Buyer’s Guide: How to Choose the Best Wet Cat Food

Is wet or dry food better for your cat?

There isn’t a single answer to this question. It’s based on your cat’s needs and your lifestyle and budget. Most commercial dry and wet foods will provide your cat with a properly balanced diet. There are, however, some crucial differences between wet and dry food. An experienced veterinarian can be a great assistance when choosing the best food for your cat.

Need veterinary advice but can't get to the clinic? Catster recommends PangoVet, our online veterinary service. Talk to a vet online and get the answers and advice you need for your cat without having to leave your living room — all at an affordable price!

    Moisture

The biggest difference between wet and dry cat food is the moisture content. Dry food only contains about 10% water, whereas wet food is about 80%. For this reason, dry food is more energy-dense and higher in calories than wet food. Dry food is also higher in carbohydrates.

    Protein content

The protein content in wet food is generally higher than in dry food, which can be a positive for some cats. When fed in appropriate portions, the high protein and fat content found in wet food helps to keep cats lean and prevents weight gain.

    Spoilage

Dry food can be left out for days without a problem. On the other hand, wet food has to be fed at mealtimes, and the leftovers have to be refrigerated. For this reason, dry food is more convenient for owners who may not be home at mealtimes.

    Cost

Wet cat food is almost always more expensive than dry cat food. For pet parents on a tight budget, this can be a deciding factor. However, some very budget-friendly wet cat foods are available, many of which are listed above.

Benefits of feeding wet cat food

There are several benefits to feeding wet cat food, in addition to the high protein content.
    • The extra moisture content is beneficial for cats who suffer from bladder or kidney issues. This is a common problem in older adult cats.
    • Wet food is beneficial to weaning kittens and can help kittens transition from a liquid to a solid diet. Since kittens don’t get permanent teeth until they’re about 1 year old, wet food is much easier to chew than dry kibble.
    • For senior cats with missing teeth or dental sensitivities, wet food is easier to eat.
    • Wet food is more flavorful than dry food, so it can help sick or picky cats eat.

Storage tips for wet cat food

Unlike dry cat food, wet food can’t be left out all day for your cat to nibble on. When left out for too long, wet food can grow bacteria, which will lead to an upset stomach. It’s also not very appealing for your cat once it’s dried up.

Any food remaining in the can after you feed your cat should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator to be served later. The leftovers should be fed within one to two days of opening. If you feed a kitten or small cat, you can avoid leftovers by buying smaller cans. Pet parents with multiple cats may benefit from larger cans that provide larger serving sizes.

Some wet foods can be frozen for long-term storage, while others can’t. Be sure to check the label for directions on freezing beforehand. If you find your leftover wet cat food has dried out slightly, you can add a small amount of water to soften it before feeding to restore the moisture content.
