Arrival Story: Emma Goldman was originally adopted by -- and received her fabulous name from -- a friend of ours. When he moved in 2002 and was unable to keep Emma, she passed through several people's hands before finding a permanent spot in our family. Emma is nothing if not resilient.

Bio: And further supporting that claim of resilience: earlier this year we finally brought Emma to the vet to be spayed. Although the only other cat with whom she had regular contact was also female, we felt the procedure was necessary, as Emma was near-constantly in heat and seemed extremely miserable. When Emma underwent the procedure, her surgeon discovered that Emma had two, walnut-sized uterine cysts (the likes of which the vet -- in over a decae of practice -- had never seen): most likely a congenital defect that had been obstructing her intestines, making it painful for her to eat, and explained why, at four years old, she was scarecly larger than a kitten. After the cysts were removed, Emma promptly rocketed to a healthier weight, and has enjoyed near-perfect health ever since.
