Recently, a lovely large 39 lb marmalade and white tiger Tabby came to world attention when he was turned into an animal shelter.
The sad thing was that Meow, who was a big handsome orange soul wasn't alone. He was turned in with a canine brother who happened to be an older pit bull.
The dog, tragically, was euthanized.
Meow, was a miracle. Perhaps he would have had a short shelf life, too, if it wasn't for hsi size that garnered attention. He was noticed...and his weight, age, and gentle disposiiton saved him. He was sent to the Santa Fee Animal Shelter, who started to work with him right away to help him lose weight.
Meanwhile, the Spin Doctors were already hard at work. How could such a lovely cat wind up so terribly obese? Stories spread of the neglect heaped on him by his former 'owner'.
The story was, as stories often are, a combination of spin, exaggeration, and pathos as well as things that were not quite the truth.
Meow had been found, a cat abandoned in the deseert. He wandered in to the home of the ladies who would be his 'people'. His real and true person loved him dearly. Did she see to his weight-it appeared she tried to, but the local vet didn't remark that Meow was unhealthy, and as per his person's sister, Meow did not eat more than any normal cat.
Meow wound up losing his home when his person passed from cancer. His person's mom, who had lived with his person, apparently did not feel she could care for the animals and turned them into the shelter.
That her other adult daughter had assured her she would return, and take charge of the animals somehow wasn't heeded or believed. Perhaps there was confusion or disbelief. Grief can do things to people. We are sad for the dog that never stood a c hance.
And Meow became a media celebrity. He went to do a TV show, flying from Santa Fe to NY. And then he returned to his foster home...where he was loved and doted on. For how could you not dote on such a lovely large handsome fellow.
But within hours, Meow became ill. His body gave out.
He passed probably the way he had lived...with a serenity of spirit that enabled our Alex to touch noses to his, her rainbow glossimer wings opening before her, as she lightly hovered above and bid him 'come'.
So what is the meaning of all this? That a large portly and overweight cat was bought to the attention of the right people and saved? That he shouldn't have been allowed to get to that state? That he should have had a better life?
Methinks Meow's 'tao' was that he was a wonderouls Spirit who perhaps bought to light one thing...that no matter how we come in from the cold...or the heat...that we are loving beings who so depend on those who walk on two legs.
I believe....I know that Meow was loved. That was his Tao, his Way. He gave love and recieved love.
That he was a being made of light and love perahps was the answer...that he deserved more...we all of us...all of us still out there, struggling, or existing in small cages, waiting for a home, or a needle...
All of us deserve more...
And perhaps, as our advocate across the Bridge, our Gentle and Kind
friend had a purpose we may not know from our vantage point.
But as I gaze at his picture, my spirit speaks...and I say 'Fly free my friend. Be our Advocate, our Angel with a Purpose. Join those who stand shoulder to shoulder for us here, and know, always, that you will always be admired....and so much loved.
From the windowsill of one Orange Tabby...
love and light,
