Maine Coons are one of the most popular cats in the United States. There are several breeders in North Carolina, so you should have no problem finding a kitten. Of course, not all breeders are equal. Some produce more high-quality, expensive kittens than others. Some focus more on pet-quality cats, while others focus on breeding show felines.

Choosing the perfect breeder should be easy with several catteries in the area. We’ll look at some of the most long-standing catteries in the state to give you an idea of what’s available.

The 8 Maine Coon Breeders in North Carolina

1. Bald Mountain Maine Coons

📍 Asheville, North Carolina

This cattery produces kittens in various colors, including red, black, and tortie, as well as many tabbies and solid colors. They have every type of Maine Coon color you could imagine. They are located in the Smoky Mountains of North Carolina, but they also regularly sell kittens in Chicago.

Based on their website, they seem to produce litters regularly. All litters are registered with The International Cat Association (TICA), but you must register your kitten. They feed their cats nutritious food and train them to use a litter box.

2. Megacoon

📍 Sanford, North Carolina

Megacoon is located on a 13-acre wooded lot with a “normal” house built specifically to house cats. It is TICA-registered and continues to meet all certification requirements. The owners are professional cat breeders who handle all their cats from the day they are born.

They do not place kittens until they are 13 weeks of age to ensure proper socialization. However, that means you may be waiting longer for your cat. They have a great satisfaction guarantee, but they no longer ship cats by air freight. They welcome owners to come to pick up their new kittens and travel back home.

3. Panther Hill

📍 Highlands, North Carolina

While this cattery isn’t registered with the TICA, they are breeder members of the Maine Coon Breeders and Fanciers Association. They screen their cats for hip dysplasia, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and polycystic kidney disease.

This helps ensure that their kittens are healthy. They produce show cats and companion animals. Their kittens have access to a screened-in back porch for plenty of fresh air and exercise.

4. Carolina Meows

📍 Raleigh, North Carolina

This cattery has raised cats for over 30 years. They have a huge farm, though their kittens are raised underfoot in their home. They have bred many of the same lines for generations. All their kittens are sent home with a kitten starter kit, which includes food.

They also provide all their kittens with their first vaccinations and deworming if necessary. Their kittens come with complete health records, so you’ll know their health history before purchasing them.

They ship through a few airlines and accept payments through PayPal for convenience. Their cats have won regional and international cat shows, so their kittens tend to be a bit more expensive. However, they focus on pet cats and do not breed exclusively for shows like some other breeders.

5. Firelynx Cattery

📍 Charlotte, North Carolina

This cattery is TICA-certified. It has produced five pedigreed generations thus far. Many pedigreed cats are show animals, which may make their kittens a bit more expensive. The cattery aims to breed cats with docile personalities, though it admits that personality differences exist.

If you’re looking for a kitten, you may want to get on their waiting list. They deliver their cats in some situations, so you may be able to purchase the felines if you live further away from their cattery.

6. Aelur Coons

📍 Sauratown Mountains, North Carolina

Focusing on American and European lines, this cattery health tests and DNA tests all of their cats to ensure a healthy and diverse gene pool. Their cats come in a variety of sizes and coat colors. They should have something for just about every cat owner.

Their major focus is on producing companion animals. They produce intelligent, family-oriented cats, but they also produce show cats. They have litters available regularly, so you’ll likely be able to get a kitten relatively quickly through them.

7. Hope Cats Maine Coons

📍 Henderson, North Carolina

This particular breeder has been breeding cats for 25 years. They originally started raising championed cats, as their primary purpose was to create show animals. Their focus is still on show cats, though they have also started producing companion animals. All their cats are hand-raised inside the home—not in cages.

They health test all their kittens for diseases and run regular tests on their breeding cats. This helps ensure that their pets are high-quality and healthy. This cattery is Cat Fanciers’ Association (CFA) registered, and most of their kittens follow show standards.

If you’re looking for show kittens, Hopecats is a great option. However, many of their cats are suitable for pets as well.

8. Royal Maine Coons

📍 Weaverville, North Carolina

Royal Maine Coons has been around for a few years and regularly produces high-quality cats. They are run by a single person who loves Maine Coons, so you won’t be dealing with a large group of people like you sometimes do with catteries.

They regularly update their Facebook page so you can visit for updated pictures of kittens. They pre-approve all of their buyers for kittens before placing you on a waitlist. They are somewhat more careful about who receives a feline, so be prepared for a bit of an application process.

Conclusion

There are many Maine Coon catteries in North Carolina. If you’re looking for a Maine Coon, you should have no problem finding one. You shouldn’t have to wait around long and should be able to select a breeder that best matches what you’re looking for in a kitten.

We recommend taking your time to select a breeder that raises the kittens in a way that best matches your purposes. If you live in a house with dogs, find a breeder who socializes their kittens with canines and other cats. It is usually best to choose cats raised in a home environment. However, that is not necessary in all cases. Many people who raise their cats in a dedicated cattery are conscientious about socialization.
