    Consistency Chunky loaf
    Crude Protein 5%
    Crude Fat 6%
    Crude Fiber 2%
    Moisture 78%
    Calories 1,325 kcal ME/kg

We’ve found that Ziwi Peak Canned Lamb Recipe Cat Food is the best cat food in Australia because it’s well-rounded, has a simple ingredient list, and has healthy ingredient sources. The first five ingredients consist of lamb meat and lamb organs, and the recipe also contains New Zealand Green Mussel, which is a natural source of chondroitin and glucosamine.

It contains 100% single-sourced lamb that’s also free-range, grass-fed, and free of antibiotics, growth promotants, and added hormones. You can also rest assured in knowing that Ziwi partners with ethical and sustainable New Zealand farms.

We also like that this cat food doesn’t contain any grains, added sugars, preservatives, or unnecessary fillers. It’s also suitable for all life stages, so your young kitten can keep eating this food into adulthood.

The only issue that we’ve really found with this food is that it’s fairly expensive, and if your cat doesn’t like a pate texture, there’s a good chance it won’t like this food.

    Pros
    • First five ingredients are lamb meat and organs
    • Contains New Zealand Green Mussel
    • Free of grains, added sugars, preservatives, and unnecessary fillers
    • Ethically and sustainably sourced
    • Suitable for all life stages
    Cons
    • Relatively expensive

    Crude Fat 3%
    Crude Fiber 3%

    Calories 915 kcal/kg

If you’re looking for a more budget-friendly option, Purina One Adult Hairball with Chicken Wet Cat Food is the best wet cat food in Australia for the money you pay. While it may not be the cheapest option available, it’s still relatively affordable and contains high-quality ingredients.

While cheap cat food usually contains low-quality animal by-products and artificial colors and flavors, this recipe doesn’t contain artificial colors and flavors and preservatives. It does contain healthy omega-6 fatty acids to promote healthy skin and coat. This particular recipe also has fiber to help reduce hairball formation, and it also has vitamins B2 and B6 to reduce excessive shedding.

Our only concern is that the ingredient list is a little ambiguous about the meat protein as it contains chicken, lamb, beef, and fish products. However, it’s still one of the best options available among affordable cat food options.

    Pros
    • No artificial colors or flavors
    • No preservatives
    • Reduces hairballs
    • Includes omega-6 fatty acids for healthy skin and coat
    Cons
    • Meat sources are ambiguous

    3. Applaws Natural Wet Cat Food – Premium Choice

    Consistency Flakes in broth
    Crude Protein 12%
    Crude Fat 1%
    Crude Fiber 2%
    Moisture 86%
    Calories 529 kcal/kg

Applaws Tuna and Prawn Natural Wet Cat Food is a premium cat food that’s both healthy and delicious for cats. It’s made with natural ingredients, including natural sources of taurine and omega-3 fatty acids. The food also contains hydrating broth, so it’s a great choice for cats that don’t tend to drink a lot of water on their own.

Another great thing about this cat food is that it’s healthy for all life stages and all breeds. As a premium cat food brand, it does come with premium prices. However, the limited list of ingredients can keep cat owners worry-free about their cats eating any unhealthy, low-quality ingredients. So, the investment is well worth it.

    Pros
    • Made with natural ingredients
    • Natural sources of taurine and omega-3 fatty acids
    • Contains hydrating broth
    • Suitable for all life stages and all breeds
    • Limited ingredients

The recipe contains natural ingredients with added vitamins, minerals, and amino acids. It doesn’t constantly have any artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives.

The consistency of the food is also fairly palatable and easy to chew for kittens. However, keep in mind that wheat flour is pretty high up on the ingredient list. While wheat isn’t harmful for kittens to eat, some may have a wheat allergy or food sensitivity and have difficulty digesting it.

    Pros
    • Science-based formula
    • Contains natural ingredients
    • No artificial colors, flavors, or preservatives
    • Palatable consistency
    Cons
    • Contains wheat flour

Pro Plan Chicken in Gravy Adult Cat Food is a tasty meal for cats that also has many other benefits. It contains ingredients that help reduce hairball formation and supports a healthy digestive system and helps your cat maintain a healthy weight. The formula also includes inulin, which helps support nutrient absorption and reduces litter box smells.

The recipe uses real meat as its first ingredient and doesn’t contain any artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives. However, the meat is a little unclear because it’s comprised of chicken, lamb, and fish products. So, it’s uncertain exactly what these products entail.

    Pros
    • Reduce hairball formation
    • Supports healthy digestive system
    • Inulin helps with nutrient absorption and litter box odors
    • Real meat is first ingredient
    • No artificial colors, flavors, and preservatives

This recipe also contains tuna and is fortified with taurine and other essential vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, vitamin E, potassium, copper, and manganese. It excludes any grains, artificial colors, and preservatives.

You can select an extra-large 10-ounce can, which is a convenient packaging option for multi-cat homes. Just keep in mind that some of the pieces of meat tend to be on the larger side, so you might have to cut them up into smaller sizes for your cat to have an easier time eating them.

    Pros
    • Uses cage-free chicken
    • Contains essential vitamins and minerals
    • Excludes grains, artificial colors, and preservatives
    • Convenient packaging and portions for multi-cat homes
    Cons
    • Meat pieces can be too big for smaller cats

    7. Felix Sensations Jellies Wet Cat Food

    Consistency Chunks in gravy
    Crude Protein 5%
    Crude Fat 5%
    Crude Fiber 1%

    Calories n/a

Felix Sensations Jellies are a more affordable option, and the jelly consistency tends to be more palatable than gravy for some picky cats. The recipe contains a blend of chicken, beef, and fish, which can be delicious for cats. However, the complex ingredient list can be a disadvantage for cats with particularly sensitive stomachs.

The recipe also lists meat derivatives as its main source of protein. There’s a lack of clarity surrounding this term, and definitive statements about the meat quality can’t be made. However, Felix brand hasn’t had any recalls to date and has a consistent track record of manufacturing and producing safe cat food.

    Pros
    • Affordable option
    • Palatable jelly consistency
    • Blend of chicken, been, and fish is enticing for picky cats
    Cons
    • Not for cats with sensitive stomachs
    • Sources of meat are unclear

    Calories 85 kcal/100 g

Dine Saucy Morsels With Salmon Wet Cat Food is a relatively popular choice amongst cat owners. It lists real meat as its first ingredient and the formula is fortified with additional essential vitamins and minerals.

While this recipe has salmon mentioned in its name, it can also contain beef or chicken, so it’s not a reliable option for cats with beef and chicken allergies and food sensitivities. However, for many cats, it’s a delicious meal packed with various meat flavors.

The food label does mention colors and flavors in the ingredient list, and the source of these additional colors and flavors are unclear.

    Pros
    • Lists real meat as first ingredient
    • Contains various kinds of meat for delicious flavor
    • Fortified with essential vitamins and minerals
    Cons
    • Not for cats with food allergies or sensitive stomachs

Buyer’s Guide: Choosing the Best Wet Cat Food in Australia

When it comes to buying wet cat food, it’s pretty easy to get lost in pet food labels. That’s why it’s important to stay focused on just a few key items. Here are the essentials of cat food.

    Wet Food vs Dry Food

Contrary to popular belief, dry cat food isn’t necessarily worse than wet cat food. Both have their own sets of pros and cons.

The benefits of dry cat food are that it tends to have a longer shelf life and provides interesting textures for your cat. It’s also more portable and convenient because you can leave it out for longer periods of time.

The disadvantage of dry cat food is that it lacks moisture, so it’s not the best option for cats that don’t really like to drink water. Cheap and low-quality dry food also contains unhealthy fillers to bind the kibble together.

The benefits of wet cat food are that it contains a lot more moisture, and many brands include hydrating broth for cats. It also can contain real bits or flakes of meat that cats will find very tasty.

However, wet cat food can’t be left out for a long time. So, it’s not a good option for free-feeding cats. In some cases, it can also negatively affect a cat’s dental health.

So, based on these factors, dry food can be the better option for some cats, while wet cat food is the way to go for others. It depends on your unique cat and your living situation. A third option, however, is to mix both wet and dry foods into your cat’s diet.

    Macronutrient Breakdown

For the most part, cats need a high-protein diet with protein sourced from animal meat. Cats are obligate carnivores, so they need a meat-based diet to stay healthy. When looking for wet cat food, try to find food that contains a minimum of 30% protein.

Cats also need a substantial amount of fat in their diet because this is where they get a lot of energy. A healthy percentage of fat in a cat’s meal is around 9%.

    Calculating Macronutrient Percentages

You can find the cat food’s macronutrient percentages by finding the guaranteed analysis on the food label. Most wet cat food labels will contain the crude macronutrient percentages, which include the percentage of moisture in the food.

It does require a little math, but you can quickly do the calculations to find the percentages on a dry matter basis, which will provide a clearer picture of the macronutrient breakdown. Here are the steps to finding the dry matter basis:

    • Find the moisture content and subtract the number from 100
    • Divide the guaranteed analysis nutrient by the dry matter
    • Multiply by 100

For example, let’s say the guaranteed analysis of a wet cat food has these percentages:

    • Crude Protein: 10%
    • Crude Fat: 4%
    • Crude Fiber: 1%
    • Moisture: 85%

You can use these steps to find the percentage of protein on a dry matter basis:

    • Step 1: 100 – 85 = 15
    • Step 2: 10 ÷ 15 = .667
    • Step 3: .667 × 100 = 66.7

So, the percentage of protein in this particular cat food would actually be 66.7%. You can follow the same steps for fat and fiber by using the proper percentage.

    Essential Vitamins and Minerals

Cats have a set of essential vitamins and minerals that they need to maintain healthy bodily functioning. Organizations, such as the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) have standards for cat food to contain certain amounts of specific vitamins and minerals.

    Natural Ingredients

Try to look for food that’s made with natural ingredients. Avoid foods with artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives because these ingredients are ambiguous and can be harmful to your cat in the long run.

You also don’t have to go overboard and purchase food that uses “human-grade” ingredients because this term is also fairly unclear. There isn’t really a standard for what human-grade ingredients have to entail. So, a recipe that contains human-grade food doesn’t always mean that the food is nutritious.
