visits the litter box before you’ve had a chance to clean it. And if, like me, you have more than one feline in the family, you’ve likely got multiple litter boxes that you spend an immeasurable amount of time scooping, sifting, and cleaning.
One of the reasons I put off getting a self-cleaning litter box for so long was that I felt like it was something that would only benefit me. Don’t get me wrong – it most definitely has! But now I realize how much it has also improved the lives of my cats. Instead of having to wait for me to provide them with a fresh tray, the automatic cleaning function means every cat gets a clean litter box for every visit.
Not having to scoop out litter boxes every day has been a total game-changer for me, and while it’s hard to put a price on how much my cats’ quality of life has improved, it’s nice to know that, at less than $150, the PetPivot Autoscooper 12 is well within reach of most pet owners.

Product Description
The Autoscooper 12 is the newest self-cleaning litter box from PetPivot. The US company was founded in Portland, Oregon, in 2023. Following the overwhelming success of the AutoScooper 11, PetPivot released the new model in 2026, which is available in the US, Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, and Australia.
The AutoScooper 12 is a quieter, more compact unit that features upgraded motion sensors for improved safety and accuracy, and an integrated step that provides easier access for smaller cats or those with mobility issues.
Unlike the cave-like design of some of the more recognizable automatic litter boxes on the market, the AutoScooper 12 features an open-top design which most cats prefer. Enclosed litter boxes are popular because they keep a lot of the mess and smell inside, and though you might think that cats would appreciate the privacy, an open-top litter box allows your cat to keep an eye on their surroundings whilst they're 'indisposed'. This is particularly important for multi-cat households where troublemakers have been known to ambush their fellow felines when they are most vulnerable.
If you’re worried that an open litter box means more litter tracking and unpleasant odors, don’t be. The deep placement of the tray and the odor-locking design of the waste drawer minimizes litter scatter and keeps bad smells well-contained.
The litter tray contains a removable mat made from durable, water-resistant 300D Oxford fabric that minimizes ‘litter stick’ and makes cleaning a breeze. For the most part, routine cleaning of the AutoScooper 12 consists of emptying the waste drawer once or twice a week (depending on the number of cats using it) and brushing any stray litter from around the unit. No more daily scooping. You will occasionally need to give the whole unit a proper clean, but it’s a relatively painless process.
Compared with the previous model, the AutoScooper 12 takes up less floor space, but also has a slightly smaller tray, which some particularly large or messy cats may struggle with. However, the open design provides most cats with plenty of room to move, and with an operating volume of 32 dB, it’s perfect for smaller spaces and apartment living.
In terms of function and design, the AutoScooper 12 is up there with the best, at a fraction of the price. Plus, it comes in a range of different colors, including pink!

My Experience With the PetPivot AutoScooper 12
As they like to say, this isn’t my first rodeo, and having already been converted to the wonders of a self-cleaning litter box, I felt particularly qualified to assess this latest offering from PetPivot.
Unlike my other unit, the AutoScooper 12 arrived virtually fully assembled, and once I’d unpacked the various components from their boxes or bags, I only needed to attach the legs, insert a liner into the waste tray, and attach the step to the front. Add some clumping bentonite-clay litter and presto! With a tray area of 12” x 14”, the AutoScooper 12 is quite a bit smaller than my 15” x 16” unit, but the actual litter volume capacity is quite similar, so this will only be an issue if you have particularly large cats.
Being naturally curious and experienced automatic litter box users, my cats wasted no time becoming intimately familiar with their shiny new toilet, and the AutoScooper 12 is even quieter than the one I already have! When given the option of using their old top-entry, enclosed litter box, all five cats chose the open-topped AutoScooper every time.
One thing I did notice is that while my other unit will pause mid-cycle if you look at it wrong, the AutoScooper 12 is not quite as sensitive. This could raise flags about safety, but the design of the AutoScooper 12 means that there is only one point towards the end of the cleaning cycle where a gap large enough for a cat appears. Any motion in the area at this stage paused the cycle immediately.
To allow waste storage, self-cleaning litter boxes are unavoidably tall, and I really like how the AutoScooper’s step latches onto the waste drawer. I particularly liked that the waste drawer came out the front, unlike my other unit where I have to shimmy things around to open it from the side.
The waste tray capacity is very impressive, and after a week (used alongside my other litter box), the AutoScooper 12 was holding around 6.4 lbs (2.9kg) of soiled litter and waste, compared with 5.7 lbs (2.6kg) in the other unit. That means more days without having to perform litter box duties. If used on its own with a single cat, I would estimate that it would take at least 10-14 days for the waste drawer to register as full. However, it is recommended that you empty the drawer every 5-7 days, depending on conditions, to avoid odors, mould, and flies.
Imagine going from daily sifting and scooping to just ditching a bag of used kitty litter one or twice a week – It is bliss.
There were only a couple of things I was a bit bummed about with the AutoScooper 12. Not having an alternative litter guard option to allow the use of long-fiber cat litters like tofu is a shame, particularly as these more eco-friendly materials are becoming more popular.
Another slight design flaw is that litter and debris accumulate around the top of the tray where the liner meets the unit, and need to be dislodged with a brush.
Overall, I think the AutoScooper 12 from PetPivot is a really nice little unit, particularly for the price. It could be a tad small if you’ve got a big Maine Coon or similarlylarge breed of cat, but for everyone else, the compact size means you won’t struggle to find space to accommodate it.
If you’re on the fence about getting a self-cleaning litter box, but aren’t sure if your budget can stretch to such luxuries, it’s time to check out the AutoScooper 12 from PetPivot. Your cats deserve it, and so do you. And at this price, an automatic litter box isn’t just wishful thinking; it belongs on next week’s shopping list.

Conclusion
Every cat should have access to a clean litter box, and one of the most important parts of being a responsible cat parent is making sure that happens. It’s also one of the most tedious parts, which is why we’re all very grateful to an engineer named Brad Baxter, inventor of the automatic litter box. For most of us, however, these technological wonders have long been seen as luxury items that only the super-rich could afford.
The compact & stylish AutoScooper 12 proves that those days are well and truly over.
This self-cleaning litter box from PetPivot is quiet, easy to use, and is more than a match for units that cost five or six times its price. So unless you love the daily drudgery of scooping out the litter box, go out and treat yourself to an AutoScooper 12 – you won’t regret it.
