Are Hemp Cat Collars Safe? Facts, Benefits, & FAQ

putting a collar on a cat

Of all the necessities we provide our cats, protection is one of the biggest. Placing a collar on your cat is one way to make life easier with felines. A collar can help identify your cat if they’re lost or, in some cases, help you hear your kitty when they are hiding from you. Of all the cat collars on the market, it’s difficult to choose which one is right. For many owners, when the search begins, an important question arises: Are hemp cat collars safe for cats? The answer is yes, hemp cat collars are quite safe for cats.

Let’s learn a bit more about hemp cat collars, if they are safe, and whether they are the right choice for you and your kitty.

What Is Hemp?

When mentioning products made with hemp, a lot of people naturally think of marijuana. Hemp is derived from the Cannabis sativa plant and is used commercially in the United States for lots of products. Hemp is often confused with marijuana because they are technically the same species. The difference comes into play not with the science of the matter, but with the legalities of it all.

In terms of what is legal, the difference between the two is determined by the plant’s tetrahydrocannabinol, or THC, content. THC is a chemical found in cannabis plants and is the one that is associated with “getting high.” For a plant to be classified as hemp, it must have 0.03% or less THC content when the plant is dried.

With all the legalities out of the way, the uses for hemp are quite easy to notice. As a plant, hemp naturally grows faster than trees. It’s also faster than many other crops we use to make products. Textiles, paper, clothes, plastic, different food products, and even animal feed can all be made using hemp. Another great product out there made with this versatile plant is cat collars.

While hemp has been used for years to make rope, canvas, sails, and webbing fiber, when it comes to making pet collars, for cats and dogs, it is hard to deny the natural benefits hemp provides. Let’s take a look.

1. Hemp Is Eco-Friendly

There are several reasons hemp is considered eco-friendly. One of the most notable is that hemp doesn’t require a lot of water during its growing cycle. Another is that it has natural protection against pests, allowing it to be grown without the use of harmful pesticides or chemicals. You’ll also love that hemp is 100% biodegradable.

2. Hemp Is Durable

Hemp is quite durable. We already mentioned how rope, sails, and canvas have been made from hemp for years. This was due to the strength of this material. Hemp fibers are naturally stronger than cotton, which makes them ideal for making products we need to be durable and strong, like cat collars.

3. Hemp Is Hypoallergenic and Antibacterial

Unfortunately, many cats out there have allergies. One of the biggest benefits these cats will see from the use of hemp collars is that hemp is naturally hypoallergenic. There is also no bleach or dyes used during the processing of hemp. This makes it a wise choice for cats that struggle with other materials in their collars. Hemp is also antibacterial, as cannabinoids and other natural chemicals in the plant can inhibit the growth of certain bacteria.

4. Hemp Has Natural Resistance

No one wants their kitty’s collar to get smelly or, even worse, moldy. Collars made of hemp are less likely to deal with these issues, as hemp itself is odor-resistant. It is also resistant to mold and mildew. Hemp fibers can absorb moisture while still allowing it to evaporate, preventing the damp, stagnant environment where mold and mildew thrive.

With all the benefits listed above, you may still be wondering if hemp is considered safe for cats. The answer to that question is a resounding yes. You’ll even find that many wellness products are available for kitties that are made from hemp products. The most notable of these products is hemp seed oil. This oil can be used for many reasons and comes in sprays or in droppers to be added to your cat’s food, although you should always get approval from a vet before using any.

If you need to speak with a vet but can't get to one, head over to PangoVet. It's an online service where you can talk to a vet online and get the advice you need for your pet — all at an affordable price!

Here are a few of the most common uses of hemp oil to show just how safe hemp truly is for your kitty:

  • Can help with aching joints or other issues
  • May boost a cat’s appetite
  • Helps aging cats with mobility issues
  • May improve a cat’s mood
  • Boosts your cat’s sleep naturally
  • Is great for a cat’s skin and coat

Things to Keep in Mind When Choosing a Hemp Cat Collar

While hemp may be a safe material for your cat, there are still important things to keep in mind when you decide to put a collar on your cat. Unfortunately, not all collars are made the same, and some can present hazards pet owners often overlook.

Keep these things in mind when choosing a cat collar, no matter what material it is made from:
  • You should be able to fit one or two fingers between your cat’s collar and their neck. A collar that is too tight can cause choking.
  • Breakaway collars are the best option, as cats can get into small spaces and can become trapped by their collar’s latch. Certain predators also go after cats by grabbing at their necks. For cats that venture outside, breakaway collars provide cats an extra chance to escape in these situations.
  • Placing identification, such as tags or microchips, on your cat’s collar can help you find your cat in the event they get outside or wander too far away from home.
  • Kittens should not be fitted for collars since they are still growing. It is best to wait until they mature and then buy a collar that fits them properly.

Final Thoughts

If you’ve been curious as to whether hemp cat collars are an option, rest assured, they are. Not only are these collars made from a durable material, but they are considered a safe option for cats. When your feline friend is ready for a new collar or if you’re preparing for their first one, hemp is a great option. As always, keep the collar fit and identification in mind when you make your purchase. Then your cat can show off their new collar while you take pride in making such a good choice.
