Arrival Story: The winter of 1995 was cold; many days were below zero. One day we heard a cat crying. We investigated and saw a young male tabby. He let us get close, but would run away before we could reach him. So, we built him a little shelter with a tarp, a box, and a carpet. It was still cold, but he seemed to like it. He also liked the food and water we provided (although the water usually froze).
We decided the only way we were going to catch him was with a havahart trap. We set it up under his tarp and put some food in it. I told my husband it might be a while, so we might as well go inside. Before I finished the sentence, we heard the trap door close and there inside was Spencer.
Amazed at our early success, we took him inside into a small room where we prepared to open the trap. Since he had never let us get close we thought he might be pretty wild. Considering that he had been so afraid, we were prepared for all sorts of possibilities - except for what actually happened.
I sat on the floor and opened the door. The little guy walked right out, crawled on my lap, started to purr, and went to sleep. Right then and there, we knew we had been had! We think he had planned this all along - lured us in with his plaintive cries in the cold, played a little hard to get, and then the final curl on the lap - yes, he is a genius!
Bio: Spencer is a beautiful tabby with a perfect butterfly mark on his shoulders. He is best friends with his little brother Maxwell. He pretty much takes care of all his siblings, whether they like it or not.
He knows when it is bedtime and lets us know with a lengthy stare down. He stakes out his spot early, but won't settle until lights are out!
