Molly and the Homeless Pet Placement League: Heroes of the Pet World

Houston has an overwhelming number of homeless pets. Every day, countless dogs and cats enter shelters, face medical crises, or are abandoned on the side of the road. Even with dozens of dedicated rescues and thousands of passionate volunteers, the reality is that there simply aren’t enough homes, fosters, or financial resources to save them all.

That’s why people like Molly are so essential.

How Two Kindred Cat Ladies Met

Molly and I met a few years ago through a volunteer-run Facebook group that highlights animals at risk of euthanasia at our municipal shelter. I wanted to save a cat who had a broken pelvis but was about to travel, and Molly stepped in to foster while I was away. It didn’t take long for us to realize we were kindred cat ladies.

Not long after, she made the bold decision to leave her career in electrical engineering to devote herself full-time to rescue as director of the Homeless Pet Placement League (HPPL), and she has saved countless lives ever since. She partners with rescuers in Cleveland, Texas’s so-called “Corridor of Cruelty,” scours shelter euthanasia lists to find the animals most in need, and takes in strays, ensuring they receive immediate medical care for everything from malnutrition and mange to FIP and injuries caused by abuse.

What HPPL Does

HPPL rehabilitates stray and abandoned dogs and cats with complex medical needs—animals with conditions like rodent ulcers, severe mange, broken bones and burns from human cruelty, and injuries requiring tube feeding. The organization also provides financial assistance to pet owners who are unable to assume the cost of spaying and neutering their animals, as well as to trappers completing trap-neuter-return (TNR) of community cats. Through all of this work, they educate the public in an effort to prevent future animal suffering and neglect.

Going Above and Beyond

Molly has rescued cats from the side of the highway and from neglected cages in garages, coordinated emergency placement for more than 40 cats after their owner passed away (and even adopted the owner’s dog), and built strong relationships with local veterinarians who always help however they can. She also works closely with transport partners to send HPPL pets to loving homes out of state.

She and her husband have fostered hundreds of cats in their home, and their dedication doesn’t take a break. While on their honeymoon in Greece, Molly even worked with a local TNR group to help get island cats spayed and neutered. Back home in Houston, she trains volunteers, manages the rescue’s social media, and facilitates adoptions.

In 2025, HPPL provided roughly 700 vouchers for reduced-cost spay/neuter services. As the organization knows well, prevention is the only cure for animal overpopulation.

Through all the highs and lows of rescue work, Molly maintains a great sense of humor and a positive attitude. No matter the challenge, her focus is always on improving the lives of homeless pets.

How You Can Help

Readers can help by ensuring their own pets are spayed and neutered (overpopulation isn’t a uniquely Houston problem), signing up to foster or volunteer with a shelter or rescue in their area, or donating money and supplies. HPPL has several ways to donate through their website at hppl.org, as well as fundraisers through Cuddly for specific pets.

If you’re in the Houston area, join HPPL for their annual tailgate party on January 24, 2026 in Sugar Land! More info at https://hppl.org/the-ultimate-tailgate-party/
