Arrival Story: I was in college in Florida. My parents were caring for my rabbit and he passed away February 28, 1997. After almost a year of mourning, I decided to volunteer at Halifax Humane Society. I started January 1998. As happens when one volunteers at a shelter, they have to adopt - I think it's the law.
Well, when I could finally adopt a pet (financially and with permission from the apartment I lived in), I went in search of the purrfect pet. I wanted an adult cat, preferably white, but I didn't want a torti because my cousin had one and she was so mean. So, when I went in on September 1, 1998, I began to seach. The first kitty I got out was a small kitten - a torti. I wanted to just warm myself up for the actual search. Well, that didn't work.
I fell in love with this sweetheart. I grabbed her papers and ran to the desk to put a hold on her. But, I had to pay my pet deposit first. So, I drove home as fast as I could, put down the deposit, and raced back to the shelter - about 8 miles. I put the hold on her and walked back in the room to get her out. Someone was holding her! But, they put her away and I got her out again. For the next 7 days I had to wait for her to get her spay surgery, I visited the shelter every day from open to close, except Labor Day. That was a horrible day!
Finally the day came. I watched her surgery then held her little body while she woke up. I took her home 2 hours later. She ran around the apartment, knowing she owned the place. Less than an hour later, she had already pulled out her lone stitch.
And, as they say, the rest is history!
