1. Salem (Sabrina the Teenage Witch)

No list of black cats would be complete without Salem Saberhagen. This snarky feline from Sabrina the Teenage Witch was a 500-year-old warlock, punished by the Witches’ Council to live a century as a cat after trying to take over the world.

Salem wasn’t just a pet; he was a star in his own right. With razor-sharp one-liners, over-the-top schemes, and surprisingly tender moments, he brought comic relief to every episode. The animatronic puppet may look clunky by today’s standards, but Salem’s wit and sass are timeless.


2. Binx (Hocus Pocus)

In Disney’s Hocus Pocus, Thackery Binx was a teenage boy from 1693 Salem, Massachusetts, cursed by witches to live forever as a black cat. For centuries, he protected the infamous Black Flame Candle, guiding modern kids to stop the Sanderson sisters from returning.

Binx is more than a talking sidekick. He’s the emotional anchor of the film. His loyalty, sacrifice, and tragic backstory made audiences cry as much as they laughed. Even today, Binx remains one of the most beloved Halloween cats of all time.


3. Luna (Sailor Moon)

Anime fans know Luna as the crescent moon–marked guardian cat who guided Usagi Tsukino (Sailor Moon) and the other Sailor Guardians. More than a mentor, Luna was a voice of wisdom, strategy, and encouragement throughout the series.

Her sleek design and caring personality made her one of the most iconic anime cats of all time. Luna showed that black cats aren’t symbols of bad luck. They’re guardians, protectors, and companions.


4. Felix the Cat

Long before Saturday morning cartoons, Felix the Cat was already a household name. Created in the silent film era of the 1920s, Felix became one of the very first animated superstars. With his mischievous grin and clever antics, he set the stage for the cartoon characters that followed.

Felix merchandise, comic strips, and even clocks cemented him as a cultural icon. Nearly a century later, his black silhouette is still instantly recognizable.


5. Jiji (Kiki’s Delivery Service)

In Hayao Miyazaki’s Kiki’s Delivery Service, Jiji is the sarcastic, witty sidekick to young witch-in-training Kiki. Unlike Salem’s chaotic energy, Jiji’s humor is subtle, often playing the straight man to Kiki’s struggles.

But beyond the jokes, Jiji represents loyalty and growth. As Kiki matures and gains independence, their bond evolves, making Jiji one of Studio Ghibli’s most layered and memorable animal companions.


6. Blair (Soul Eater)

Anime fans will recognize Blair from Soul Eater, the magical cat with a playful streak. Though she has a human form, Blair often appears as a sleek black cat with glowing yellow eyes.

She’s cheeky, mysterious, and powerful: a mix of traits that captures why black cats are so often linked to magic. Blair proves that in anime, cats aren’t just sidekicks; they can be stars with depth, humor, and strength.


7. Socks (The Clinton White House Cat)

Not all famous black cats are fictional. Socks, adopted by Chelsea Clinton in 1991, became a household name during Bill Clinton’s presidency. He often appeared in the press, on Christmas cards, and even had his own fan mail.

Socks showed a softer side of politics, charming children and adults alike. For a time, he may have been the most famous cat in America.


8. Snowball II (The Simpsons)

After the Simpson family’s first cat, Snowball I, passed away, they adopted her replacement: an all-black feline ironically named Snowball II. With her glossy coat and piercing yellow-green eyes, she became a quiet but constant presence in the household.

Though rarely in the spotlight compared to other Springfield pets, Snowball II was generally loyal and affectionate toward the family (including Santa’s Little Helper, the dog). In classic Simpsons fashion, tragedy struck more than once — with four different “Snowballs” meeting untimely ends. Each replacement kept the same name to avoid the hassle (and expense) of updating pet bowls.


9. India (The Bush Family’s Cat)

The Bush family’s cat, India, lived in the White House during George W. Bush’s presidency. A Bombay cat with a sleek black coat, India lived quietly compared to Socks, but she was a cherished member of the First Family for nearly two decades.

10. Blackie (The World’s Richest Cat)
