Arrival Story:
Firefly came to officially live with my partner and I yesterday! We sourced her from The Hull Animal Welfare Trust in South Cave after seeing her brindle tortie sister from a distance on their website! I'd been specifically looking for a brindle Tortie and after 6 weeks of searching, it seemed I would have to wait for ever! But Pixie (brindle) was waiting for me secretly with her Sister Firefly and after playing with them in their pen, I knew I had to try and give them a home! My mum just thought I should go for Firefly at first because she was the biggest and therefore mum thought healthiest and she was very pretty with her marbled ginger flames across her face/body! But I wanted 2 kitty's and to keep the sisters together and loved Pixie anyway! It was a very stressful week for me that followed, as I couldn't reserve them until i'd had a successful home check and i was just so worried someone else would take them! But now they're here with us its so great! We refer to them as the kitts (kids) and so far Firefly has been quite reserved and has taken the followed her sister's dominance and confidence, which is strange as she is bigger! Firefly was sick on the journey home and so I think that has made her a little weary of us but I know she'll come round as Pixie has come on in leaps and bounds just today (now sitting on my lap and falling to sleep after I lured her with a toy!)! Firefly's still following Pixie and imatating her but her play is getting more confident now and she like to eat from her bowl whereas Pixie will eat from my hand!

Bio:
Firefly was very close to her mum and imitated her a lot (like she now is her sister) when I saw them together in the pen at the shelter. She is quite a bit bigger than her sis and is starting to get the edge in their fights with sheer body mass (though pixie is still nimble and quick!).

Update after visit to vets today...

May 20th 2008 3:05 pm   [link to this entry]

So I got put in that car thing AGAIN! and took somewhere fairly strange called 'the vets?'... and I was handling it quite well until this big hairy barking, whining thing came in with some human! I wasn't very happy about that and started shaking a little but couldn't help but be curious at the same time! When I went in to see the vet human he immediately dragged me out of my cage and shoved a stick thing up my bottom, which I didn't like one bit! Well would you? He said it was to take my temperature, what with all my sneezes of late! He said I didn't have a temperature but that having been in a animal welfare centre, I may be a little run down and could have caught a cold. He gave my human mum some antibiotics to give me for 5 days by dropper! (Not looking forward to that!) She says she is gonna count my sneezes and see if I get worse before she starts giving me them cos the vet said she could give me a little while to see if it clears up. She didn't want to take any risks with me though so got the antibiotics anyway to save a possible 2nd visit and also cos she loves me! Puurrrr! Anyway, when we got home I was very happy to see we had not been taken away from our new home cos we weren't wanted and so me and the sis got straight on with our usual antics of serious wrestling and climbing at high speed up and down the sofa! (good job its a hard wearing cloth type one, my human mum says!). Human mum counted my sneezes tonight and when they where and couldn't believe how she was able to do that for me yet had never been able to keep a food diary for healthy eating for herself! So my total sneezes for between 8.10pm and 10.35pm London time have been 23! Is that alot? I did 11 in 12 minutes when I escaped out the front room and ran upstairs with my sis to investigate the rest of my house! Maybe I get too excitable! Hmmmmm... Sleep now! zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

How i'm doing in my new home...

May 20th 2008 2:52 am   [link to this entry]

Hello cat lovers! My name is Firefly and I got adopted on Saturday 17th May from the Hull Animal Welfare Trust my 2 humans, who so far I'm still a bit wary of. I'm sure they are fine an all but my journey was a bit chaotic and I didn't like that travelling thing they did to me and was sick in my carrier! Eww! My sister Pixie who's come to live with me however is having a whale of a time! She was straight out of the carrier when we arrived in this peach looking place that I've heard them calling a 'bathroom'.I didn't come out for a while though cos my tummy was all jubbly and I didn't feel my best!

For the last few days I've really been letting Pixie take the lead on general cat matters. She seems to know what she doing so I just follow and copy her! I must say though i've had this funny little sneeze since I got put in the carrier and I do it every so often and now Pixie's started a bit though not as often as me! My human has booked me in at the vets today to have a check up. The animal welfare trust thinks it may just me the new smells of the house and a little allergy? I am eating well and using my litter tray properly and I've been enjoying my felix kitten pouches and Pixies, as she doesn't like the wet stuff, she eats kitten bic's out of the humans hand instead, which i'm a bit jealous of so I always go to check its not something better than bic's just in case i'm missing out, then when i find is just bics, i get bored and go and find something else to do! Bic's don't work for me as much as pixie!

Ooooh... just remembered, on the food front today the human tried to feed Pixie some new wet food, just a tiny spoon of Whiskers kitten pouch to see if she would like that brand better and she seemed interested at first but then I ate it all for her and very tasty it was! My human thinks i'll be o.k because I ate lots of felix food first and it was only a taster!

Anyway I'd better go cos i've got better things to be doing right now. Where's my curtain hoop toy on that stretchy stuff?

The nite before my arrival...

May 16th 2008 4:26 pm   [link to this entry]

Here are some thoughts from our new mum/owner on the eve before our arrival!...

Just some Kitty Eve thoughts before going to bed... Tonight is the eve of the arrival of the kitts! It is so weird as i'm trying not to think about them... even though i've cleaned the house from top to bottom and have their various play perches ready inc. cardboard boxes, tents, toys, litter tray, carrier, food bowls and food lined up in a row like a bunch of xmas presents! I tell you all, I'm not one for spoiling people but I really want these kitts to feel loved and safe when they get here and I want to meet all their needs! They will be a major addition to our household of 2 making 4 and after a year of being in our first home and on my own when OH is at work and I do shifts, knowing i'll never feel that lonely sense of errie quiet in the house anymore is so strange and exciting! Its almost like I imagine having kids would be! Please understand that I don't want to give the impression that I think cats are kids, as I don't but I'm definitely not ready for children yet (even at 27) so I refer to them as my kitts (kids) in an endearing way! I just love feline behaviour and watching cats do their thing and interacting with them and feel it is such a privilege! It feels like Christmas Eve when I was 5 or 6, before it lost its mystery! I know I'll get used to the kitts eventually and find other things to look forward to, but this experience is definitely one i'll remember always! Kitts Rule!
