One of my favorite bloggers — Janet Tobiassen Crosby DVM at — is looking for people to share their stories about special needs pets. At a recent conference, a colleague excitedly shared photos of a tripod cat she had just adopted to Dr Janet. Cats can manage very well on three legs (sometimes, even just two), but most folks are reluctant to adopt a pet who they feel might incur large vet bills.

Oftentimes, special needs pets don’t really require much more in the way of care than any other pet. For example, blind cats (like Homer) adapt readily to their environments. FIV positive cats often live long healthy lives. Other afflictions may require more time and more vet visits on your part, but the love you that’s returned makes it all worthwhile.
