What’s Mew at Catster: Check Out These February 2018 Cat Events

Looking for a way to celebrate our feline friends this month? We’ve found some February 2018 cat events:

All month:

National Pet Dental Health

Our cats’ oral health care is so important, which is why the American Veterinary Medical Association sponsors National Pet Dental Health Month every February. Dental woes can cause our cats pain and can develop into more serious conditions. Talk to your vet this month about the best dental care for your cat.

Spay/Neuter Awareness Month

As a foster kitten caretaker, I know all too well the importance of spay/neuter. Not only does spay/neuter help cut down cat overpopulation and give homeless animals already in shelters a chance, but it has important health benefits for our own pets, too. It can help curb potentially dangerous behaviors like roaming, and it can reduce the risk of certain feline cancers. If finances are a problem, there are lots of shelters and clinics that offer low-cost spay/neuter.

Catnap Café

For those of you who are world travelers AND cat lovers, have we got a travel destination for you! In Christchurch, New Zealand, cat lovers and Cat Rescue Christchurch volunteers Alyssa and Nate are opening Catnap Café, where you’ll find great coffee, yummy baked goods, free Wi-Fi and, best of all, adoptable cats. The café plans to open this month. For more information, visit catnapcafe.co.nz.

If you’re in the Houston area, you won’t want to miss the 2018 Cupid’s Crawl Pub Run, which benefits Houston’s Friends For Life Animal Shelter and Sanctuary. The annual 5K starts at noon at Kung Fu Saloon. From there, walkers, runners and beer enthusiasts will venture to four other pubs, then back to Kung Fu Saloon for an after party. One beer at each of the five bars on the run is included in the registration. Register online for $45, or pay $50 the day of the race. The run is hosted by Kung Fu Running Club and surrounding area running clubs. For more information, visit thedriven.net or facebook.com.

Tuesday, Feb. 13: Death by a Whisker

Death by a Whisker book.
Death by a Whisker by T.C. LoTempio.

Grab a cup of coffee, a nice blanket and your favorite feline friend and settle down to read T.C. LoTempio’s latest Cat Rescue Mystery Novel. It’s the second in the series featuring Sydney McCall and her tabby, Toby, who help her sister Kat run the local animal shelter. In this book, the sister’s latest fundraiser is everything they could wish for until someone turns up dead. It’s up to Syd and Toby to pounce on the killer. Published by Crooked Lane Books; available on Amazon and in bookstores. Hardcover is $26.99.

Tuesday, Feb. 20: Love Your Pet Day

This holiday was created as a day for pet lovers to show their fur family members how much they care. Take some time to spend with your feline friend, playing, snuggling or just hanging out.

Wednesday, Feb. 28: Java Cat Café Film Festival Deadline

To celebrate its one-year anniversary, Java Cats Café, located in Atlanta, will be hosting a film festival featuring cat-themed short films and cat home videos. The festival takes place on April 28, and today is the deadline for entries. For information on prizes and how to enter, visit javacatscafe.com/film-festival/.

  1. Love your pet day??? A completely bogus invented holiday. No doubt products will be marketed for it, which is its true purpose.

If you don’t love your pet every day, you’re doing it wrong.

If you don’t love your pet every day, will you bother to love your pet on this day?
