Arrival Story:
My husband and I were grieving the loss of my cat [Catman] I'd had for 13 years. I was still in shock, really, when we started going to the shelters to look - a little premature I now realize. So I chose the first cat who looked like Catman - a young tuxedo. We gave him a test drive at the NYC shelter and he seemed to like being held and even purred a bit. A very important factor since that was what I was used to. Well..... when we got him home, he was anything BUT snuggly - very stand-offish, and understandably nervous and shy. He wouldn't come out of the bathroom for anything. He did like to watch us take showers, tho. Thus the nickname - Perv, which eventually mutated into Pervis. So here I was with a cat who was a total opposite of the one I'd just lost. For weeks he didn't want to have anything to do with us. When he finally ventured out of the bathroom, he just ran around the place chirping (which was quite charming). Any time I came close to where he was sleeping or sitting, he'd get up and move just out of arms reach and turn his head away. I was soooo disappointed. He wasn't aggressive or mean - just not socialized as a kitten, apparently. So I decided Pervis would become my "pet" project to help make him feel welcome and loved and hope for the best. He attached himself to a little stuffed toy cat and would often lick it like a mom would a kitten. Idea! Get another cat to be a Pervis buddy and this time take the time to find a more snuggly cat and maybe it would rub off on Pervis. I could have my cake and eat it, too. So I went to a different shelter (- the Humane Society of NY) that spends a lot of time getting to know the cats (and the adopters) before placing them, unlike the first . They have a great matchmaking service and helped pick out just the right kitty to match for my personality, living situation, and most importantly - Pervis. So along came Pi! A kitten, no less. I was hoping that an older cat might be the ticket, but was advised after my description of Pervis, that a little younger tyke might be less threatening and help Pervis out of his shy reserved personality. It worked! In the 6 months following, I've witnessed a transformation in Pervis that's been remarkable. With a lot of effort and some gentle encouragement and with the help of his now-inseparable pal Pi, he's gone from "don't touch me" to "please let me snuggle in your lap, give you kisses, butt your head and be the first to greet the Chinese take-out guy". He's a total character and will always have some of the scars from early neglect. But he is most certainly a different cat than he was when he first came to us. Wouldn't trade him for the world. He hasn't met my gallery cat, Oberon, yet. They live in separate places. Stay tuned.
