Arrival Story:
When I was a freshman in college back in 98-99 I was dating a guy that lived in St. Cloud (another college town 2 hours from my school, 1 from home). In February of ‘99, we found this pathetic looking kitty outside. She looked like she should be white, but was pretty dirty, and had a black streak down her back. She was friendly, obviously starving to death, and very cold. In Minnesota, outside is NOT where you (even with fur) want to be in February. This poor cat weighed less than 5 pounds, and was just a meowing away for someone to save her. We brought her inside, and tried to clean her up. Her little pink nose was blackened from frostbite around the edges, as were the tips of her ears. She wouldn’t even eat the cat food we tried to give her. She did eat the macaroni and cheese though (1st in a LONG line of begging for table scraps). She was the sweetest cat, laid on your lap or chest for hours if you let her, and boy did she purr. It was a college town, and despite our best efforts we never did find an owner. We took her to the vet, and she was fine other than a little malnutrition. It took 3 baths over a few months before we realized the black streak on her back wasn’t fur, it was some grease stain (no doubt trying to get some warmth from someone’s car). Things didn’t work out with that boyfriend, and Sasha was moved home with my parents. She lived at home with my parents for a few years, while I went to college a few hours away. Then, my mom died from her cancer, and my dad decided to move out and my sister bought the house. Sasha, and Shadow had to move out to my uncle’s farm. At the time I was living with my current boyfriend, and his mom (who was terrified of cats). They lived in a chicken coop for 2 months, then Shadow died (age, missed his mom, and he had a bad cyst in his ear long before my mom died). A week later, on Thanksgiving of ’02, we went to visit, and I cried all through dinner. Sasha then got to live in their basement, with the abandoned kitten that had been saved from the cold. I think she was there a year, but it could have been a little longer or a little less. Then they had enough. Then Sasha moved in with my brother’s girlfriend’s sister’s family. Maybe it was her brother. Not entirely sure. She was there several months, but that didn’t work out, because well Sasha is high maintenance. If she doesn’t get sensitive stomach food, occasional hairball medicine, and daily brushing – she’ll throw up. ALL THE TIME. They didn’t like that so much. So I got desperate. I knew if my boyfriend’s mom only just met her she would love her – or at least let her keep us in the basement where we lived. She was a big ol’ creampuff not harmful to anyone. She LOVED people and never hissed or growled – well unless you really really deserved it. So on to the dungeon with us. After much convincing, we got my boyfriends mom to agree to her staying with us. I got my kitty back. FINALLY! … and I was right, she DID enjoy giving her a little pat on the head, and looking at her cute little pink paw pads. Plus Sierra, their yellow lab didn’t bother her, and vice versa. Couldn’t have worked out better, except when she got really sick, and stopped eating, drinking, and pottying a few weeks before we moved. She almost died. Then a week of antibiotics, and an anal expression later she was right as rain. Not that she’ll ever ever forget that horrible butt thing. You should have SEEN the look on her face. How unpleasant I’m sure. Several months after Sasha moved in, we bought our 1st house (March ’05), and she had free roam of it – like a true queen. Around early August I noticed she was getting paler, but didn't think much of it. On Aug. 18, 2006, we left her behind for a weekend vacation. Nothing we haven’t done before. I was a bit worried because I noticed the paleness, and she wasn’t eating or drinking as much. I figured she’d be OK for the weekend. We returned to find she had barely eaten any of the food left out. She got progressively worse throughout the following week, and began hiding in the basement. She didn’t eat unless we hand fed her, drink unless we set the water in front of her, or go to the bathroom unless we set her by the box. Then she stopped doing any of those things. We took her to the vet, and ran blood tests. She was very anemic. We tried steroids and antibiotics, but to no avail. On Tuesday Aug. 29, after I returned from Arthur’s obedience class, I noticed she had labored breathing. We made the decision to take her to the emergency vet, but the poor baby expired 2 minutes after she was put in her carrier. I tried giving her CPR to the best of my ability on the way to the Emergency vet, but it didn’t help. We hit every single stoplight red. I knew she was gone. The worked on reviving her for 10 minutes but my baby had already crossed the rainbow bridge. She was such a wonderful cat, and I will miss her dearly. My mom and her old buddy Shadow were waiting for her on the other side no doubt. Thanks Mom!

She LOVED to rummage through women's purses for feminine products, or depends on old people. Mortifying I know. She'd carry them around the house like a dead mouse. Not much of a live animal hunter, but she'll smell that plastic a mile away.

I miss you still so much! I found those stupid little antlers and that santa hat we purchased for you last year. Sorry. They were SO cute though. I'm so sad I didn't get a photo of it. I told myself I'd do it the next year. I guess you really really never wanted to wear those again. Give Mom a snuggle for me!

Oh my beautiful cat.

Goodbye Dear Sasha

It is my sincere regret to inform you all that my dear friend Sasha lost her battle with anemia last night. We were readying her to go to the ER because she was having trouble breathing, but then she just stopped. I tried mouth to mouth and CPR, but the drive was too far, and she was already gone. They tried reviving her for 10 minutes, and could only get irregular heart rhythms.

I came home sobbing, and my boyfriend took the night off work to comfort me. Arthur tried his best to lick the tears from my face and be a funny puppy to cheer me up, but it only helped a little.

Thanks to all of you for thoughts and prayers. I apologize for not keeping people updated that she was ill in the 1st place. The illness spread quickly, and she was only noticeably sick for about a week and a half. In retrospect, her anemia had probably been getting worse for over a month. I had noticed and commented that she was getting paler. Even when I got her shots back in March before we got Arthur, I said something to the vet, but it was dismissed. It wasn't until she stopped eating that I really knew there was a problem. Hindsite is always 20/20 isn't it?

She was a good cat, and I will miss her more than any pets I have ever lost before.

Our families' heart is broken right now. I took the following day off of work to compose myself, and spent time with Arthur and my boyfriend. A day later and back to work, it has been difficult to stay focused.

Please keep us in your thoughts, because we (especially me) are having a very difficult time with this. She loved that cat very much. Yesterday we went to my Mom's grave, and left Sasha's picture, with a note asking Mom to take care of her.

Arthur too will miss her, he thought she was fun to sniff, and didn't usually scratch him. Now he wont get to borrow anymore of her mouse toys either.

Goodbye Sasha. You were much loved.
