SoPhresh Cat Litter Review

Review Summary

Our Final Verdict

We give So Phresh Cat Litter a rating of 4.5 out of 5 stars.

If you’re looking for an effective cat litter brand at an affordable price, it’s worth taking a look at So Phresh.

The So Phresh brand is owned by Petco Animal Supplies Inc. You can find it for sale on Amazon, as well as on the Petco website and in its stores.

While So Phresh offers traditional clay-based cat litters, its range of alternative, paper, and silica gel litters get the most positive reviews. These are more environmentally friendly than clay-based litters and are lightweight and cost-effective. Who Makes So Phresh & Where Is It Produced?

The So Phresh brand is owned by Petco Animal Supplies Inc., which is one of the biggest and best-known pet retailers in the U.S.A. It has over 1,500 shops across the country — you’ve probably been in one! Besides at its physical shops and website, you can buy So Phresh cat litter on Amazon.

Which Types of Cats Is So Phresh Best Suited For?

The So Phresh brand makes a variety of cat litters, including:

    • Paper-pelleted cat litter
    • Clay-based cat litter
    • Crystal cat litter

These will suit almost any type of cat! Most cats seem to get along well with So Phresh litters. They’re good choices for cats with dust allergies, as the paper and crystal litters are low- to no-dust formulas.

Which Types of Cats Might Do Better With a Different Brand?

If your cats do prefer clay-based litters, you may prefer to choose another brand.

    Paper Litter Is Environmentally Friendly

As more and more cat owners become aware of the environmental issues with clay-based cat litter, they look for alternatives that are just as efficient but more environmentally friendly. Clay cat litter is made from bentonite, which has to be removed from the earth using a method called strip mining. This creates a great deal of waste and destroys habitats in the immediate area. Clay cat litter isn’t biodegradable either, so when you dispose of it, it’s adding to landfills.

Cat litters made from materials like wood pulp are viable alternatives. Besides using recycled material, they’re biodegradable. They can be added to your compost heap or will break down in a landfill. Many paper-pelted cat litters perform just as well as traditional clay litters, so many cat owners are switching to these options.

Crystal Litter Is a Good Choice for Cats With Allergies

So Phresh crystal cat litters are great for cats with dust allergies. They also create less waste than clay-based cat litters, and you should find that you’ll use around 1/10 of the quantity compared to a regular litter. They’re also lighter, so moving the bag of litter around your house is much easier.

The Clay Litters Do Not Get Good Reviews

So Phresh does offer a clay-based cat litter, but its reviews suggest that it’s not as high performing as some other brands out there. Besides coming in a large plastic tub that some owners find difficult to open, it doesn’t seem to control odors that well and is quite high in dust. That may trigger allergies in some cats, and it can be tracked around the house.

Reviews of the 3 Best So Phresh Cat Litter Options

Let’s take a look at three of the best So Phresh cat litter choices.

    1. So Phresh Odor Control Paper Pellet Cat Litter

So Phresh Odor Control Paper Pellet Cat Litter

While many more environmentally friendly litter options are more expensive, the So Phresh paper pellet cat litter is budget-friendly and efficient. It’s made from 95% recycled paper, which is blended with odor-controlling ingredients designed to neutralize those ammonia odors that can make cat litter trays so stinky. This litter is biodegradable, so you won’t need to worry about it being sent to a landfill.

Since the pellets are much larger than average, you might need to invest in a new litter scoop, as clean pellets won’t fall through the holes of a regular scoop. It can be a bit tricky to tell the difference between clean and dirty litter because the color doesn’t change significantly. Over time, though, this gets easier to figure out! This litter doesn’t clump but still works with litter box systems like Tidy Cats Breeze.

    Pros
    • Affordable
    • Little to no tracking
    • Low dust
    • Good at controlling odors
    Cons
    • Pellets are large
    • Doesn’t work with a regular litter scoop

    2. So Phresh Odor-Lock Crystal Cat Litter

So Phresh Odor-Lock Crystal Cat Litter

Crystal cat litters are becoming increasingly popular due to their high absorbency and the fact that they’re suitable for most automatic litter trays. These crystals are made from non-toxic silica gel and are highly absorbent. A little of this litter goes a long way, and compared to the equivalent regular and scoopable litters, you need just 4 pounds of this compared to 28 pounds of scoopable litter or 40 pounds of regular litter.

The manufacturer states that this litter tackles odors for up to 1 month, but in our multi-cat household, we’d say that this is closer to 7 days. One thing to note is that the crystals do make quite a loud crackling noise as your cat urinates and the litter absorbs the moisture. Most cats don’t seem to mind, but some might be a little startled!

    Pros
    • Dust-free
    • Lightweight
    • Long-lasting
    Cons
    • Expensive
    • Non-clumping

    3. So Phresh Scoopable Odor-Lock Clumping Micro Crystal Cat Litter in Pink Silica

So Phresh Scoopable Odor-Lock Clumping Micro Crystal Cat Litter

While most crystal cat litters don’t clump, this one does! This is a great option if you’re looking for a more environmentally friendly and dust-free option for a clay-based cat litter. This lightweight litter is made from fine silica gel crystals that effectively absorb both odors and liquid. The clumps are extremely easy to scoop.

The small crystals collectively have a similar size and texture to clay litter. The bonus is that they’re almost completely fragrance-free, but they do track in a similar way to clay litters. As they dry, the clumps can end up falling apart as you try to pick them up. You can get around this by making sure to scoop your cat’s litter tray regularly or simply stirring the broken clumps back into the litter and changing the entire tray more often.

    Pros
    • Lightweight
    • Good odor absorption
    • Fragrance-free
    • Dust-free
    Cons
    • Does track a little
    • Clumps can break up

    What Other Users Are Saying

    • All About Cats: “Offering a variety of traditional clay litters and alternative cat litters, So Phresh is known for excellent odor control and for being a more affordable option in alternative litter.”
    • Amazon: As Cat owners, we always double-check with Amazon reviews from buyers before we buy something. You can read these by clicking here.

    Conclusion

So Phresh is an excellent choice if you’re looking for a crystal or paper pellet cat litter that combines effective odor control with an easy-to-use and lightweight formula. These options all get solid reviews from users. But if you’re looking for a clay-based cat litter, the So Phresh version doesn’t perform as well as many other options out there.

The advantage of So Phresh is that if you happen to run out, this brand is owned and distributed by Petco, so you can simply go to your local store to resupply! As our cats are creatures of habit, sometimes this is an important consideration!

      1. Suzanne Reiter reviews indicate that their clay cat litter may not be as high-performing as other brands. Its drawbacks include coming in a large, hard-to-open plastic tub, poor odor control, and high dust content, which can trigger allergies in some cats and be tracked throughout the house.
