Renee adopted Quasi from a shelter in 2005. Although no one is sure what caused the cat’s unusual look, Quasi herself writes, “The general theory is that I have a cleft lip that never got corrected and connects to my eye. I can see fine out of one, but not so much out of the other. I also have a difficult time smelling since I have some sinus issues. My hearing, though, is excellent ÔÇô- I can hear a crinkly wrapper from two floors up!”
In 2006, the pair started My Ugly Kitty (“Ugly never looked so good!”), where Renee sells Quasi prints, along with other non-cat-related crafty creations. Shortly after opening the Etsy shop, Renee decided to start the Original Ugly Kitty Fund to help raise money for shelter cats in need.
Donors who contribute $1, $5, or $10 receive a special Ugly Kitty button and thank-you note from Quasi. Unfortunately, the shelter that rescued Quasi has since closed, so Renee now donates the money she raises to Cats R Us adoption center in Annapolis, MD, where she more recently adopted her three-legged cat, ILean. Since 2006, the Ugly Kitty fund has raised an impressive $4,000 for charity, and goes to show how one far-from-ugly cat can inspire a wealth of kindness in others.
