Likes: Suckle on anything or anyone, purring & kneading at the same time.
Arrival Story: When I arrived at work on Friday, Sept 26th, Sweetie was hanging outside, greeting everyone and even running across the street to greet them. A co-worker & I decided that we couldn't leave her out there, so I called our vet to see if they would be able to take her. There are often kittens up for adoption there.
I decided to take her right then, even though there was a drop-off fee. I couldn't have lived with myself if something had happened to her. All the way there she sat on my lap & suckled on my shirt or my neck, kneading the entire time.
I dropped her off and they told me they would let me know how she was & when she got adopted. For as sweet as she was, nobody thought it would be very long.
I was pulling back into the parking lot at work when I got the call. The blood test came back positive for feline leukemia. I was devastated. This sweet little girl that I had just met an hour ago had already found her way into my heart.
Well, all day, we checked the web, called shelters, rescues, got phone numbers from the vet. We wanted to find a home for her to stay and possibly live a good life. We couldn't find anything...and agonized over the choice we had to make. Our wonderful vet told us that if she was positive for FIP, she would tell us to take her home & as long as she didn't fight with the other kitties, they'd all be fine. But with feline leukemia, whatever kind of life she would have would be tough on her & her owner. She also thought that since Sweetie was so young that she was probably born with it. So...we made that tough decision. We spent a lot of time with her, taking pictures, letting her suckle (her favorite thing). When it was time, the doctor came in with us (not just a tech). I held her and she was suckling right up to the end. Not everyone can do it, but to be with a kitty or pet at the end, it's just so peaceful. I wanted her to know that she was loved...and I sure hope she knew that. We will bring her home for her final resting place, along side Sparky.
In honor of strays everywhere, momma & daddy took this picture (with me) because it reminded them of me. If only every stray were as lucky as me & this kitty to have found love. In case you can't read it, it says: "Abandoned by others, she strayed into our hearts." That's just what I did to momma & daddy.
