How to Name Your Cat

Here are a few tips that might help you come up with a name for your cat.

Take your cat’s appearance, for example. The pattern or color of their coat can give you a few ideas (a black cat can be Midnight and a white cat Moon). Their size can also be taken into consideration. Are they slender or on the bulky side?

Check your favorite authors, actors, bands, and musicians or favorite characters from TV shows, movies, and books. Think about your cat’s unique quirks and how those might be turned into a name. This can lead to categories like video games, food, and drinks.

Finding a name for your cat can be a challenge if you don’t know where to start, but at the end of the day, you might find that there are far too many options!

Use Your Imagination!

Of course, these lists are not completely exhaustive. These are just ideas, some of which you might like and others not so much. Once you have a few names on your shortlist, try saying them out loud a few times to see how they roll off the tongue. Sometimes a name might seem like a good idea in your head but sounds awkward when spoken aloud.

You can also consider adding an honorific or title to your cat’s name for fun. Many cats already know how important they are, so this could be a fun way to acknowledge this.

Some titles start with M, like in Miss Marple, but you can also add a regal title that doesn’t start with M to their name, like in Queen Merry.

  • Professor
  • Her or His Majesty
  • Queen/King
  • Madame
  • Sir
  • Mrs. or Miss
  • Senator
  • Dame
  • Prince/Princess
  • General
  • Sergeant
  • Colonel

Conclusion

Now you’ll need to make a decision. You can use a name that describes your cat, like an orange cat can be Marmalade, or you can give them the name of your favorite food, like Macaroni or Melon.

We hope that you’ll find a perfect name for your cat here or at the very least, inspiration. If you want to keep looking, the thesaurus can be your best friend, but remember to test the name out loud. You will likely have your cat for 10 to 20 years, which can be a long time to saddle your cat with a silly or hard-to-pronounce name. In the end, we hope that you find a name that’s just as unique as your cat.
