Come, gather, little kittens, I have a story to tell.
Once upon a time there was a website called Catster. It sprang from another website called Dogster.
The furs on both Dogster and Catster were very friendly. Every kitty had their own page, with pages and pages of pictures and videos and diary entries galore!
There were also groups of kitties that got together from every week to every day to help their fellow felines and their humans through whatever problem they may have. There were also fun groups that would solve mysteries and throw parties. There were also forums that did the same thing. There were prayer groups for kitties that were sick or lost, or for humans that were sick. There were groups and forums of every kind for every kind of kitty. There were many weddings, funerals, and holiday parties, and every year, a kitty named Samoa chose the hottest Dreamboats on Catster!
Way back when, best diaries were chosen also, there was also a Catster of the Day and of the Week. The week after I left for the Bridge, I was chosen Cat of the Week.
Every year, there was also The World's Coolest Cat and Dog Show, and there were many areas to enter, such as Costumes and Naughtiest Cat.
There was also good things like Instant Messaging, where we kitties could talk to our friends for hours if we wanted to!
Here comes the scary part....
Then one day, everything changed. A company called Say Media took over Dogster and Catster!
Oh yeah, Almost everything remained the same, except for a few things. Instead of green, Catster turned purple, there was no more Instant messaging, but I think that disappeared before anyway, and the World's Coolest Dog and Cat Show disappeared! *screams*
But, well, as long as we still had our friends, it didn't matter quite as much. Sandy, Mojo and I kind of started to back off for awhile though, because, well, our Mom discovered something else....something called Facebook.
Everything seemed to be going okay, I suppose there were a few problems here and there, Catster still remained merrily (?) rolling along.
Until.... *scary music*
One day we got a message saying that the mean old Say Media monster was taking our site...our home, our friends...away from us! *bigger screams*
It's because of the almighty dollar. Catster and Dogster aren't making much money.
I don't understand anything about money. Here's what I do understand:
I, along with Sandy, Scooter, Munchkin and Mojo, have made many wonderful friends on Catster.
I've been on Catster almost since it began, since August 9th, 2004, for Cat's sake!
I, along with millions of cats (and dogs on Dogster) have lived, met many wonderful friends, got married (AND divorced!) met a new love (Leo), been to many weddings and parties and prayer meetings, helped solve detective cases, been Cat of the Day and Week, gotten sick, went to the Bridge with the support for my Mom from my friends.
My Mom has also been through a lot with Catster Moms/dads' help, like the pet food recalls, all my conditions like having teeth pulled, dandruff, and my kidney problems and all of Sandy's issues too, and now Mojo's (even though he thinks he's purr-fect!)
It's so very hard to see Catster and Dogster go, because, along with the social fun we've had, we also get serious advice for sick kitties and grief counseling for those of us who've lost someone we've loved.
I remember hanging out with cool cats like The A Team, Bruce the Boss, and a great bunch called The Fiends. There was a cat named Selket who, I think if I was a boy cat, I'd want to marry her. She was beautiful, and I loved hanging around her! Poor Selket, she probably thought I was stalking her! Those cats pretty much ran the social forums for years.
I know, it may be hard for you young kits to understand, but Catster was a great stomping grounds a few years ago, and it could remain that way, but for the mean old monster...."it" doesn't deserve another mention.
So, when my Mom found out about "them" shutting down Dogster and Catster, it was kind of like a slap in the face. At first, we weren't that surprised, since we know some of the kitties that came on here a lot more have stopped coming as often. Then someone suggested saving our diary entries, and when Mom began doing that, she kind of "woke up" and realized how much we've actually been through during these 9+ years, and a lot of kitties and their families have been through a lot more than we have.
Some kitties and their families are trying to save Catster or start a new one. Well, starting a new one might be okay, but for some reason, it just won't be the same. Saving it would be a good idea, but in the back of our minds, we all know that even if we save it, it would only be temporary.
I hate saying that, I know it sounds cruel, but, most people do believe that money does make the world go 'round. :-(
I hate saying goodbye to Catster...I really do. So do Sandy, Scooter, Munchkin and Mojo and our Mom. We've made so many good friends, and thanks to Facebook, we can keep in touch with a lot of them.
We're going to miss you Catster. It's breaking our hearts.
