Since you wrote about wondering what we did before air conditioning in your diary I asked meowmie to post an answer here for anycat to read:
We had fans -- a big celing fan in the hallway of the house meowmie grew up in sucked up the hot and humid air and helped to bring in the cooler air from outside. Especially at night people hung out together outside. The adults would gather in someone's driveway on lawn chairs and folding chairs. The human kits would run up and down the street and into the backyards chasing each other (like us kitties do), and then they would play their ball games in the middle of the street between the parked cars. When someone saw a car coming down the street they would yell "car" and all the human kits would step aside to let it pass.
On the weekends the humans would go to the beach and spend the entire day, from the morning until sunset. A beach is a place cats would not like -- sand you cannot do your business in and salty water that moves around a lot to swim in. They would bring a lot of food and blankets to nap on. They put smelly stuff on their skin to keep from getting sunburnt. I think fur is superior.
Meowmie is not sure a/c is totally progress because it keeps people inside and not knowing their neighbors so much. Although a/c is good for people who cannot breath hot and heavy air, meowmie does miss this part of "the good old days" . . .

Yeah, my meowmy can remember some of those lifestyle things.
And my unfurbros are just about totally indoor dudes, they hate hot weather, bugs and armchair sports are more their style...
Meowmy used to play street hockey, and before fireworks were illegal her and her big sister would go and have fun with those tiny red ones with a bunch of other young kids...today that might be termed a gang, but it was just innocent fun. Then we would all go and beg koolade from someone's mom...most of them were not at work in those days...OMC! How our lives HAVE changed!
Or we would all go and run through a sprinkler, or jump in a wading pool. Evenings would be in front of a fan.
The first time meowmy remembers AC in someones home...she thought it was odd that they had all their windows closed and she could feel the cool air coming through the vents. She thought that they were using the furnace fan! HAH! MOL!I think she was about 16 or 17. They didn't have AC in their home. In fact, meowmy never had any living space with AC until her oldest kidlet was about 18 months old...That was such a blessing in their lives, when they finally got it!
OK! Now you know our story!!

LOVE YOUR DIARY TODAY. MY MAMA SAID TO TELL YOUR MAMA SHE REMEMBERS THE "GOOD OLD DAYS" WHEN THE GROWNUPS SAT ON THEIR PORCHES AND TALKED AND THE KIDS PLAYED TAG, ETC IN THE YARD UNTIL DARK. A/C WAS UNHEARD OF THEN, BUT SHE SAID THEY SURVIVED AND THOSE WERE GOOD DAYS.
HAVE A GOOD DAY SWEETIE.
BOOTSIE AND THE WILLIAMS GANG OF FURS
Sassy's Mama speaking, My Mama and Daddy did not have air conditioning until I was about 17 years old. We were always outside and we all knew each other and each others kids. We would sit around on the porch in the evenings and everyone seemed to gather together on our big porch and we used fans to try to keep cool. All of us kids knew everyones Mom and we would take turns going to each Mom's house for Koolaid or iced tea and we usually got snacks too and then back outside. We had club houses we built outselves from sticks and blankets and stuff, played softball, went treasure hunting in the woods, had picnics, went swimming in ponds (if our Mom's knew that they would probably have killed us, ha ha) Today you can't get kids away from the TV or video games. You are correct, those were good ole' days where everyone knew everyone and helped out each other and everyone watched out for everybody's else's kids. You also listened to everybody's else's Mama just like you would your own or you knew you would get it when you got home!
Hugz and purrs, Sassy
Meowmy also remembers that the coolest place in the house was the cellar. my grand meowmy would set up cots there so they could all sleep there in the relative coolness. That is where my meowmy got to be scared of spiders...OMC!
She also remembers running through fields near the creeks, to wade and pick berries. Also going all over the place on her bicycle. Who in their right mind would let their kids out of their sight, now?!
When she got home in the evenings, she ate her supper and fell in the bed, too pooped to worry about the heat!
Thanks furriends for sharing your memories--they sparked a bunch more for my meowmie, like the family watching tv in the basement and getting snacks at friends houses, and getting scolded by anykit's parents, and illegal fireworks too. Sigh . . .
