Coloration: Blue
Likes: She loves to be petted, brushed or combed: she looks up adoringly, even if I'm combing thru mats. When she's in the mood, she loves belly rubs: she rolls over and invites us to rub her belly. She loves taking her morning "bath" in the sunny front windows.
Pet-Peeves: No lap available!
Favorite Toy: She LOVES a purple and blue feather fishing lure, on a wand. It was a gift from Louis and Ethan to Scooter for her 20th birthday, but Scooter didn't get to play with it much, so Lola is making sure it's well-loved and appreciated.
Favorite Nap Spot: A lap - any lap!! Is yours available?
Favorite Food: Innova Cat and Kitten (canned)
Skills: Disappearing!
Dwells:
indoors
Arrival Story: It was destined! After the loss of our beloved Scooter on Feb. 5, 2009, we knew we wanted another cat -- ideally, two -- but I was still trying to get past the initial grief. My husband asked when we could get another cat, though, so I started looking online, still not ready to look in person. The cats who fit our 'wish list' were too far away. Eventually, I felt brave enough to look at real live cats, so we went to the Petco and PetSmart adoptions one Saturday. We didn't find the cat for us, but it felt good to hold and pet a cat again. We talked for a while with an ANEW'S ARC volunteer at Petco and I took home a brochure and adoption application. Back home, I looked online again. On Petfinder's list of breeds, I intended to search another breed, but as I scrolled down the page toward it, I clicked on Burmese instead. I'd checked it before and there were no possibilities for us, but this time, there she was: small, senior female, very friendly and social, and she was in our area -- exactly what we were looking for! The same ANEW'S ARC group had her listed. My husband wasn't home to look at her photos, but I immediately went back to Petco. The volunteer called the foster mom and we arranged to meet "Luna" at Petco the next day at noon. Before we met her, I filled out the adoption application, just in case. We met, we loved, we brought her home immediately, on March 15, 2009. Lola (renamed from Luna) is home with us now, to stay! We feel we were destined and perfect for each other: she's the right kitty to help fill some big holes in our hearts as well as find a special place of her own (she already has), and we're committed to giving her the love and care she deserves.
Bio: Lola originally belonged to a breeder here in Albuquerque. When the breeder died in late 2005, Lola and the breeder's other cats were taken to the city shelter and kept there for 3 months while the court decided what to do with them. Lola was estimated to be 10 years old at that time. Released to a rescue group in March 2006, she was spayed and treated for some illnesses, then adopted in May 2006. That person returned her to the rescue group on March 8, 2009, apparently because she was throwing up. When we adopted her on March 15, 2009, she had some obvious health issues but it turns out throwing up isn't one of them. All her teeth were extracted on March 27, 2009 due to severe periodontal disease. Blood tests show she has stage 2 kidney disease, which we hope will improve now that the infection in her mouth is gone. She may have chronic upper respiratory infections, too, but we hope that will also be helped by taking care of her dental problems. Lola's such a sweet, lovable lap cat, very social and friendly -- a real love -- and we feel fortunate and blessed to have her with us.

Coco's the reason I have my new home: Coco's mom told my mom how sweet Burmese cats are. When Mom looked on Petfinder again for a cat to adopt, she didn't intend to look for Burmese. She had checked Burmese before and there were none that were right for her and Dad. On her way to check on some other cats, she saw the Burmese category, and something made her click on it again... and there I was! Thank you, Coco's mom, for planting the thought in her head.
How Mom and Dad became attached to me: When my foster mom took me out of my carrier and put me in my future Dad's arms, I clung to him with everything I had, purring and kneading furiously. No one had trimmed my claws for a long time so they got stuck in his clothes. My future Mom helped pry them out, then she held me. I got stuck in her tee shirt, too. Since we were all "attached" by then, they had to take me home!
A good friend, Freckles, let me know that my photo was used in the Catster Vet Blog. It's a question about heart murmurs, which I do not have, but I do have one of those pretty towel/blankies with a heart and my name on it, made for me by the mommy of another good friend, Sky. That photo is tagged "heart" so that's probably how it was found by Dr. Barchas. Do you suppose Dr Barchas HIMSELF looks for the photos to use on his blog?
Speaking of vets, Mom says I'll be going back to the vet in the morning for more fluids. I had fluids again Friday afternoon, to pump me up for the weekend so I wouldn't have to go to emergency. The fluids helped me feel better. Today I was dipping my paw in my water bowl again, though, and Mom doesn't think it's because of my congestion. My fur is kind of "ruffled" and I'm feeling more tired, along with playing in my water, so Mom thinks I'm getting dehydrated and some fluids should help.
I think I'm making some progress and my congestion is getting better, but it's slow.
No, Lola. It'sSALINE, not SAILING. The vet put saline in your nose today.
Is that what she did? Someone covered my eyes and I couldn't see!
Yep, I went to the vet again today. The nice lady that likes to hug me put me on the scale. I was exactly the same as last time. I didn't gain weight yet, but I think I can!
Then the vet checked me over and showed Mom how to use the baby saline drops to flush out my nose. She said just do one nostril at a time so you don't get backwash (or something like that). She also said people get dependent on nose drops because they put it in both nostrils at once.
She put her hand on my head like she was going to give me a pill -- like in these photos -- only she covered my eyes with her hand, too, so I couldn't see the drop coming. Then she pointed my nose straight up and put one drop of the baby saline solution into one nostril. She held my head straight up for a few seconds, until it had time to run into my sinus. She said sometimes a cat will sneeze and blow some out, but that's okay. I was a very good girl and stayed very still the whole time. She said Mom should do the other nostril later in the day.
She wants me to continue the Doxycycline for an additional 7 days, but I can stop the icky Clindamycin after the first 7 days.
Then the vet gave me sub-Q fluids again and I was done. On the way home, I rode up high again so I could see out. A young guy in the car next to us at a light was smiling at me. I bet he knows I'm a good girl!
Both Mom and Dad said I look and act much better tonight, probably because of the fluids. Mom said my fur finally looks smooth again. Mom's supposed to email the vet early tomorrow to let her know how I'm doing, so she can decide if I need anything else tomorrow -- since the weekend is coming again.
Mom didn't do quite as well putting the saline in my other nostril this evening as the vet did.
And speaking of saline . . . Dad got some Popeye's chicken today. I didn't want any, though. I only have a nose for tuna right now. I didn't want Popeye's last week, either, when I couldn't smell anything at all, but maybe next week!
I just got started sending thank you's from 2 weeks ago. I'm way behind but . . .
being Lola means I think I can catch up!
