Sarah was at the Whitman County Animal Shelter's cat bus. I'd been looking for a third cat, Fred was getting sicker, and I wanted to Bear to have a companion if he died. I really wanted a cat that was less adoptable, maybe older, less attractive. I visited the shelter five times and couldn't pick a cat, watching all the cute, friendly cats get adopted, which was nice to see. They do a great job there. Finally I was leaving without a cat AGAIN and Sarah had had enough. She looked at me and just started blinking. I tried to leave and she kept eye contact and blinked away. She picked me. She wasn't looking so good, fat and dumpy, but seemed to get along with other cats, my only real criteria. And she was older, eight years, which was good. Her previous owner had named her Star and while I was working out the paperwork, a shelter volunteer went back to the bus to put her in my carrier. She brought back this smallish pretty tabby cat, and I told them, "no" that wasn't her. They were confused, and we went back to the bus, and I couldn't find the fat dumpy cat, I had her in my carrier! I couldn't believe the instant transformation when she knew she had a home again. She'd been left at the shelter because her owners had "too many cats". Some people don't deserve cats. She refused to answer to Star so I started trying new names on her. She picked Sarah. I took her to the vet and the assistant instantly recognized her. She'd had a litter of kittens and the people must have kept them. The stress of too many cats and their children had caused her to start peeing on beds. Sarah was terrified of children and peed on our girl's beds a couple times until she learned they wouldn't hurt her. She really would prefer to be an only cat but she tolerates others if they keep their distance. She likes Pete and lets him lick her head.
Turns out that Sarah is quite beautiful and quite uncoordinated. Shortly after she moved in, she was accidentally left outside for a couple hours. We think she was walking on the deck rail near a magpie nest. The magpies must have scared her and she fell off the deck. We came home to her limping. She'd ripped out her ACL, both tendons, took a little chunk of bone with it. Our vet says she's only done two other surgeries like this on cats because they normally can't put enough pressure on the joint to rip it like that. After learning that she'd have arthritis within weeks, I decided to go ahead with the $1000 knee surgery to sew the joint back together and remove the bone fragment. This hasn't helped her weight much, though with Bear gone her weight is coming down. She was a stress eater! Sids added a new demension to her routine, he loves to bat at her, and she's getting a bit of excercise with the bird toy. Sometimes she'll even use two paws to swipe at it. Her favorite activity is sitting on my chest and trying to wake me up at 4am. My husband tells me she starts at 2am and scoots as close to my face as possible. Then she sticks her paws out and very gentle claws my face over and over again until I feed her. Needless to say, her claws get trimmed FIRST!

Please check out Benson. He's listed as one of my siblings though he's staying at a vet hospital in Lewiston, Idaho. He's a nice kitty that mom & Marion met yesterday. He's been living in a loving home and needs a new one.

Hello all our dear furriends,
First we want to thank Edgar for bringing this problem to our attention. Thank goodness he assumed there was a glitch at headquarters instead of something worse!!
Mom likes the comment on diaries feature, but asked headquarters if there was a way to see comments left from the home page so that she didn't have to go back and look at our diary entries to find them. She loves catster, but this all can take a lot of time, I'm sure you know.
Headquarters wrote back telling mom to change her preferences so that our diary comments had to be approved by her. That way she would always get to read them. That sounded good, so mom did that. Suddenly we stopped getting comments! Since we haven't been getting very many pawmails either mom guessed that maybe our furiends were busy as well and weren't leaving any. But just in case, mom changed our preferences back to automatically posting a week or so ago.
Today Edgar wrote and told us that he'd tried to leave comments several times. Each time he'd gotten a message saying mom had to approve the comment, but the comment never ever appeared on our diary page. Oh no!! We never got those emails!! We want Edgar's comments and all of yours, too! We have nice furiends, we know you would never say anything that would hurt our feelings.
We sent another message to headquarters today. Of course we haven't heard back yet, but we did want to let our furiends know we love them all and we hope we didn't accidentally hurt your feelings. If you've figured out any good ways for managing those diary comments we'd like to know them!

Mommy is so proud of me, she's been calling me Nurse Sarah because I've been a very good heated blanket for her sore knee. Maybe you don't know mom was hit by a car two weeks ago. She's okay, but she did bang up her knee and has to do funny stuff like put ice on. She also does really cool stuff like put heat pads on it and especially sleep with it on a pillow. That's where I come in, I sleep right on top of mom's knee or even both of them all night long. Some nights this bothers her, but most nights she wakes up and smiles at me. I think I'm nice and warm and make her knee feel better. Bear told me I'm a good girl and my vigilance means he doesn't have to watch mommy at night. I think I like being a nurse...
