The Monkey Monologues

A sad day for us all

It is with heavy heart that I come to let you know that my special doodle bug, who loved me more than any cat ever, has left this earth.

He had been struggling for 5 years with Kidney failure, requiring extensive home care. Things seemed to be pretty stable for most of that time. However, our boy continued to lose weight. He was down to just over 6 lbs from a peak healthy weight of over 14.

This last year he developed pancreatitis. We could only manage this with pain meds. Most of the time he seemed comfortable, content. He had bad days, sure, but most of the time he would still cuddle and purr.

Yesterday evening, my husband and I were making dinner. He was asleep in the home office room. When I returned, Monkey was retching in a very violent manner, not producing much. He went into "hide" mode. He didn't seem to want me to touch him. Within an hour, the foam he was vomiting up started to tinge pink with blood. I knew then there would be no waiting to morning.

We took him to the Waukesha ER vet...great place...I've had three there now. They wanted to run some diagnostics...we went home. They didn't get too far before they called us back. Monkey had developed the bloat/twisted stomach like in Marley and Me. Vet said she couldn't be absolutely sure w/out surgery...and that she had never seen it in a cat, but that it was possible. Xrays identical to a dog in there in the same thing. I knew that invasive treatment wasn't happening for my poor boy who has been so sick for so long. I asked to see him.

Once she brought him in, my decision was clear. His spark, gone. His tiredness so complete he would not rouse, not even for kisses. He just looked around, laying on his side. I'm not sure he knew it was us, but I really hope so. I sent my boy to be with Wuss and Bratty. I'm gonna miss him so much.

So, Mom's been working really hard on getting weight back on me. I was down another couple pounds!! OUCH!!! I'm pretty stable otherwise, and due for bloodwork soon.

Apparently KOSMO needs vet care before I do. I should be miffed, but if it saves me from going, then so be it!
