Yesterday that is what I heard my mom's friend say to her. Mom was talking to her about when I first came here as a foster I as living outside on her patio for almost two weeks, MOL she was going to find me a furever home. Her friend had ask if I stayed in the patio when I lived out there. Mom said no he would leave and come back most nights and sometimes he was gone most of the day. We were not going to make him ours so we had not introduced him to Booboo. That is when her friend made that silly statement, :"just let him do what he does" At first I was like Yea! let me do what I do. Then mom said well he is an indoor only cat now that this is his furever home and I do not want to get a call stating that he has been hit by a car or eaten by a dog or hurt by a mean hooman. Then I was like yea mom you tell her! Mom's friend does not get why mom will not let us go outside she thinks the outside world is a safe place for us and while sometimes I do want to go check it out, it is good mom makes me stay safe inside. Mom's friend has made that statement before she thinks mom should let us be in door/outdoor kitties cause that is how this friend does her kitty. Mom told her "you do what you do" I would no more let them roam outside alone than I would let a human child roam the streets alone. Some humans just don't get it and maybe their kitties will always be safe out side mom even worried over me when I was staying on the patio before she adopted me.
I used to be an indoor-outdoor kitty, but became an indoor kitty long ago. I'm now almost 19 and out family's other kitties died from outside causes. Momma says she's never letting another kitty go outside again. It are fun, but it are too dangerous.
Hey Jez I was like you indoor/outdoor for a long time but became indoor only after 10 years with mom and a I never complained when she made me become an indoor only kitty. Kitties have so much less stress inside. Grandma used to have a kitty that would go outside only to the porch never left the yard but some dogs came on the porch and killed the kitty. :( moma never thinks of letting her kitties out now.
We agree with your Mamma, littleboy. We have a friend that lets her kitties out, and, frankly, Mom wouldn't want to have the worry. She remembers stories of when her friend went looking for her kitty for several days. It just seems way too dangerous to us.
We agree with your mommy littleboy. We aren't allowed outside either. It's too dangerous out there and it's a very skeery place.
Some humans are ignorant. And some, I am sorry to say, are just plain stupid.
I could tell stories...and so could Smokie. And so could poor Bella. When she came in she had a very rare ailment that if it had not been caught could have killed her. It's from 'outside', and it's rare.
It's not 'kind' to let cats be indoor/outdoor cats. The sad truth is the world for us is a big, dangerous place. Fast Cars, Fierce dogs, hungry and territorial and sometimes rabid raccoons....
Why would anyone take tht chance?
It makes no sense.
When we were taken in as companions, as familars, as friends, our lives were changed forever.
We need to be cared for with responsiblity...and that means keeping us in unless we are out with our person on a leash, in a protected enclosure on their property, or out in a carriage.
I don't mean to be harsh...but when I hear things like this, and when people post about cats being killed by cars, dogs, etc...it's heart rending.
dood...yur mom doez what be best for ewe N her peace oh mind which is way more important than a piece oh pie...
nothing wrong with living large and in charge N outside and indoors, if de kitteh haz de rite enviro mint....we haz pals who be in and out N help keep mice N stuffs outta de grain N de barn....
uz.... we canna go out coz we sits at de crossroad oh 2 major high N ways N coyoteez be just over ther
yur mom noes what be best for EWE sew her friend iz crazed....she prob ablee eats two much burd .....
I agree with Irish Orange...Some people are just plain STUPID!!!!!!!! Gma says there are alot of Stupid people out here on the prairie...especially concerning the care of kitties and puppies. Just ignore them!
We are happy that you and your furblings have become Inside Kitties!
Meowmy, too, has seen way too many kitties who were cut short in the prime of their lives or even before they became adults:(
None of us are allowed outdoors, though we have tried to be sneaky a few times...but inside is way more comfy!
My cousin Blackie was an 'escape artist'. He was my mom's sister's cat. He was very friendly, and came to her one day from 'out in the backyard'. She always suspected he had belonged to a retired schoolteacher who lived behind us who either passed away or was put into a nursing home.
Blackie was a great one for slipping out...no one let him out, but he was very fast and would slip right by...there were many afternoons spent looking for him. Obviously, he had been let out.
Mommy and Auntie and everyone were always worried when he got out...because their 'nice' neighborhood was filled with many dangers for kitties, including mean dogs 2 yards away, mean people including one convicted of animal abuse, and cars that raced down the streets (a child had been killed on the street in back of where they lived by a hit and run driver).
Luckily, Blackie remained unscathed, but he was a lucky cat.
I meant when I said that Blackie was let out, he was let out to roam by his previous owner, and got into the habit.
