When you simply can’t settle on a name for your new cat, focusing on a single letter is a great starting point. We have to say; the letter N is one of our favorites because it’s the first letter of so many beautiful, cute, and funny names for cats.

How to Name Your Cat

There’s no rulebook for naming cats, which is great, but it can make settling on the right name even more tricky. If you’re struggling to find inspiration, here are some tips for naming your cat:

Sound

Pick a name you like saying out loud. You’ll be using the name for a long time to come, so if it feels awkward when you speak it aloud, consider picking something else. An extra tip—names composed of just one or two syllables are a good rule of thumb. These names feel like less of a mouthful when you say them out loud.

Personality

Tuning into your cat’s mannerisms and quirks can make it easier to choose a name. For example, if you’ve decided that you want a name starting with N and you’ve got a cat that’s quite zany, you could call them something like “Nutty.” Another example: if your cat is especially greedy, a funny, food-inspired name like “Nugget” might be fitting.

Appearance

Physical characteristics are also good markers for names. An example: if you have a stunning black cat, you might call them “Nyx” after the goddess of the night in Greek mythology. A brown or chocolate-colored cat might be named “Nutmeg,” like the spice.
