Arrival Story:
I went to buy a used carpet one day at the end of December. The carpet was in fairly good condition considering there were like 50 cats in this small apartment. The lady told me she was getting kicked out and had to sell everything. I felt sorry for her. She tried to sell me used candles! But I was only there for the carpet; I only brought money for the carpet with me. She said she had no place to go and she loved her cats so much. She talked about one that just had babies and she doesn’t want to get rid of that litter because her sons girlfriend loves them the like her own children. She showed me a beautiful half Siamese half something male, she said didn’t want to fix him because someone would pay good money for a cat like that or for kittens from him. She told me about how she had been involved in rescue programs and that is how she got most of her cats. She told me about different abusive families she had taken the cats from and different cats that came from dumpsters and alleys. I told her I was thinking about helping out at the humane society because they needed help or maybe fostering when I got a bigger place but for now my house was full. She started making me feel sorry for her again because the cats needed a place to stay while she was kicked out. So I said well maybe I could make room for one, she and I quickly glanced around the room full of cats. I saw so many really pretty and friendly ones, and I thought wow they are all so nice how can I decide! But while I was thinking about that the lady already decided which one I would take. After chasing this one around the room and getting into a corner she comes back and gives it to me. This cat looked so gross I didn’t want to touch it. It had ooze pouring out it eyes and its lip was black and its hair fell out like crazy. But I couldn’t say gross I don’t want that cat it is disgusting because if I was going to rescue later, I wouldn’t be able to choose. Every dog and every cat are beautiful and special I kept telling myself. After a minute or so she was purring, so I thought well at least she is sweet. The lady told me that the eye thing was just allergies she had taken her to the vet and nothing is wrong. She said about the tooth, that she rescued this cat after a man kicked her in her face one night while he was drunk. And the hair shed so much because she was a long hair cat. But she said she is UTD on all shots and has been desexed. Once again as I was leaving I said, “This is only temporary for a month right.” The lady said, “yes it is only temporary I couldn’t stand to be without my babies for too long“ The next day she stopped by my house to make sure it was an ok place for a cat to be. Then I waited for her phone call, one-month, 2 months, and 3 months. I asked around if anyone would want her, no one. I called the humane society and put a listing with them. Nothing. No one wanted an old ugly cat. Meanwhile I am taking her to the vet and getting her tooth looked at and every day putting eye drops in her eyes. So then in June I find out I am moving to Germany in July. I really need to find a place for this cat. I called the local humane society and they said they were full and couldn’t take anymore, but they put me on the waiting list. I called vets, people anyone trying to figure out something. And because I had paid so much into trying to get her better I couldn’t drop her off at the pound, which only put the cats to sleep. She was such a sweet cat, even if she always ran from people, she always purred as soon as you would catch her. She was pretty in her unique way. She had really warmed up to me by the end and would some days even come and sleep with me or sit on my lap. So I had her kenneled for the month of July while I was away. I came back tried to find her a home again. I was looking online anywhere in VA, WV, NC and MD for a home for her, calling and emailing all the shelters I saw online no one had any openings for her, everyone always suggested having her PTS. I couldn’t do that. One day (3 days before I left the country) while shopping for a crate for my dog in PetsMart in Roanoke, I noticed they took in abused and feral cats. I told them my story and they said she would be considered abused and/or feral. So they took her in! As I drove to the airport on my final day I dropped her off and said a litter pray for her that she would find a home and be as happy as she was with me the last few months. I have tried to call there a few times, to see if she has found a home. But because of the time difference and they aren’t there every day, it is difficult. Say a little pray for Melißabeth tonight.

Bio:
She has a broken tooth and some sort of eye problem, but no matter what always purred. This cat should still be at PetSmart in Roanoke VA
