Arrival Story:
We were specifically looking for a long-haired, adult lap cat when we found Phedre. She looked like a normal sized cat compared to all the kittens at the shelter, until we got her home and compared her to Feldspar, at which point we realized how small she was. Phedre was a young mother, still nursing a 2-month-old kitten that shared her cage at the shelter, and she suffered from an upper respiratory infection that suppressed her appetite. Our vet informed us that she was dangerously underweight, at just under five pounds, and that her life was in danger from the combined malnutrition and illness. Dave spent a lot of time with Phedre while she was in quarantine in the bathroom, offering different foods to find something that she would eat, medicating her, and trying to comfort her as she drew ragged, uneven breaths. There were several emotional days of carefully checking in on her, afraid of opening the door to find a still body, before she started to recover. Today she's a petite but healthy cat, and she's quite strongly bonded to Dave.

Phedre is a "domestic long hair", but has a number of physical and temperamental features in common with Ragdoll cats- the fluffy neck and "britches", the curious tendency to go limp when picked up, and a voice that emits little squeaks instead of "meows". Because she sleeps approximately 20 hours a day, sometimes in the most improbable positions, we think that the rest of her ancestry may be Beanie Baby. Generally speaking, Phedre is a shy and very docile cat, but we have found two things that transform her into a fearsome huntress: little mousie toys made of animal fur, and styrofoam peanuts.
