My, what a difference a year makes!
When I came to my new home on 11-20-11, I was glad to be among humans again, but I was very skittish. The first few days, I spent a lot of time under the bed whenever my humans were around, and they always gave me the space. I would come out and sit in the room with them, but every sudden movement or sneeze sent me flying back to my room and the safety of underneath the bed.
That Mama-gal had read or heard somewhere that to reassure skittish animals, one should always keep one's back to the animal when moving around. OMC, did I get a laugh out of that! That Mama-gal would sidle along with her face to the wall whenever she passed me :))! As time went on, and after she had twice stepped on my paws, she realized that if I was staying close enough to her to get stepped on twice, I was confident enough now for her to turn around and face me when walking past :))!
As time went on, I relaxed enough to sleep--even on my back--next to her, and to allow ample petting. She learned what kind of petting I most enjoyed. She rearranged my furniture, etc, in ways that made me happy. :c9
Yes, it has been a year of getting close to humans again and making a new and comfortable life for myself. :)
