Today is my birthday! I am 16 today. Sweet! Well, Mom is not really sure how old I am or when my birthday really is, so today is my assigned day. When Mom got me from the library they were not sure how old I was. Some said I was three, some said four or five. Mom knows I was not kitten-like when she brought me to live here. I never really liked to play, except to chase the laser light and to have my catnip fix. I have always loved to just sit and snuggle, get brushed and have treats. I love the simple things.

We are grateful that I am still here to have another birthday. We enjoy and appreciate each day. I still love my brushes and quiet time with Mom. I can go through a bag of treats in less than a weeks time. Doc says it is okay, really!

Thank you for all your purrs and well wishes and love through the year, I know they partly the reason I am still around...the miracle and power of the paw is a beautiful thing.

Thank you for my birthday presents. I see that there is a lovely cake from Sleeper and Samhain and Fearless and the Ferals and I am sure Owl played a part in that too. Thank you! Please have some cake, it is delicious!

I am also glad to see that my brother Rusty is home. He didn't come up to see me yet, but I cam down the steps part way and meowed a greeting to him when he came home. He looked my way and winked. He is a pretty good little brother!

Love, Mrs M

Yes...Who needs an alarm clock when you have a cat. Might as well throw them away in this house! Even though it was Sunday, there was to be no sleeping in. Even though last night Mom went out to hear a local band and got in way past bedtime. Even though I went to bed at the same time she did I still was awake at my usual time. And when no one came to let me out for my morning stroll down the hall and to bring my breakfast, I got a little loud. First one test meow, no answer. A little louder with two meows, still no answer. I got a drink and went and stood by my door and let out a roar that my lion ancestors would have been proud of! That did it! Mom came stumbling down the hallway and we got on with our day. Coffee was put on, breakfast served and life as usual. For what it is worth, I did let her catch a nap this afternoon! Do you guys wake your families up?

That was title of the book Mom just finished reading. It takes places in rural England and stars a smart little cat named Toby Jug. The book chronicles his first year after his dramatic rescue when he was only 3 weeks old. He was quite an adventersome young kit, very handsome and personable too. He forms an incrdeible bond with his human, Denis and together they take strolls, go on a camping trip and other small forays too. Toby Jug is smart, brave, and very endearing.

Of course, the story ends on a sad note, but most of our stories do too. But as in our lives, that shouldn't be the part that sticks with you. It is the life in-between that should be remembered. Well-lived and Well-loved.

From an old lady who lives and loves well....
Hugs and purrs,

Mom and I read a really cool book over the holidays. It was called "Rabid" by Bill Wasik and Monica Murphy. It may sound like a horror book and at times it was very horrifying, but it was actually all about the the history of rabies. The book also tied rabies in to literature, from the greek myths to a zombie apocalypse and even vampires and werewolves too. See how those blood-sucking creatures fit the theme?

It talked about how early medicine tried to understand the cause of the virus and then how modern science is using what it has learned to investigate treatments for other illness that cross the blood/brain barrier.

It was not an overly scientific read and the medical things were actually very easy to understand. The ties to literature and even popular culture were alot of fun. We even learned where the expression "hair of the dog that bit you" originated! Perfect for New Year's morning! MOL!

The book even proposed that a number of famous people, including Edgar Allen Poe may have died due to rabies. The final chapters talked about some present day outbreaks including the island of Bali and even Central Park in New York City.

A fascinating read and a very good reminder to always stay up to date with your vaccinations (for animals and for humans) if situations warrant that. Raccoons and bats are our most prevalent carriers of the disease now.

On a side note, Mom listened to the radio alot over the holidays, and she often heard a commercial from our emergency vet which warned dog owners about the dangers of canine parvo virus. It seems we had a very bad outbreak last summer in our area.

Stay safe! Till next time lots of love and hugs from me,
Mrs M

I may not show it very often; I am not the most affectionate or exprssive cat in the house, but I do want to say how thankful I am.
I had a pretty big health scare and used up a few of my nine lives; and there is nothing like a crisis to make you appreciate what you have.

I sometimes purr and sometimes give mom nudges with my head. I sometimes flop over and lay on her shoes. We chat in the morning when she is the shower.

I don't say it, but I truly am thankful for the life I have lived. Long ago, I lived with the old lady who loved opera music. She was such a fine, proper lady. She taught me to appreciate the arts, music and good crystal.

When she passed on, I moved to the library. I learned to appreciate words and silence tempered with children's excitement and laughter. The library was a wonderful place. I am thankful that I had the chance to brush against so many legs and make so many children smile. Adults who were lonely, brushed my fur and spoke a few kind words to me. Youngsters practiced reading to me; I was never a harsh critic.

When my time came to retire from the library, I came here. I am thankful that Rusty learned that I meant no harm, intruding on his space. I am thankful that they take such good care of me, I know I am getting older and they are so patient with me. I grumble, but I know in my heart that trips to the vet are necessary. I growl, yet I know my nails have to be clipped. I appreciate that they buy me Fancy Feast and my new crunchy food that is $22 a bag.

I am thankful for all my wonderful friends here and for the friendships Mom has made too. The love and support and care and prayers and purrs mean so much to us. We are truly thankful.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Love, Mrs M

I may be old, but let me tell you, I still have a few tricks up my sleeve.
I did a good one tonight, Mom laughed out loud!

It was supper time, Mom brought me my dish and put it in my room. I took a few licks and then went back to my cozy bed. A little while later, Mom came up, opened my door and asked if I wanted to take a stroll. Sometimes I walk the hallway and then take a nap on the bathroom carpets (they are soft and fuzzy)/ If I don't eat much of my meal, Mom will bring my dish in for me, sometimes I don't like to eat alone. Tonight Mom brought my dish in and I was eating with gusto. Skittles and Skylar were watching me eat. Our cat family is pretty respectful and won't bump me from my dish. Skittles waited to go and inspect my supper till I walked away. I was only taking a break, I planned to go back and finish my supper after a little nap.... So there was Skit with her nose inching closer to my bowl, so I laid down and rested my tail across my bowl. Skittles was puzzled! The look on her face was priceless! How could she possibly get something out of that dish with my tail in the way? It was perfect!

I got up about 5 minutes later, nibbled a little more and then walked away. I did save some for Skittles. I like her, she has always been patient with me. When she was little, she liked to come for sleepovers in my room/ I'll share with her, but only when I am truly done eating. MOL

I went to the Vet on Monday night and that young doctor had the nerve to call me an old lady! It was said sweetly, but still, that wasn't nice. She should show some respect to her elders. MOL!

My visit went pretty well. The doctor thought that I looked good and that my weight was good too. She is concerned though, because I have been on a steroid since last year. She is worried that I could become diabetic from taking it. She gave me my exam and felt around my belly. She could not feel the mass that she felt last year. She asked if she could give me an x-ray to compare with ones she took last year. We did this and she does not see any of what was on there last time. She is not sure what really happened to me. There was a mass and now it is gone. Because Mom chose to not do anything invasive to me, we may not know what it was. The doctor wonders if it could be something like IBS.

She wants to wean me off my steroids and change my diet and see what happens. She gave us a few cans of Hills Science Diet ID. I liked it on Monday night, but then would not eat it after that. I have a little bit of an upper respiratory thing going on too ( Mom says I have the snuffles) so food doesn't really smell that appealing right now) Mom is giving me the tuna and has started to taper off my steroid doses.

If you can spare a few purrs for me, I would appreciate it. Since I may not like this Hills stuff, what else do you guys recommend? I sure will miss my Fancy Feast!

Oh, here is the other kicker. The doctor was looking at my eyes and they were very dilated. She took me in the back for an eye exam and wanted to take my blood pressure too. She said that high pressure can cause the eyes to dilate like that. She wants to see me next week with Rusty just to check my blood pressure. Mom is very mad, not at this doctor, but the one we had two years ago. Our favorite vets retired and a new doctor bought their practice. When I was there with the new doctor, Mom asked about my eyes and the doctor just kind of blew it off and said, "She is old, probably has cataracts" Mom had to pressure him to even get him to turn out the light and exam her eyes. Mom was pissed and that was the last time we went to him. He had hired two other doctors and we always request the one we have now. She is nicer, more thorough, and although not quite as experienced, but we believe, more knowledgeable. If I do indeed have high blood pressure, it could have been caught over two years ago! mom is kicking herself for not making a bigger deal of it at the time, but she trusted what the doctor said. Grrrrrrr.

Much love from "The Old Lady",

Hi Everybody! I gave Mom a scare this week. She was really worried about me, she even called the vet. I was sick on Monday and threw up a few times. There was a hairball mixed in with it, so Mom wasn't sure if that is what was bothering me. I didn't really have an appetite and was just not myself.

When Mom got up, she told herself that she would call the doctor at 9 when they open and that maybe I was trying to tell her that I was ready to make journey. Well I fooled Mom!

I ate all my breakfast! And kept it down. Mom called the doctor anyway and they said, "since she is eating, just keep an eye on her". Thursday night, Mom made me chicken. I love chicken! I ate pretty well, not like usual, but much better than earlier in the week. I did good on Friday and this morning at 5:30AM I was yelling that I wanted to have my breakfast! I cleaned my dish.

Mom was really worried about me, but she feels a little less nervous now. She knows that my time is limited, by how much we are not sure, and that every day has been a gift since I was so sick in the fall. She is also worried be cause she will be going on vacation soon and she doesn't want anything to happen to me while she is gone. Aunt Anita will be coming, so I will be in good hands. Aunt Anita told Mom, that I am her favorite cat in the house! (Not even Rusty, who lays on her in the recliner when they watch movies!) Take that Rusty, I am her favorite! So there!

If you can spare a few purrs, I would appreciate it. Not big time, major purrs, just a few little ones. Thanks.

Love, Mrs M

I can't believe it! Mom forgot about me. No, she didn't leave me in the car or forget to pick me up somewhere. She forgot about me in my own home.

Here's the story. I have my own room. My beds are there. My nip toys are there. My food, my water and my box are all there. But, I do like to "stroll the deck" as Mom likes to say. I patrol the upstairs hallway and sometimes come down the first few steps to see what is going on downstairs. Mom doesn't like to leave me out too long, because I only really like to use my own litterbox. I am only allowed out in the hallway when Mom is upstairs or within earshot of me, because I will meow to go back in my room.

Tonight, Mom gave me supper in my room and a came back a little later to clean boxes. She let me out in the hallway and continued on to do the other boxes. She then went down to eat her supper. After supper she went over to the bowling alley to practice and then went to cat-sit Silly. Ooops! What did she forget?

Me! She came home to find me sitting on the stairs. Tapping my paw and giving her a lecture. She came right up, opened my door, and I stood right in the doorway and continued my tirade. She won't forget me anytime soon.

Mom's note. We were gone about three hours, much longer than I would usually leave her out. She was fine. No accidents. Rusty sometimes bullied her in the past, but since she has been sick he has been very sweet to her. With the heat, I think everyone was sacked out after supper and didn't even care that she was there.

Mom said that if "pill spitting" was an Olympic sport, then I would be going to the Summer Games. I told Mom not to call it "spitting". I am to refined and ladylike to spit. I launch the pills! Last night I was up in the hallway getting my pill and on the second attempt, launched one downstairs that landed on the piano. How 'bout that? It had distance and precision! Any competition from you other pill takers (and non-takers...mol!) ?

I'm doing okay otherwise. I am eating and drinking okay and liking fresh catnip. I demanded attention this evening. I needed my beautician to give me a good brushing and massage. I now look and feel wonderful. Percy even came over later and gave me a "tail hug", wrapping his tail over my back. He is goofy, yet lovable.

Hello Everyone! Mom says I used up another of my 9 lives. I eventually caught the URI that everyone in the house had. She tried so hard for me not to get it. She washed her hands every time she came in my room. She washed my bowls, my fork, the litter box scoop. You name it, everything was sanitized. But, the germs were in the air and I managed to catch myself a cold. (See Mom, I still can catch things, mol!)

I was all stuffy and didn't want to eat. The nice doctor told mom to stop my steroid medicine for a few days, but that helps me eat. (A nasty side effect of steroids is that it weakens your immune system and leaves the door open for infections to set in) So Mom gave me an appetite stimulant and that got me eating again. It didn't hurt that she was also making me "fish soup" (tuna from a can with extra water in it) and "chicken soup" (sorry Tabbies, but I had a cold). By Saturday night I was ready to have some Ham. We all love our ham in this house!

I still sound a little like Darth Vader, so I still get my steam bath in the morning when Mom gets a shower. Mom checked with the doctor, and it is okay to start me back on my meds. I may have used up another of my nine lives, but that's okay. I have a few more in storage and I'll use them as needed.

PS I want to thank all of you for the Eggs and the wonderful Spring and Easter wishes. Mom said her inbox was eggsploding this weekend MOL! We just have the most awesome friends here!
Special thanks to my best friend Spooky for the rabbit (I love to stalk him) and the beautiful daffodils. Your encouragement and energy truly keep me going.

Hi Everyone and Happy Spring! We have been having the most beautiful weather, so unlike any March that Mom can ever remember. Mom even cooked out on the grill on Saturday night and we all got to eat some grilled salmon. It was yummy.

Today was made even brighter and sunnier, because I was named a Dream Girl # 22. I am so honored. We had a treat party to celebrate, and I shared with everybody, even little Daisy. We had a good time.

It also made the day a little brighter, because we have been sad lately. So many kitties that are not feeling well or have gone to the bridge. It takes its toll on you. I guess Mom is even more sensitive to it lately because I have been sick. My health has been stable. Mom has been giving me my Cerenia every other day and that is working out just fine. I hate the taste of it....yuck!

Well it is almost time for my early midnight snack. Mom finds that if she gives me a little snack at night, I tend to not wake her as early in the morning. Win-Win situation!

I have been feeling pretty good lately. Good enough, in fact, to catch up on a little reading. The latest thing I found was a book called "The Cat Selector: How to Choose the Right Cat for You".

Mom always says "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" So I promised Mom I would say something nice.

The book has really nice photos! (There I said it!)

Now for my list of complaints.....Good thing I don't have high blood pressure along with my other problems because this book made my blood boil!

First of all.... Right in the title "How to Choose the Right Cat for You". Does this author know nothing about cats? Doesn't he know, we select our humans! How many humans have gone to a shelter and had a cat pick them out with a paw through a cage, a headbonk, wrapping around your legs, the look, the purr. You know the way we do it! Or how many humans have gone outside to see a random cat appear, either in the yard, on the porch. Doesn't this man get it.....we chose to find that human!

Secondly....and my biggest problem of all. The book takes each breed and tells you about it's personality, health issues, grooming needs, etc. Well, there were several breeds, like Maine Coon, where the book actually advised that these cats should be kept outdoors due to their activity level.

Okay....I know that people have indoor/outdoor cats. Some where it is safe to do so and some who do it where it is a little more risky. I respect that. But to discount a whole breed because they are active! Hellooo.... I know plenty of Maine Coons from here that are indoor cats and are just fine and well adjusted.

How about including a chapter on Active Breeds and giving advice on play and provide stimulation. Talk about cat trees and tunnels and toys and games. Mom calls are house "kitten kindergarten" because there are always so many toys laying round. We almost always get playtime at night before bed. The laser comes out, Roni plays ball with Mom, the mice get tossed around, the feather toys fly, the hallway becomes the racetrack.
How about some human accountability. If you choose these breeds, prepare to be actively engaged with them. How about warning folks to cat proof their house. We know plenty of smart cats that can open doors, toaster ovens (Toki!), our Skylar can almost flush the toilet! (with a little more strength he would have it)

Wow...I didn't mean to rant this long. And really, I know I am preaching to the choir. You're here, you already know what to do!

I just realized that I had not written a diary entry in quite some time. I certainly have been a bit remiss in my duties lately. Truth is, I have been busy imparting all my knowledge to the younger members of this household. They are no longer kittens, even though they sometimes still act like it. I have been sharing stories with them and giving them bits of grandmotherly advice.

My health has been holding steady since I last wrote. I enjoyed Thanksgiving and got my paws on some of the delicious Turkey. I am eating and drinking and mooching treats. I'll also let you in on a little secret, but you have to promise not to tell the Skylar and the others. Mom bought them some catnip toys from River and Simone for Christmas. They catnip is so powerful that Mom has to hide the package from them so that they don't open it till Christmas. She is hiding it in my room and I was very interested! Mom let me have the Christmas mouse to play with. I love it! They can have whatever else is in that package, but that mouse is mine! I even played with the papers that came in the package.

One more thing to tell you. Last night Angel Buddie stopped by for a visit. He brought Heavenly Healing Ice Cream and read me a bedtime story. Between the nip, the ice cream and the story, I had the best night's sleep in ages. I had such sweet dreams and woke up today feeling very refreshed. Thank you Angel Buddy for such a heavenly treat. And thank you to all my friends for your purrs, paws, prayers and well wishes. They have helped me tremendously.

Hi Everybody,

I just wanted to stop in quick and thank you all for your purrs and support. It has helped me tremendously!

I also wanted to let you know that, for now, I'm doing ok. Mom talked to my doctor on Monday night and she changed one of my medications. The doctor didn't want me to have an appetite stimulant till she was sure that I could keep things down. I am now eating and drinking in small amounts, several small meals a day. I am still going for my strolls down the hallway, a few times a day. The doctor wants Mom to stay in touch and call every 2-3 days to let her know how I am doing. Even though that doctor made me hiss, she is alright in my book!
Get it? My Book? Library joke! From the Library Cat!

Mom's note: Mrs. Murphy seems to be holding her own. We aren't quite sure what to expect. But for now, we are thankful for each day that we have together. She seems content, not agitated, she has a bit of an appetite. Her eyes are bright, she still talks to me. She is up and around strolling her hallway. She made a decent size poop tonight.

Your purrs, prayers, and kind words mean so much to us. Thank you for being such great friends

It is with a heavy heart that I will share this news with you. I had another x-ray and an ultrasound when I was at the Vet yesterday. The ultrasound confirmed what the vet suspected, but hoped was not true. There is a mass around my stomach/upper intestinal area which is causing all my symptoms. It is rather larger and complicated looking. It seems rather aggressive because I was not showing any symptoms when I had my exam and shots in September. The vet said that surgery could be an option but she does not believe my chances would be very good. Mom trusts her judgement.

Their plan for now is to keep me comfortable. Mom and the doctor both promised I would not have pain or suffering. I am taking a pill for nausea and a pain medication. I am still drinking water, getting up to stroll around a bit and enjoying time with Mom. I had about three licks of soft food for supper tonight.

I continue to be moved by your caring, compassion, and purrs. Please keep your purrs coming that my remaining time is peaceful.

Purrs,

Mrs. Murphy

Mom came to get me at 5 and I was very happy to see her. I said "Get me out of this place! I don't like it here." But I guess I will be going back again tomorrow because they left the IV port in my front leg. They want to check me again tomorrow and see if I still need more fluids. They didn't do the x-ray today, so they will do that tomorrow too. The bandage is annoying me although I am not trying to remove it. I am being a pretty good girl. Mom is disappointed because I am still not eating. She tried Fancy Feast and cooked chicken (sorry Tabbies, but it is one of my favorites, please don't stop purring for me cuz I like chicken!)
I did pee and poop since I am home, so we will take that as a good sign.

The morning started out like any other. Mom's alarm went off, she stumbled down the hallway to the bathroom. On her way, she cracked open my door, stuck her head in, said Good Morning and asked if I would care to take a stroll around the deck. (That means, I go out and walk the hallway and get a drink from the water bowl by the bathroom. It has the same water in it that my bowl has, but you know...the grass is always green! )

Mom brought me breakfast, Fancy Feast, and I wanted nothing to do with it! I took my pill but would not eat or drink. Mom went for her shower, she came in and scooped my box, and then she left. Little did I know, but she would return yet again, this time with my carrier! And there we were..going for that car ride...AGAIN!

I didn't know this, but last night the doctor told Mom that she should drop me off in the morning and I would be staying with them for the day. They want to repeat my x-ray again, put me on an IV and figure out what is going on.

I am usually very ladylike, so this might be difficult to tell you....but here goes.....If I could only fart I would feel so much better!

There I said it! I should take a lesson from that beast Ivan who lives here and leaves audible ones rip right out. What a savage!

The doctor took another x-ray and my gas pockets are moving along but they are not gone yet. She is giving me meds for my stomach and keeping me on the antibiotic because she believes I may have an infection that caused the gas.

Mom is making me get a little more exercise to help things move along. She has carried me downstairs several times today so that I would climb those steps back to my room. I really don't move around that much, so that could be part of the problem.

I thank you all for your purrs, they are helping me tremendously. Mom is less nervous too. Thank you my friends.... You are wonderful and I am blessed to have you in my life!

I can use a few purrs if you could, please. I was sick all day yesterday throwing up and just not feeling well. I even had an accident, something I never do. If I miss the box, it is usually quite intentional! Mom was worried about me all night and hardly slept because she knew I was just not myself.

Up until Saturday afternoon I had been eating well, drinking my usual amount of water, and having a good solid BM every day.
This came on so suddenly. The only strange thing I had been doing was an odd random "meow" for no apparent reason. I would let out this big meow, Mom would come check in on me to see what was the matter and I would look at her like "what, why are you here?" It was very random times of the day and night and it was not continuous. Mom chocked it up to my age and bad eyesight.

Mom got me an appointment at the Vet tonight. They took my temperature, did blood work and an x-ray. They said I have two large gas pockets which are causing me discomfort, but they are not sure why I have them. I am going back for another x-ray tomorrow for a comparison and may need to have further tests. They are not sure if there is some sort of infection, if I have a blockage, or if perhaps I have developed a tumor.

They gave me a shot for pain and started me on an antibiotic because my temp was a bit low. They also gave me anti-nausea medicine and the Dr hopes I will start eating again, maybe even tonight. They also gave me Sub-Q fluids.

I was a very brave girl and Mom was very proud of me. I only cried out once when the doctor was feeling my belly. I was good for all the needles, did notlet out a single hiss or show my fangs!

If you can spare a few purrs, please send some my way. I'll keep you posted when I get the results from tomorrows appointment.

   Thanks,
Hugs and Love,

Skittles and I had our turn at the vet today for our annual exam and shots. This is the first time I have met the new Doctor. He is nice and he pets us and talks to us before he starts poking and prodding. And I think someone stole his thermometer; cause neither of us had to see it, or not see it, as the case may be!

Anyway, I am getting older and he took a good hard look at the teeth I have left and was a little concerned. They are starting to get alot of plaque. He doesn't want to pull teeth, because I don't have many left, plus the risk of being older and going under anesthesia. He told Mom to keep an eye on me and my mouth. (Don't have to tell her; she can be as bad as the doctor, looking in my mouth, my ears, my nose, my litter box!)

Mom, in fact, asked him about my eyes. It seems my pupils are always very dialated. I seem to see okay; but I don't really go very far and anywhere unfamiliar either. I am not a jumper so she has never seen me miss a leap to furniture. He got out his lights and took a look. He seems to think that I am developing cataracts. (Huh, me and grandma are starting to have more and more in common!) He let Mom take a look and see the cloudy film. He said just to keep an eye on me and watch for tearing or discharge and stuff like that.

Other than that, I feel fine. I eat, soft and crunchy food, drink as much water as I always have, use my box and make my daily deposits, I purr, I snarl at the little bouncy ones, I get my brushes, mooch treats, have nip parties....life as a senior isn't too bad except for all the trips to the doctor (again, kind of like grandma!)

Purrs to all,

As the Queen and Matriarch of this furry family, I have a complaint, or a comment, or a question or, or. oh I don't know! My question is this..."When will they ever learn their names?" The littlest ones, Roni and Maedia, still fo not know there names!

All of us, with the exception of those two little balls of fluff, know and will answer to our names. Even if we don't always come when called, we will at least turn and look at a human when our name is said. Oh boy, not these two!

Maybe they are hearing impaired...no they can hear the refrigerator open from the other end of the house. That's not it!

Maybe they don't like their names. Roni (like Macaroni) was named after her Daddy, a neighborhood Tom named Ron. And Maedia (May-di-a)was named from the Spanish "media" meaning middle, because she was in the middle of the litter and always in the middle of things in the house. I kinda think their names are cute!

Maybe they are called too many nicknames. "Cutie pie", "Sweeties", "Boo". Oh please Mom, get a grip!

In fact, Mom has made an effort to use their real names all the time, no nicknames, for ther last month. Every time she sees them, she will call them by their names. We had a treat party and we all took turns, by name, in taking treats from Mom. And still they are cluless?

They are almost a year old...when will they ever learn?

Today is my 14th birthday and I am very excited! Birthdays in our house are usually pretty fun.
Birthdays mean... extra treats (and I love treats!),
extra attention, hugs, pets, and kisses (I like that too),
a birthday dinner (I have requested chicken, one of my favorites), a catnip party (oooh nip!),
presents (I'm not into toys, maybe more treats?)
the birthday song (I could take it or leave it),
and the traditional ear tug (oh no! 14 + 1 to grow on!) {Mom's note: it is very gentle touch, more of a pet than a pull}
It's nice having such a big furry family, it seems we are having parties almost every other month. So for now, I think I will rest up, catch a cat nap, and be ready to party tonight!

All I have to do is head nudge Mom and purr and she is reaching for the bag. She even taught me tricks so that I at least earn my treats.
I haven't had a chance to do a book review lately; I am sorry if I left you hanging on the edges of your litterboxes waiting. LOL!
Anyway, my latest find is a book called "Twelve by Twelve" and it is about living in a 12x12 cabin in rural North Carolina without running water and electricity. It is also about reducing our carbon footprint (I have tiny feet), race relations, finding peace within ourselves, materialism and more.
I can relate to the 12x12 concept, because I live in a room about that size (with occasional supervised outings too). I do require water and I do use electricity (Mom leaves a nightlight on for me). I am not materialistic. I love organic things .... especailly organic catnip! I have found peace. I love my room!
On a related note, Mom let me have a sleepover the other night. Skittles came to visit me and didn't want to leave. So she stayed all night! We stayed up late, talking lots of girl talk. We had a midnight snack. We talked beauty tips and I did Skittles hair. We fell asleep around 4AM and pretty soon it was time to get up for breakfast. I was kinda tired the next day; but it was worth it! Thanks Skittles, I felt like a young kitty again!

Mommy still feels a little guilty that I stay in the bedroom all by myself; although I really am loving the peace and quiet. So last night she brought the nip party to my room. Ivan, Skittles and Skylar were invited to attend. It wasn't the fresh catnip like we had in the summer, but it was wonderful all the same. Skylar had a little mousie that had been marinating in the jar of nip. He was rolling on the floor with it in his mouth and when he was done chewing it was soaking wet from his slobber. Mom thought it felt really gross but she was laughing. Skittles had the grey puffy and was rubbing her face all over it and Ivan and I were eating the nip pellets. There's nothing like a nip party to brighten the evening.

Okay its not a book review. But I have news and I have to tell you. I GOT MY OWN ROOM! Percy had been teasing me for about two weeks. He never hurt me, but I'm kinda a sissy and he would scare me. So I wouldn't always pee wher I was supposed to even though there are boxes all through the house. It just seemed he was always right there when I needed to go. So Mommy made up the middle room upstairs just for me. It has my favorite bed and blanket. I have my own food, water bowl and litterbox. I do get plenty of company. Skylar, Ivan and Skittles come in to visit with me during the day. Mommy stops in alot because she thinks I might be lonely. But actually I am enjoying the peace and quiet. I certainly don't miss Percy! I know he didn't mean any harm. He doesn't growl or hiss at me...he is just playful, but I am too refined (Mommy says old) for those kind of antics. We'll see what happens... maybe Percy and I can start over someday and maybe get along better. But for now I GOT MY OWN ROOM and I love it!

I found a new book to review. I think I found it by scent. See, my Mommy had this book to the beach and I think I can smell the ocean. Anyways, the book is called "Scent of the Missing" by Susannah Charleson. The subtitle is "Love and Partnership with a Search and Rescue Dog". I, Mrs. Murphy, am not particularly fond of woofies, but I have a new found respect and admiration for them> Mom would love to have a dog, but instead she has all of us, and I think she is quite pleased! Anyways, the book talks about the training of a search and rescue dog and the many ways they are utilized. But it wasn't just that, there was more. It was the story of Susannah and her puppy Puzzle as they bond and learn from each other and undergo the necessary training to do SAR. Even though I am a cat, and we all know that we have this supreme intelligence, good looks and grace; I have to admit these woofies and their humans are pretty amazing. Wow, the things that they can do! My deepest purrs of gratitude to all involved in Search and Rescue, for all they do! Thank You!

Mom had recently finished reading a new book and it ties in to some very sad news we learned yesterday. It is with a heavy heart that we write today's diary entry. Mom had just completed "Homer's Odyssey" by Gwen Cooper. I know it was featured some time ago on Catster, but Mom just got to read it. Homer is a cat who is blind, but who I think sees more of the world than we sometimes do. I think it's because he doesn't let the obstacles of life stand in his way. No height is too high, nothing is hopeless. You can find true love; you can conquer fear and so much more if you don't let the worry slow you down. Believe in yourself and faith. This is a wonderful book in so many ways: a classic cat story, an epic journey filled with humor and scary times yet and most of all great love. Homer, you are truly inspiring! In case you had not heard; Homer's sister Vashti went to the Bridge on Sunday. Gwen, Laurence, Homer and Scarlett, We are truly saddened for your loss. Please find comfort in the many happy memories you share and the true love that abounds in your home. Our purrs are with you,

I found a new book to review. This one is called "Head to Tail Wellness: Western Veterinary Medicine Meets Eastern Wisdom". The book is a really cool combination of elements of eastern principles like chi, sha, and even feng shui working together with traditional medicine and veterinary care. There was a cool quiz which tells you your dominant element (Mine is metal!) There is a basic recipe for making a whole foods meal. Then you can adapt the protein source in the recipe based on which of the five elements you are cooking for. Mom cooked it for Ivan and Percy's birthday. We all thought it was quite delicious. This was a great book that shows that integrated Eastern and Western medicine can truly work well together to give our furry friends the best quality of life. Thanks Mom!

I found a new book yesterday, but I am not sure what it is. I found it in the kitchen near the window. It might be a cookbook, since it is in the kitchen and it has a lot of pictures of the recipes in it. Or it might be a tv guide book because it is near the window and those pictures are of things we can see out that window. The title of the book Mom is reading is "North American Birdfeeder Guide". It has pictures of all kinds of birds and and plants. It has a section of bird profiles that gives their stats but also talks about their nests and what to provide in the backyard to attract them. Looks like a very interesting book. Still not sure, but I'm leaning towards a tv guide.

Having lived in a library, I am very curious about books. I like to watch people read, to snuggle next to someone who is reading, and once in a while actually be read to. I thought I might try a diary and write about whatever books I find in that one room upstairs where the humans have their litterbox! Recently I have seen the book "The Burning Wire" by Jeffrey Deaver. I peeked through it while no one was watching....it looks good. Someone is using the electrical grid in NYC to commit murder. I haven't figured out who it is yet, maybe terrorists or an unhappy employee or a cat set on world domination. Lincoln Rhyme and his usual cast of characters are in this and Lincoln has a health issue. I think Mom will finish this one soon, she seems to really be enjoying it.
